Public Enemies Movie Trailer

public enemies trailer

Universal Pictures has released the movie trailer for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Johnny Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. Depp vs. Bale? Sounds like my kind of Summer gangster movie. Watch the trailer after the jump, and tell me what you think in the comments below.

Official Plot Synopsis: In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.’’ However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Public Enemies hits theaters on July 1st 2009.

    Thanks a lot,

what's with all the high english accents? thats nuts

I saw the trailer at the theater. Looks like the same cheap video process used for "Collateral" and "Miami Vice." "Crank 2" and other recent movies have shot in HD that wasn't obvious. It's so odd to see A-list actors cheapened by a fuzzy format, every quick movement smearing across the screen. But even odder in a period piece; it took me right out of the trailer, like looking at Depp through a gauze veil. I'll avoid it in the theater but maybe, maybe rent it on Blu-ray because the content is intriguing.

Look at the apple trailer, the real one, before the universal logo comes on depp hops over a counter, if you look its off, its a CGI depp face, i GUESS he couldnt jump that well. Check it out.

I'm related to him.... that sucks man

I don't like the digital camera feel. It seems more fake in this case, like modern people dressing up as gansters. Should have been shot in film. The attempt to try and make the film feel as if it could happen today just doesn't work with a period film IMO.
  • movie is gonna be so sick. I know people who went to a screening in LA and said it was really really good. Oh and why am I watching Jimmy Fallon play beer pong agaisnt Serena Williams on tv?...Wierd
  • freemachine
All those Thompson submachine guns blazing!!! You can never have too many Tommy-guns in a gangster movie. This movie is gonna rock!
  • instant classic, can't wait!

Dude i been waitting for Johnny Depp to wake up and stop doing kiddy movies, he is always awsome on movies like this, just remember Donnie Brasco and Blow. His acting always draws you into the movie and you actually end up caring for his characters ... AWSOME
  • Looks a great film. Michael Mann hasn't put a foot wrong yet (an yes I did like 'Miami Vice'), Johnny Depp has established himself as one of the better actors of our generations and the whole Dillenger story is something that deserves to be turned into a 'Hollywood epic' with big budget and stars to boot. Lookin' good so far.
  • Looks awesome, Bale kills Pretty Boy Floyd that just makes this even better.
  • I have been looking forward to this movie as much as the next guy, but when I watched the trailer I couldn't help but think that the score is lacking. I feel that it might not do the movie justice if the entire movie is scored in this same style of music. Does anyone agree or disagree? Maybe an older style music, it feels too modern.
  • Dude, calm down. Its just temp music. Also...THIS MOVIE IS GONNA BE FUCKING AWESOME!
  • Am I the only one who thinks this trailer is not very good? Too long and too much talking, are they trying to show the whole movie in a few minutes?
Regardless my interest in the film, this trailer is a mess.

    This looks solid!
  • This basically looks like this year's American Gangster, except better. Johnny Depp is brilliant in this role.
Also, Billy Crudup's J. Edgar Hoover's accent in this sounds really good.
  • Fonz
Exactly what I was thinking. American Gangster looked like it was gonna be all action but it wasn't. I love Michael Mann's work and this looks like an old-school version of Heat. I'm gonna have to watch the HD trailer to get the full affect of his camera work.
  • Exactly what I was thinking, this year's American Gangster. Depp/Bale versus Denzel/Crowe
  • Weyland_Yutani
I think Marion Cotillard is inspired casting, although from this trailer, it's hard to figure out if her role has any heavy lifting. I hope she is more than window dressing.
  • I think she playing the lady in Red, The one who ousted Dillinger to the cops.
  • Pumpedforthismovie
Untouchables + Bonnie and Clyde + Heat + Collateral?
  • Peter
It's looking like Bale is going to be 2 for 2 this year! WOOOO
  • This looks weak.

I like it better when it was called "American Gangster".
  • Jack
there have been a million "master criminal vs. the law" movies. American Gangster didn't make that up.
  • I can't get over how funny the name Melvin Purvis sounds. I mean, from Bruce Wayne and John Connors to MELVIN PURVIS?! Hahahahahaaa
  • I love Cruddup's old timey voice, it sounds like he should be narrating an old news reel or something.
  • /filmboogers
yeah, it IS good. but is cotillard supposed to be american here? strange accent on her first line
  • I most definitely agree with you. I'm still very much interested in the film, but the trailer didn't pop much at all.
  • Dan
    Many thanks, RRM!
  • AM I excited to see this film? Yes. Was that trailer any good? No. It was stock-standard in so many ways. Typically trying to ask all the questions and hint at all the answers throughout. Could have just given the histories, the actors who will be playing the characters, and a booming release date. As it stands, this trailer was just above 'meh'.
  • dude are you sure, because it feels like michael mann would this movie this way.
  • Ryan
Ya come in its the trailer dont judge a movies score by the trailer......the trailer is a glimpse of what is to come, dont be so ridiculous to think thats going to be the tone for the whole movie
  • CHAIN OF NEGATIVITY.
  • This would have looked so much classier and glorious on 35mm. DAM! The good side is it's making audiences more acceptable to films shot digitally, which is great for low budget film makers who have no choice.
  • i, like others, am not too impressed by the trailer. but how can you not be excited for this film? it wasn't terrible, and didn't make me any less excited.
  • C'on
I don't care if every critic in the world calls this garbage. I am there opening night.
  • looks weird filmed in digital, but amazing none the less

i just got VERY pumped for this one

michael mann is back on top
leaving miami vice in a pile of rubble (which it wholeheartedly deserves)
  • double agreeeeed

    'cept the original is FANTASTIC!!!
  • juan
    where is lost's Claire ?
  • Noice. Looking at the trailer it seems like Johnny might dominate this movie. Hopefully Bale keeps pace with Depp 'cause this has the makings for a really great time spent by all :)
  • I think the movie looks really good. The only problem I have with it is the same gritty moving camera shots that Michael Mann always seems to use. I like the shots in other movies, it's just that I don't think it works well in this type of film. Maybe it will all come together a little differently when I actually see the movie.
  • Dan and Mike, the song at the end of the trailer is Ten Million Slaves by Otis Taylor.
  • ejs
looks good. cant say I have any respect for Mann's musical choices though. if audioslave finds its way into this movie i will be very upset.
  • mike
let go of the digital camera talk. dose any one not now the name of the song??????
  • Oh another interesting movie to consider seeing this summer, this looks entertaining.
  • It's an interesting choice using the digital video again. He used in Collateral to his advantage; he wanted to show modern LA and give it the feel like it was all one bad night in the city.
But in this picture? On one hand I think it's a fantastic idea. Show it nitty and gritty, give it some reality. Go completely opposite of what Road to Perdition did visually. On the other hand it just wastes all the time and work that goes into making a period piece come to life with costumes and sets if the whole flick comes off looking like Cloverfield. I think it might end up working better on paper and test footage than in multiplexes .

I trust Mann and even if it does fail, I give him some props for taking the gamble.
