Public Enemies Movie Trailer

public enemies trailer

Universal Pictures has released the movie trailer for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Johnny Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. Depp vs. Bale? Sounds like my kind of Summer gangster movie. Watch the trailer after the jump, and tell me what you think in the comments below.

Official Plot Synopsis: In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.’’ However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Public Enemies hits theaters on July 1st 2009.

    LOOKS AWESOME
    DEPP FOR OSCAR!!!!!
  • Matador
It looks amazing! Michael Mann back to form. This movie is going to be so amazing, that I think forgetting about Miami Vice will be a breeze.
  • flattopfilms
    this movies gonna kill
  • Yes! Looks like Collateral meets Untouchables. Badass.
  • Peter
That's so true and that can only equal EPIC SUCCESS
  • Mike
"we're here for the banks money, not yours"

    a call back to Heat?
  • Possibly. But probably not. Dillenger was always known as a gentleman and would never harm someone in a heist unless provoked. I have a relative that was shot by Dillenger. If it were me, I'd dig the bullet out and have myself an awesome keepsake.
  • thats dope
  • What song is that?
  • Dr. Lizardo
Awesome trailer, even more awesome picture. Although the digital camera style seems oddly out of place in a period piece (worked wonders in Collateral though).
  • amazing.
  • filmkid
Johnny Depp vs Christian Bale its going to be great. i hope no one will not mention Johnny Depp should be in the next Batman movie form watching this trailer.
  • I think this is gonna be the SCARFACE for the late 2000s.
  • Justin
Don't ever say that. Don't you ever.
  • blur
    scarface is overrated.
  • ck.
    agreed
  • you have to judge Scarface for its time. I think it's a great film. it is not, however, timeless. in an age today where violence drugs sex and profanity are a norm of action films, it's hard to grasp Scarface's impact.

i know there are people who would argue that it IS timeless, but that's just my take. it is a great film. overrated? i think it just depends on your group of friends' tastes. I know just as many people who don't like Scarface, as people who do.
  • Agreed
  • Michael Mann. Christian Bale. Johnny Depp.

    I'm sold.
  • mike
can not wait. some one please tell me what song that was?
  • Heather
Ten Million Slaves by Otis Taylor
  • Nate
Thank you Heather. been looking for that song all day
  • Looks good.
  • [A]
wow, that was.. bland. silly crappy music, and the ever-poor looking video.. why oh why do they shoot in video?
  • thankyoufor
they shot in Digital Panasonic HD i think and yes its a very bland trailer i hated it
  • glad someone said it. I was looking forward to this but it doesnt even have a movie look to me. Im still looking forward to it, but im just kind of..put off by this trailer.
  • It almost looks like someone went back in time with a modern Digital HD cam, and filmed the footage of the era. I don't know the frame rate just doesnt seem right, little too quick for a film I imagined to be gritty, looks more like JJ Abrams Star Trek, then a gangster film (in regards to the glossy film, not subject matter).

I'm also puzzled as to why they didnt play up Bale, the trailer seemed to focus on Depp only, when Bale has just as much star power.
  • casey
Man i completely disagree... i love that they shot it in video. I think it looks awesome. Im tired of the shitty looking film that movies from this era are generally shot in. its nice to mix it up like this
  • NaMaHa
Couldn't agree more casey. I'm excited that video is getting pushed forward. People are going to have to learn to quit comparing video to film, it's its own animal, and I'm excited to see what it can do!
  • I have no idea if this'n'll be any good. But it's certainly worth seeing to find out!
  • johnny depp in the next batman after this performance!
where is the transformers news? just kiddin, movie looks phat depp vs bale nice
  • JonathanZ
It is unforuntae that you can tell the digital aspect of the movie in the trailer. But, projection wil fix that.

    Great trailer.
  • MANN_FAN_LOL
    DAMN that looks great.
  • Looks like a lot of fun. I just hope that Mann focuses more on the character development and not just the action but looks like a good mix so far. Reminds me a little of Collateral.
  • Ben
Its way to early to say anything about the Oscars or even if the movie will live up to this awesome trailer but I was blown away by the realism in all of the costumes and sets. Wow I sounded a little gay there. Just Kidding.
  • HELL YES! now that looks like a crime movie!
  • Matt
Sucks this is gonna be "Heat" DeNiro/Pacino all over again.
  • Brent
Heat is an amazing movie. Anything close to it would be great!
  • andrew aiello
as it's been said, depp really wante dthios role and in preporation he got to actually go through dillinger's suitcase(the one that got left behind) inside was a suit, depp got to wear it and turns out it fit perfectly. can't wait for this picture.
  • jason B
    jesus. fucking. christ.
  • Baconface
cant wait to see this flick! it looks so great. Bale is the man and always delivers. cant wait!
  • Can't wait for this.
  • Dan
Anyone know what that song playing during the end of the trailer was?
  • Susan
"Ten Million Slaves" by Otis Taylor
  • Digital filming/hand held cameras make it look like a student film, but I think this will be good.
  • It looks great. What's with the handheld look though? I'm sure Mann used it for a reason. Can't wait.
  • Ummm... Fuck Yeah!
  • Daniel C.
is that even 24 fps? the way it was shot makes it look like an amateur student film.
  • theuglyspirit
Yeah, that looks like 60fps... If it was Panasonic they could have easily shot at 24.. I'm not sure why they didn't. It's rather off putting.
  • Patrick
    Looks good.
