500 Days of Summer Movie Trailer

500 days of summer trailer top

Fox Searchlight has finally released a full length movie trailer for Marc Webb’s indie post-modern romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer. The Sundance Film Festival sensation tells the story of a love story, in a way you’ve never seen it before. When a greeting card copywriter named Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is dumped by the love of his life, a magical girl named Summer (Zooey Deschanel), he takes a look back at their 500 days “together” to try to figure out where things went wrong. I gushed all over this movie at Sundance (read my review here).

The trailer begins much like the movie begins, with fairy tale like narration. You’ll get brief glimpse at some of the more non-traditional visual storytelling techniques that Webb employs (dream sequences, split screens, and even a dance number) and also gives you a brief listen to the film’s incredibly hip soundtrack (track listing here). The trailer comes off as a little cliche (which is strange since the film is the opposite of generic) and I still don’t think it plays up the aspect of the film that makes it so unique - the fact that the movie jumps between the past and the future to help explain how the couple fell in love and what, if anything, went wrong. Watch the trailer after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Official plot synopsis: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t. This post modern love story is never what we expect it to be — it’s thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn’t quite go where we think it will. When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days “together” to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life. 500 DAYS OF SUMMER stars Zooey Deschanel (THE HAPPENING, FAILURE TO LAUNCH) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (STOP-LOSS, THE LOOKOUT,) directed by Marc Webb, screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber.

Watch the trailer in high definition on Yahoo. (500) Days of Summer will hit limited theaters on July 17th 2009.

  • Looks great. Reminds me of Gondry.
  • wow. that looks so good. a little cliche but still looks great. can't wait to see this.
  • It's a decent cookie-cut trailer but it doesn't compare to the teaser you posted a while back.
  • scotttremper
This film was my favorite of all the ones I saw at Sundance, but this trailer seems pretty weak. Still, I can't wait for it's release so I can see it again.
  • rnl
    holy.
  • Aequitas
A top 5 for me at Sundance. Its a great movie and Levitt is amazing.
  • Grrr! I want this movie now.
  • It looks very boring.
  • Mmm, it doesn't have the... 'feel,' of the first trailer. I enjoyed the whole fiasco approach the teaser had, which reflected the narrative style of the movie, and Sweet Disposition was a killer song choice.

Weak, Fox Searchlight, weak. What happened to the Slumdog-Millionaire-trailer style? I want my Hoppipolla back...
  • I liked the teaser better, but this still looks amazing. I can't wait to see this.
  • Zinc
I liked the teaser better, music really fit it.
  • /filmluvsmozz
i'm seeing morrissey next month. thought i'd throw that out there. seemed applicable. man i totally know what levitt is going through in that first scene.
  • JoshMayhood
Wow...a trailer that has Hall and Oates "You Make My Dreams Come True". That's pretty fucking original, even if it's the 100th trailer to do so.

That song should just be in every trailer from now on...it would be funny after awhile.
  • Am I the only one who thinks Zooey Deschanel is the hottest girl in Hollywood??? She is freaking stunning... I love her!!!
  • Yeah, you're right. She's amazing. This is probably going to be one of her best flicks too...I can't wait to see this!
  • gombi
No you aren't, there are 2 of us.
  • Taco
Question: Can Zoeey Deschanel play more than one kind of role?

Regardless, I think this'll be pretty good. Levitt kicks ass and it's been a while since we've seen a quality romantic/relationship film.
  • edward
a pg-13 movie about love, that has similar scene composition to eternal sunshine, being john malkovich, and a soundtrack that furthers that fuckterm of a word, "indie".

ofcourse you popcorn lovin sunsabitches are gonna like this.
  • Argh, I wish I hadn't watched that, after seeing the teaser I was pretty excited for this movie but this was a little weak.
  • Perry
Wow. I haven't seen any footage of this movie before this. But this trailer sold me. Especially because it isn't a romantic comedy. And they used one of the most overlooked Wolfmother songs ever. Vagabond is great.
  • Agreed.
  • Looks great--can't wait to see it. Also, note to self: I shouldn't be afraid to share my love of The Smiths. It could turn into a pick up line.
  • Django
Actually it's much more endearing for both sexes if you're both a little afraid to share your love of the Smiths.

B/c once you start broadcasting your love of the Smiths, you just become outsandingly stylish.

Well, that's not necessarily a bad thing... maybe it's that the rest of humanity becomes cumbersome to you, or something. ;)
  • it looks great. i think they got the casting spot on for this flick.
  • maverick
why isn't mr. bob marley on the soundtrack?
  • Fia
If I could catch a boy just by sharing my love of the Smiths/Morrissey I would be playing my music much louder far more often.

This looks fresh and sweet. Can't wait!
  • I love Zooey, so I'm in. There are some things I don't like off the bat. There's a dream dance scene for one. And, who wears those kinds of head phones except the retarded guy who walks to the 7-11 and back each day, or the snory guy on the airplane?
  • *drools* this is a MUST-SEE film for me.
  • I'm in the same basket!
  • Weyland_Yutani
I get a High Fidelity / Nick Hornby vibe more than anything. Levitt seems like he is channeling John Cusack.

This is all a very good thing.
  • Wow, OK, I'm keen on this some more. The first minute of the trailer with the long form opening and Nielsen was great, got a little formulaic afterwards but hey, it is a trailer. Searchlight is certainly pushing this.
  • Evan
I already compared this film to Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" when Peter first described this film at Sundance. But now he mentions unusual storytelling techniques like split-screen and I have to scream it: THIS MOVIE SOUNDS LIKE ANNIE HALL! Maybe people feel the same but don't mention it, but I feel like this should not go unsaid, especially when Peter seems to treat the movie as especially unique (even post-modern).
  • You might be on to something there Max.
  • Everything about this trailer has me wanting to see this film if only to see something original again.
  • Dino
I had to go back and watch the teaser again to get that feeling of something original, something that gave me goosebumps because it looked that good. I can't wait for this movie, but this trailer does it no justice. I hate any trailer that has "you make my dreams come true" in it, might has well thrown in Solsbrry Hill by Peter Gabriel and called it a day.

But, I can't wait for this movie regardless.
  • Yes, YES and...YES! I can't wait for Summer.
  • and YES once more.
  • cantona_x
OH MAN? I love THE SMITHS either, I love THERE'S A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT either, this probably is the most romantic song ever!!!
  • Jud
"tells the story of a love story," "I gushed all over this movie at Sundance"...take it easy. You're up this films arse like you are Slumdog. I'm all for fandom but come on man.
  • Zooey should marry me, plain and simple.
  • this looks fantastic. can't wait to see this movie in the midst of all the action and cgi thrown our way that time of the year. it'll be nice to go see this movie. change of pace.

    also, what a great soundtrack!
  • Palmer
Meeting a girl through a mutual enjoyment of the Smiths is never a good thing. Never This trailer was pretty good, but I like the Sundance one better.
  • Andrew
    Christ.

I am powerless to resist this movie.

Now I just need to meet a girl like Zooey. I guess I should buy a vintage set of headphones and a Joy Division t-shirt. Oh, and a Smiths album.

    Sigh...
  • WoW... I can't ever remember being that charmed instantly by a trailer in the first few seconds. They had me at " I LOVE THE SMITHS."

There is a light that never goes out:

  • so hyped for this. jj abrams' star trek level hype. seriously. this trailer isn't as good as the first though
  • Does it make me gay that I instantly liked this trailer more when they started playing Hall and Oates?

    Time to go lift weights.
  • I love Gordon Levitt's work. I look forward to this.
  • How about we call this genre (with movies such as Garden State and this under the umbrella of this term) "indromanedies"? Indie. Romance. Comedy. They're unlike any other romcoms, so they deserve their own name.
  • alyona
does anyone know what song? is playing in the trailer??This trailer is very pretty,i think)
  • alyona
