cloverfield

During the Star Trek panel at WonderCon, JJ Abrams was asked to give a status update on a sequel to Cloverfield. I’m not going to pretend like some big news was dropped, as Abrams basically said what he always says. He reiterated that if they do a sequel, it won’t just be a business decision, and that they need a good idea before moving forward. Here is where things get a little bit interesting. Abrams says there is an idea.

We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we’re playing with, which means there will be something that’s connected to Cloverfield, but I hope it happens sooner rather than later because the idea is pretty sweet.”

Obviously, the Abrams quote doesn’t really give you much. A good idea exists, but how far has it been developed? Is there a treatment? Is someone working on a script? Is it even a sequel? Possibly a spin-off? Note that Abrams says the idea is “connected to Cloverfield”. As Star Trek nears release, I’m sure we’ll get some of the answers to those questions.

If I were Abrams I would film another secret teaser trailer and release it attached to Star Trek to garner excitement. But this time around could Abrams and company really get away with that sort of thing without word spreading to the online movie sites?

Lame. I think JJ is just b.s-ing us. I still think he is to full of himself. That's just my opinion.
  • stuntman-james
its amazing that the more popular and more inventive, the more of a target you become to people like.......this guy......makes me scared when I finish my movie and it goes to everyone
  • cloverfield sucks.... it made me really sick when i was watching it... damb is hollywood really trying to kill us or eat our brains like in the hulu commercial
  • kindbuddy
lol only reason why you said it sucks is because it made you sick lol... BE STRONGER THAN THE SCREEN...
  • Dude, Cloverfield really sucked. Not because of the shaky camera work (which was part of the whole concept). I realized how bad Cloverfield sucked when I realized that if it weren't for the concept of the home movie camera, no one would even be paying attention to the movie with it's bad acting, outlandish plot elements, and annoying characters.

If it weren't for the concept of the home movie camera? So you're saying that a monster movie featuring bad acting, outlandish plot elements, and annoying characters could never work and no one would pay attention? Have you seen monster movies? Or better yet, slasher flicks? There's an audience for every type of movie, but you hit the nail on the head with your statement because I don't think I've ever seen a monster movie which had good acting, or reasonable plot elements, or characters which I loved.
  • I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything. I realize every genre has its fans, and I guess I'm not really a monster movie fan, so you can take all I say with a grain of salt. To me, the whole movie relied on the gimmick rather than the storytelling. I realized about halfway through the movie that if Cloverfiled was shot like most other movies, it would not have received nearly as much buzz and I think more people would have realized how bad it was. To me, that was the crux of the whole thing. If the gimmick is holding the movie up, then it's not really a good movie.
  • Flax
Great response man. I didn't fully understand where you were coming from but I do now, and actually, I think I might agree with you.
  • I would also like to note that I'm a Cloverfield fan (Not really die-hard, just a fan), and every fan knows that Cloverfield attracts by the gimmick.

You have to play the ARG to find the true plotline of Cloverfield, which is a lot better than most American monster movies.

About the film itself, just consider it an roller coaster ride, less of a film.
  • it was definitely weak, not sure about sucks but you get the idea that it disappointed. camera sucked, movie was weak overall because they hardly showed the thing. the little ones chasing people around is weak as well.
hopefully he surprises us with star trek. i don't want star trek to be another weak spin-off. i really hope it rocks!
  • DocHop
I'll have to agree, I wasn't really crazy about Clover-f*ck-field...

I personally thought I could get the same effect watching a Godzilla movie while running on a treadmill and looking through binoculars...
  • Lost tie in maybe?
  • i read the first 2 paragraphs of this post and thought "huh, it would be awesome if they filmed a teaser for this in secret and attached it to Star Trek." and then you said it.

i would love to see this fresh idea brought to the Cloverfield-verse. or even the Abrams-verse.
  • If they do make a sequel to Cloverfield, they should definitely lose the shaky cam. It wasn't that bad watching it like that but it would be nice to not see that. Maybe they could do it from some other person's point of view, or maybe even the government and how they've been trying to kill the monster.
  • I always thought it would be interesting to follow a news crew at the same time of the attack. Then, you could still fall 'off the screen' and into the camera being held by a professional camera man and in high def, yet still keep that 'off the screen' motif going on.
  • I just think it would be better for all to have a normal shot of the movie. The way you're describing your shots would be something like the Quarantine movie. I have to say though that the way they did it wasn't bad and looked pretty good but I would prefer an actual movie.
  • Hmmm. The only thing I can think of that could be a spin-off instead of a sequel of some sort is a Tagruato/TIDO Wave movie. That would also tie in to Teddy Hanssen being missing and Alyse Hanssen suddenly stopping her blog posts. I'd like to see a government coverup or a government investigation on Case Designate Cloverfield, though, which would, either way, shed more light on the mystery of May 23rd and Clover.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Exactly. I really liked Cloverfield, but the online AR for the film far surpassed the reality of what we got. There were a dozen spuculated plots that would have been amazing to see played out. The possibilities of a government cover-up and the business practices of Tagruto were very compelling and offered Abrams a chance to do what he does best. I was surprised when the film didn't explore any of that.
  • I have totally forgotten about the ARG. When I read this post, it was like a dude waking up from amnesia. Congrats on being faithful to the whole thing.
  • The island in LOST houses the monster, which Olivia Dunham has to identify it's meaning for the Pattern and everything will happen in 2012, the same time the aliens invade! I am having a geekgasm, as you can tell!
  • I'm down for anything as long as it doesn't take on the Lost "this doesn't make any sense, here's another twist" story crap.
  • my head still hurts from the first one.
  • Are people only voting against him because of his rep score? He makes a valid point.
  • What about his point is 'valid?' That he is entitled to his opinion? Then everyone else is entitled to disagree. Hence the thumbs down.

There is no explanation which is enough reason for thumbs down in the first place.

  • :}
  • Lol, how did you even get -83 rep?
  • I wanna know too, I mean -83 is impressive...
  • Only one thing, I guess- Troll.
  • Not a troll. I'm just trying to get the worst rep. Going for the gold :]
  • I would like to see a tie-in story or from a different p.o.v.
  • Cloverfield was a great movie and i hopes a sequel will be released soon.
  • mikeyclt
This makes more sense to me then Star Trek IMO....
  • balki
i am pretty sure he will go with the concept that has been discussed before - linking the sequel to the scene in Cloverfield on the bridge when the camera quickly pans around and sees another guy with a camera filming the footage of the oil tanker. He'll jump off from that point, and show how that guy eventually witnesses the end of the Cloverfield monster and where it goes from there
  • [A]
I'm all up for seeing more yuppies dying
  • What if it's a documentary about the event and how it was handled? I think it would be pretty cool. They could have first hand accounts, captured footage, maybe even reuse stuff from the first Cloverfield. Or have an interview featuring one of the "survivors" and it's a character we already know. Something like that is what I've been hoping for, it would answer a lot of questions.
  • "But this time around could Abrams and company really get away with that sort of thing without word spreading to the online movie sites?"

    He did last time.
  • they cant duplicate the campaign. but I agree they should start it off with an unannounced teaser
  • Hence the, "But this time....."

Remember it was pre OC Trek and Lost was just to start it's fourth season. Then it was from the man responsible for Alias and Lost.
  • Abrams has always used the "From the creator of Alias and Lost" credit. Also, if memory serves me correctly, Abrams only produced Cloverfield. It flew under the radar because he probably wasn't ever on set. Why can't it be done again?
  • Brian
Abrams has lost it. He had a good idea with "Lost" but that's about it. Fringe is okay, not great but okay. Cloverfield was terrible (not the motion, but the plot in general) He reveals a Godzilla rip off 20min into the film which sucks.
Don't even get me started on his butchering of Star Trek. A Captain Kirk sex scene? Really JJ? Really?
The statement that he has a cool idea is so false.
  • Cloverfield's story is meant to be horrible for a film. It's a roller coaster ride, not an Oscar-snatching drama.

Captain Kirk's personality is the same as the show, only younger and inexperienced. Just cause Kirk didn't get knocked up in the TV Show when you were younger doesn't mean we can't shed light on his character.
  • I came in to post that exact idea. The interviews with the nurses talking about the head explosions could be pretty harrowing. Only this style would need very good actors because the documentary format makes it difficult to hide the actors behind other tricks like music, cinematography and the like.
  • True, true.
  • soundoftheground
so he basically said the same thing he did last july?

  • Daniel C.
All this is, is JJ Abrams trying to get some press for his new film.
  • I dunno about that. I'm sure he was just answering a question about a Cloverfield sequel. I doubt he would have gone out of his way to bring it up when it is so under-developed.
  • This seems like one of those movie news posts that didn't need to exist. Nothing was said except "yeah its something pretty cool." Seriously, Peter?
  • Other than than verifying they are seriously considering making this movie
