Is Pixar Going to Make Monsters Inc 2?

monsters, inc

Despite what Brad Bird said on stage at WonderCon two years ago, Pixar is now in the sequel business. Cars 2, Toy Story 3, but what about a sequel to Monsters, Inc? At Comic-Con 2008, director Pete Docter responded to an audience question about the prospects of a sequel by admitting that “We’ve thought about it… We’ve got a couple ideas.” MTV later prodded the filmmaker trying to get more information, Docter nervously replied “I can neither confirm nor deny”.

Pixar has announced all their films up until 2012, so could a Monsters Inc sequel be in store for 2013? Pixar fansite The Pixar Blog started receiving strange searches this past January for variations of “‘monsters 2013 pixar”. The interesting thing about the searches is that they were coming from inside Pixar, from the Pixar.com domain. I know, circumstantial at best.

Now a site called Blue Sky Disney is reporting that Pete Docter will start working on the sequel after he finishes Up, with tentative plans for a 2013 release. Now lets keep in mind that I’ve never ever heard of this BlueSkyDisney, and they don’t seem like a trusted news source. But everything I’ve heard on and off the record thus far points in the direction that Disney wants another Monsters Inc movie, and they want it in 2013/2014. Pete Docter will be at WonderCon over the weekend, and I’m sure someone will ask him about these rumors. But with no official announcement from the mousehouse, I’m betting we’ll get another answer like the one he gave MTV at Comic Con.

  • Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and A potential Monsters Inc 2 could very well be an end to this golden age of Pixar.

All their hope lies in a man named Andrew Stanton and his John Carter of Mars adaptation.

They so should make a monsters inc 2. the ending was perfact. it was alo a asd and happy way
  • Monsters Inc 2 could be good. I love the world they established. Toy Story 2 was actually pretty good too. Don't think a 3rd Toy Story would be good. Also, Cars 2? No thanks.

But, Monsters Inc 2 could be pretty awesome with the right story.
  • yeah, it was a great world.

i think it would be good to see the little girl all grown come back to the monster world. there would be some good story elements in that.

Why aren't they doing a second Incredibles movie? That was by far the most deserving of a sequel.
  • fear
errrthey did, it called something to do with the underminer
  • Why not? But I would rather see a FRESH, NEW STORY, with new characters.
  • captjcorral
btw, BLUESKYDISNEY is referring to the blue sky cellar. this is a sort of tour of things to come inside the disney parks. I live in orange county, ca, and i go to disneyland often and they have this room set up showing glimpses of what's to come...FYI. that is all.
  • Martin
Pls come up with an excellent story for the sequel!!!!
  • it's pixar. if they decide to do this, they'll do it right. i have faith in the guys over there.
  • Why would they make a sequel to this? I know they could make money off of it but the story is finished, it couldn't be called Monsters Inc. because their not monsters anymore, they make kids laugh.
  • Personally, I love the characters in this movie. So, I think Pixar could definitely come up with something that fans would enjoy. They would probably go for something related to the monsters making people laugh....and they're still monsters...just joke-telling monsters?
  • I like the characters too, it's just that I don't think a movie about monsters trying to make people laugh would be entertaining.
  • That's a good point. Let me ask you this though, would you rather see Cars 2 or Monsters Inc 2? I personally hated Cars.
  • cars was enjoyable. i would never watch it again though.
  • I think Inc. had a very open ending, one of Pixar's most open. What I want to know is what peple think when they hear their kid laughing his head off at night. They would run in the room and the kid would be like "A monster!!" right in the middle of laughing.
Talk about awkward. Oh yeah, I have an idea for a plot on Pg 2!
  • Mike Wazowski!
  • I agree, I really enjoyed that movie and anything could happen to that family. Their secret identities could be made public and have all of Mr. Incredible's old enemies come after them. It would definitely work.
  • Agreed. More than any story they've done, I'm ravenous for this sequel. I mean, superhero stories are historically serials anyway.

I am concerned though about this shift to sequels.
But, Toy Story 2 was one of my favorite sequels, so, we know they can do it.
As long as they keep innovating while still creating fantastic characters, I'll see whatever they do. many times over.
  • that makes 2 of us. so far, pixar has done little wrong.
  • I really don't know how others would feel about it but to me, it would seem like somehow they were trying to cash in on the originals success but without anything that made it successful other than the universe it took place in.
  • sulley and Mike were such likable characters. It would be hard to make characters more likable than those two, and viewers would just constantly be comparing the new to the original.
  • Yeah totally agree with you. I liked the characters and if they weren't in the new movie, the experience would feel cheapened.
  • yeah, I agree.

the universe, and the characters which stole the hearts of millions.
  • I was talking about if they made the sequel without any of the previous characters who "Stole your heart."
  • oh, shit, sorry, I didn't realise that your comment was a reply to an original post.

    my mistake.
  • in which case, you're 100% right.
  • I wouldn't worry about it too much and thanks for agreeing with me.
  • i wont hold my breath. but... it is pixar. lets see if they keep up their streak. *knock on wood*
  • sadly im sure it'll get made i dont understand why it should or would but it probably will come out. if disney wants it it'll happen. but really it better be a freaking aliens, or toy story 2. it better build on the story not just have same characters because if thats the case make a pxar short about it im sure thats all the time a sequal to the first movie needs that story is done.
  • jason B
hands down my favorite pixar flick. i'd love to see that cast back together again.
  • david
    INCREDIBLES 2, please!
  • So it looks like their trying to gauge the demand for a Monsters Inc sequel. Pixar if you're reading this, DO IT.
  • haha yes!

everyone else seems all apprehensive towards a second serving of Monsters, but i agree with you : bring it on.
  • DBogue
Well they are still monsters, they just now make kids laugh, that doesn't change that they are monsters. I have full confidence in Pixar (sigh.... even with cars 2 as much as it is a hard decision to say that) but if there is a good idea for a story docter, lasseter and crew will know when they see it. If not they won't go down that road. Also remember that there have been a lot of rumors of a Monsters Inc. Coaster to go into Disney's Hollywood Studios (im just saying that I have seen some things) to possibly work with this sequel. I LOVE monsters inc and i can't wait for Up. Btw... blue sky disney is very iffy on accuracy. About 40/60 (40 being accurate)
  • I'm pretty sure John Carter of Mars is being made separate from Pixar.
  • I wouldn't really want to see either because to me, they have both told their stories in the first installments. Cars was about a car that needed to find whatever it was he was looking for in that small town, and Monsters inc. was about a monster business that profited off of scaring people. they both concluded and shouldn't get sequels.
  • A.J
I think the thing with these Pixar sequels is that story comes first. Except maybe in the case of Toy Story 3 because Disney started that. Cars 2 may be for redemption from Cars. We'll get an incredibles 2 one day when they get a good story
  • DBogue
I would definitely prefer a monsters inc 2 over cars 2. Honestly i love every pixar film so to call Cars my least enjoyed Pixar film is saying that I enjoy Cars a lot more than other films. So it should be known that I agree that Incredibles deserves the most attention, Bird is involved now with 1906. I am excited to see some of these new directors show up at Pixar and see what they do with The Bear and the Bow and Newt.
  • Joe
As long as it's a true sequel with a great plot over a cash-in sequel, I will support Pixar on this. Just like I'm supporting Toy Story 3- considering what almost happened, I'm sure the plot is stellar.

    "We've thought about it . we've got a couple of ideas. "

    Shitcanned!
  • optimusprime
I love to see a sequel. Monsters Inc. is one of my favorites animated films of all-time. I have been wanting this news for a long time.
  • Tee
Just so you know, I've been following Blue Sky Disney for a couple years now. It's pretty reliable when it publishes something. They've talked about project at the parks weeks or months before other sites have revealed them, so I can vouch that they're pretty reliable.
  • Dd DatsMe
Not just theme park stuff. If you don't remember, BSD was the site that released the first pic of the Princess and the Frog last year. That's how I found the site when Ain't It Cool linked to the website. The next day other sites had the pic but they had it first.
  • I wouldn't mind a sequel, but I really think it won't really add anything to the story, ya know? I loved the ending to the original Monsters Inc. (a fantastic film, by the way) It's perfectly ambiguous and is just a great cap to a great movie.
  • I don't really get this whole 'it won't really add anything to the story'. It's a new movie; it's not the same story. It's not as if they necessarily have to pick up right after where they ended the first one.
  • I didn't enjoy 'Monsters Inc' as much as other Pixar ventures, and it is quite surprising to hear there might be a sequel when I'd like to see other Pixar films (e.g. Incredibles) get a second film before this, or new Pixar projects be brought forward.
  • Expect to hear before long that Pixar are moving to 3 films every 2 years from 2012 or thereabouts onwards. Seriously.

Does that take the edge off of the sequels moaning?
  • Yeah, there shouldn't be one rule for Pixar and another for other companies.

Oh, Brendon, sidenote: Have you seen the 'The International' spots that've been showing over here in the UK on tv? I spotted one today, which, when it started up, I genuinely thought was some comical advert for some random product. This is how it went:

    Voiceover:
"What if they used your money... for MUR-DAH!"

*cue shot of dude selecting the 'Murder' option on cash machine, right below 'withdraw' and 'balance'*

    fucking hilarity!
  • So is the general plan is to have one or two of the pixar teams to produce sequals to pad the budgets for a premiere team doing original stuff? (If they touch Wall-e...)
