Rick Baker’s The Wolf Man Concept Art

Academy Award-winning special effects makeup artist Rick Baker has posted some concept art of Benicio Del Toro’s transformation in Joe Johnson’s The Wolf Man on zbrushcentral.com (found via Shock).

  • Cool, I hope this turns out good. I am still kind of worried since its Joe Johntson directing, I mean Jurassic Park III was soo bad... But the comic con trailer was pretty good and it has a great cast, so maybe it will be good.
  • I don't think 'Jurassic Park III' was soo bad...I mean it had its moments of being ok...but yeah me too, after seeing that comic con trailer, 'The Wolf Man' is one of those movies I can't wait to see...
  • I'm even more worried about Benicio del Toro, I love him so much and I hope this movie won't be a flop or ruin his career.
  • he's very established...i don't think just one film could ruin it. and even if it sucked, i doubt that HE would suck in it.
  • Agreed..
Plus, this looks like it could be a nicely developed remake.
I'm definitely interested in seeing more! =)

del toro only went through the 6 hour make up less than a handful of times it was around 3 hours on three hours off nearly every day and it was the a seperate actor that did all the scenes NOT deltoro don't be fooled into thinking it's him in that costume! HE DID NOT DO IT why should he take the credit????
  • I like how Baker pays homage to Waggner's 1941 version of the Wolf Man (played by Lon Chaney, Jr.) in these designs. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film.
  • As a long time fan of werewolves even though there are virtually no good werewolf movies all I can say to this is what I've been saying since I peeped the Wolf Man Comic Con teaser...FUCK YES!
  • The only good werewolf films that had good designs were The Howling and American Werewolf in London. Everything else after that resembles giant hairless-looking rat humanoids. People can't seem to perfect them or have them look right even with the help of CG.

But I'm glad Rick Baker decided to do the traditional Wolf Man for this film instead of the hyper-extended legged creature everyone expects to see.
  • Agreed. For some reason the design eludes most people. I thought Underworld's designs were among the worst, especially given the budget.

Rick baker is the man. Dick Smith's prodigy, and keeping him self relevant in today's times by learning digital really proves his ability to evolve. To try to use that old make up as a blue print was ballsy. I have a friend who works at MPC, their doing a lot of the CG, and the shots he showed me looked fantastic. Anthony Hopkins looks bad as shit.
  • The Underworld rat-men are the worst. I'm very excited about this movie. I hope it turns out great like Bram Stoker's Dracula.
  • Aww, man, What Coppola/Oldman/Hopkins, etc. did with that floored me. I've seen that movie several times, and I'm still impressed by it.

If they accomplish anywhere near that with this film, I'd be elated.

And yeah, what gave the designers on Underworld the impetus to design hairless wolf men? Whatever it was, I'm sure it also inspired them to make them resemble vermin. Hahaha...unfortunate.
  • You forgot Ginger Snaps, a refreshing indie take on the werewolf genre that took it seriously and remained compelling. I liked it, anyway :o)
  • I don't even like the Howling design. For me it is just American Werewolf in London and maybe the cat creature in the Thriller video.
  • SO your saying the second best werewolf design was the CAT design from thriller. You understand my confusion.
  • Rick Baker owns the original Wolfman make-up, costume, and original kit Waggner used in the 1941 movie.
  • When Mark Romanek left this project, I felt like I'd been kicked off a chair. Whatever we get, it couldn't even dream of holding a candle to what Romanek had planned, I'm sure of that.
  • Way to decide before giving it a chance.
  • I was worried at first. But Johnston seems perfect for something like this as well. I have faith in it. Mainly due to Rick Baker's work in this.
  • the white sleeveless shirt.

    a classic wolfman staple.
  • the white ruffled shirt.

    a classic wolfman staple.

I really want to see this movie, it looks interesting to me. But, can someone tell me the real synopsis so far? Every site I go to has a different plot for the story.
  • that's pretty freaking sweet
  • I've been looking forward to this for such a long time. The casting is brilliant and Rick Baker is the f*cking man. I'm sold, I'm there. A werewolf movie with heart, the potential behind this is almost too good for them to screw up. I only wish the release date wasn't pushed back so far. Still -- I'll wait as long as it takes.
  • Nice art work.
  • the one pic looks like gilbert godfreid.
  • Hahahha..."OH my GAWWWD.....A full moon..."
  • the first picture, for sure!
speaking of which, whatever happened to Gilbert?
  • Del Toro looked dead awesome in the teaser and he's got good taste. If he's signed on at least the script must have been good.
  • The Werewolf in The Howling is great. Because of how demonic it looked. As for the cat-creature in Thriller? Are you smoking banana peels?

Another bad "Werewolf" was the man in a bear-man suit from "Silver Bullet".

It seems like they've been working on this movie for years. What is the hold up?
  • Nice to see the general film review folk wandering into the 3D forums. The new pelting tools for 3D modeling have really opened the doors for some great work. Now we need Rick to show an animation blend of the 2 models - man to beast.
