Warner Bros

Warner Bros has announced a bunch of new release dates, including dates for the following films: Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, Jonah Hex, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Clash of the Titans and a new date for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. The big shocker is that Warner Bros has decided to go head to head with two of Marvel’s big comic book adaptations. So the question is — will you see the next film from Christopher Nolan or Thor? The final Harry Potter film or The Avengers?

Green Lantern: Martin Campbell’s big screen adaptation of the DC comic book will hit theaters on December 17th 2010. Sony currently has the computer animated feature adaptation of Smurfs on the same date.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2:
With the first part of the final chapter set to hit theaters on November 19th 2010, Deathly Hallows Part II will be released just eight months later on July 15th 2011. DreamWorks Animation’s Master Mind is scheduled to hit theaters four days earlier, but the big shocker is that Warner Bros decided to go head to head with Marvel’s superhero teamup The Avegners. I’ve always had the feeling that Marvel will have to push back the release date of The Avengers since it was prematurely announced following the release of Iron Man. And Warner Bros putting the last Potter film in that slot furthers this theory.

Suckerpunch: The first live-action film directed by Zack Snyder not to be released on Snyder’s lucky week - the second week of March. Warner Bros has instead decided to release the film on October 8th 2010.

Jonah Hex: The big screen adaptation of the DC Comics western comic book starring Josh Brolin is now set to hit theaters on August 6th 2010, a week following Zack Snyder’s animated adaptation of Guardians of Ga’Hoole.

Inception: Christopher Nolan’s next film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 16th 2010, going head to head with Marvel’s Thor. This is the second of the newly announced release dates that goes head to head with a Marvel comic book film property. I wondering if Warner Bros is intentionally gunning for Marvel or if these dates are more strategic.

Clash of the Titans: Louis Leterrier’s remake of the myth of Perseus now has a March 26th 2010 release date, going head to head with DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon and Law Abiding Citizen.

Sherlock Holmes: The Guy Ritchie adaptation of the mystery classic will now hit theaters on December 25th 2009, about a month later than originally announced. Christmas is a big date, with Disney’s return to 2D animation with The Princess and the Frog and the Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.

Nolan has yet to make a bad film. I will see both, but Inception is my priority. I hope it makes more money than The Prestige. Such an awesome movie that not enough people saw.
  • Phillip Albrecht
Not allowed to see both? For big movies, I take the day off. I can spend the entire day in the theater!
  • thats why Uncle Sam invented Saturday and Sunday matinee showings!
  • Phillip Albrecht
The theater I go to has student discounts on Thursdays
  • but then you'd have to watch it the following week.
  • Either Avengers or Harry Potter will movie, I am still not holding my breath though that Avengers will come out in 2011... I don't really see Green Lantern being a Christmas release, wouldn't be surprised if it gets pushed back to summer. Glad to hear we'll see another Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder movie in the not too distant future, Sucker Punch sounds awesome. I don't really care about Sherlock Holmes being pushed back, I know I will see it, but I dunno I just don't feel excited about it.
  • Yeah, I agree that these dates might very well move.
  • Harry Potter will DOMINATE The Avengers.
  • While I agree that Harry Potter will beat out The Avengers no contest, I think the Avengers will still be a good contender in the fact that it will have all the comic book fans and all the comic-movie fans, many of which don't like Harry Potter.
  • Also I am glad to see Clash of the Titans moving along, Louis is a cool director.
  • haha. "The Squeakquel". that movie will be terrible.

that said, very interesting that WB is willing to take on "The Avengers". even if that little Harry Potter film will probably kick everyone's ass.
  • Inception and Sherlock Holmes I am totally down for, the others I will have to wait and see how they come along.
  • I'm going with Nolan and Avengers.
  • This year's christmas movie is going to be a tough decision. I'm a huge disney fan and I also enjoy RDJ being a badass. Hmm. Glad I have 10 months to decide.

If two movies I'm interested in seeing are coming out the same weekend, I'm quite down with going to the movie twice.
  • jobless
im extremely surprised that the green lantern doesnt have a summer release date, but as with startrek and harry potter, that is likely to change
  • Thor over Inception, but HP over Avengers.
  • Being the comic-book geek that I am, I would have to say that I'd rather watch The Avengers than the final Harry Potter film. I might get hell for saying this, but I don't really think that the Harry Potter films are all that good. I mean they're good stories, but the films are a little weak...
Definitely going to have to go with Nolan over Thor though. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw two movies that weekend.
  • starscream9289
I'll pay to see one and sneak into the rest.
  • Harry Potter fersure.
  • Too early to judge what any of those movies will be like, but based solely on what I know now, I'd prefer Inception over Thor.
  • Should say Snyder's first CGI?
cuz DOTD, 300 and watchmen are mainly Live-action
  • nawid ahrary
inception > thor since Nolan is my current favorite auteur
harry potter 7-2< avengers since aside from azkaban, potter movies are weak
Of course I bet a lot of theatre hopping will occur that day.
  • Screw Thor and The Avengers...seriously, they'll be fun movies but that's about it. I know everyone is amped for an Avengers movie, but I don't think it'll be all that good. Especially when you consider the track record of Nolan and the pretty impressive way the HP series has been handled.
  • I don't know, i mean i think Comic Book films have a great track record. I mean people been waiting for a Avengers movie so it might beat up on Harry.

Imagine a crossover where Captain America decapitates Harry with his Shield, Hulk Eats Ron and Iron Man hits on Hermione.
  • green lantern, and smurfs- two projects i could not be less excited for.

harry potter VS. avengers- i give HP the edge at the box office. the edge for my interest is really going to depend on how Avengers shapes out. so much is in the air for this project, that it has the potential to totally suck, or turn out decent.
  • oh, and Nolan should destroy Thor (although Thor could be a sneaky underdog if he's played by Cera).

How to train your dragon's plot sounds weak, so I'd go with Titans for that March.

I AM SOOOO excited for sherlock holmes. I'll probably catch the disney flick that xmas week too. Disney will probably put a lot of care into this project, since it's going to stir up a lot of anticipation.
  • Christopher Nolan > everything.

But The Avengers movie depends on the director and who is cast as Captain America.
  • zinkywinks
harry potter by faarrr... dont really give a damn at all about inception or thor
  • carg0
um, i dont live in communist China so i'll actually be able to see Nolan's next film, Thor and The Avengers at my discretion.

damn, i didn't realize a law was passed that prevents moviegoers from seeing whatever they want whenever. i must have missed the memo...

Yet I do respect ppl for there own tastes , I personally loath Harry Potter....

I would rather watch an Aliens vs Predator film,,,,
  • I hope Green Lantern goes from X-mas to Summer because then it wouldn't make much and there would be no hope for a sequel but a reboot. I hate Reboots.

Thor and The Avengers for me, I love Nolan's work beside Batman so that's a though decision. but i'll Take Cap whooping some bad Ass with the help of a Thunder god, and a Mean Green Giant, and an Iron Man over magic any day of the year.
  • Christopher Nolan. Nuff said.
  • To me, The Avengers -as a movie- is as real as flying pigs at this point.
  • Agreed.

I've made it a habit of being at the midnight showings for all the Harry Potter flicks. (And, yes, I know the books are better) But then again I also saw the midnight for Iron Man and the Dark Knight...
All I know is that I will be spending a lot of time at the theater : )
  • Rob
Interested by Inception and The Avengers, but none of the others. Inception's the only one I would expect to be a good film tho.
  • Yeah, how embarrassing was it for you to have to type out the word "Squeakuel"?

HP, hands down. I mean, i'm pretty jacked up for an Avengers movie...but being the crazy harry potter freak that i am, i'm afraid it takes the cake.
  • shocking to see how some people aren't in awe of a Green Lantern movie.

And hands down, Green Lanter has the best outfit in comicbook dom
  • freemachine
Tarsem Singh's WAR OF THE GODS (2010) ... enough said.
  • Im ready to see all these films. Harry Potter should fun to watch, and also seeing a remake of Clash of the Titans will be crazy. Cant wait.
  • I guarantee you guys that WB did this because they know that the Thor movie is going to get pushed back as well as The Avengers. I know it's still possible to make the Thor movie but it doesn't look like it so far. As for the Avengers spot, if Marvel doesn't move that date back, they will lost tons of money to Harry Potter.
  • Looking forward to clash of the titans!!!!!

    and he-man baby!
  • Eduke
i will see these movies.. and i thinkg too that the Avengers is going to be pushed back, not so sure about the Thor movie, but it looks that is going to be pushed back too.
  • optimusprime
I'm going for The Avengers and Nolan's Inception, but I think the release date for The Avengers might get pushed back, which is fine with me.
  • thankyoufor
    Defiantly Inception
  • wtf, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel."
    how laaaame.
  • shirley
christopher nolan next film and harry potter.
  • /film
interesting GL isn't a summer tentpole. tho i could def see a delay on that one.
  • AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!
  • Ben
I'm probably reading waaaaaay to much into this but the Sherlock Holmes/Princess and the Frog match up reminds me of the Minority Report/Lilo and Stitch heavy weight fight all those years ago. Or better yet, Casino Royale/Happy Feet. I don't think either studio is worrying about the other in this situation. And is anyone worried that the push back on Holmes is a good or bad thing in terms of quality.
  • Christopher Nolan is on a role right now, so I would see his movie over a most of these any day, he has earned it.
