Judd Apatow’s Pineapple Express Oscar Short Film

pineapple express oscars
I’ve done a bit of personal polling, and it seems like most everyone agrees that Judd Apatow’s Tribute to the comedy films of 2008 short film was the best moment of the 2009 Academy Awards. For those who didn’t catch it, Seth Rogen and James Franco reprise their roles from Pineapple Express — two stoners sitting on a couch, watching all the great and not so great comedy films of the last year. If you missed it, watch it embedded after the jump.

I found it as the highlight of the Oscars.
  • It was definitely the best part.
Granted, I felt it was my favorite movie of the year (not the BEST, the favorite).
So of course I loved it.
  • /filmhatesu
it was good. i enjoyed Ben Stiller's Joaquin more though. and steve martin/tina fey was good too.
  • They laughed at The Reader, and that made me laugh.
  • I liked this bit, but then I liked quite a lot of the show. I liked the two song and dance numbers with Hugh Jackman in particular, though the lyrics to the first song were far from hilarious. Guess I'm always up for a bit of top hat and tails business.

My favourite bit was the special attention lavished on the nominees. Some of those folks, and their films (Richard Jenkins, Anne Hathaway, Mickey Rourke) were far better than the winners.

A good ceremony overall, I think. And that's from somebody who didn't much like some of the big frontrunners.
  • Definitely hilarious, I can't get enough of yummyyy James Franco.
  • Agreed. Is it wrong that my fave part of this skit was the part with him and Sean Penn in Milk? lol.
  • I didn't think PE was funny, but this was a little better. Went on a little long for me. My favorite parts were the spots they did before Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting roles. Previous winners giving a synopsis of the nominees performance was nice.
  • Definitely the best part of last night. I would not object to a sequel to Pineapple Express. More of James Franco's character cannot possibly be a bad thing.
  • James Franco and Seth Rogen Genius!
  • Jack
Yeah, so genius to imitate Mike Judd material.
  • dave
Mike Judd, the baseball player?? Are you comparing JF and SR to Ren and Stimpy???? Maybe I should do a little fact checking before posting on the internet. Dur!
  • The look on James Franco's face when he saw himself kissing Sean Penn was hysterical.
  • Def the best part of last night, now I kinda hope they do another 'Pineapple Express'...second best part was Stiller doing Joaquin Phoenix...
  • i did enjoy this, but Stiller's Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant. that had me in stitches. i'm also glad to see that Steve Martin's still got it.
  • both were great. i give the edge to PE personally.
  • Forgot about that. Very funny.
  • Renee
My two favorite parts of the show were definitely the Pineapple Express skit and Ben Stiller doing Joaquin Phoenix on, was it Letterman? Although, I did think it was very moving to incorporate the previous winners into the unveiling of the nominees, I hope they keep that. I saw a video that talked about the Oscars and incorporated global perspectives about the show. It even had a clip referring to Barack Obama starring in "Mission Impossible". (a take on his impossible road to the presidency...funny)
  • Mark
Hey Peter - Here's a little something for your informal "poll" -- I thought this skit was terrible and patently un-funny, like all the other rubbish Apatow produces.
  • Jack
Blatant Beavis & Butthead rip-off. Apatow's creativity steam dwindling already................
  • KY Jelly
Pretty sweet. James Franco is a funny dude.
  • Wow... I'm sort of sad I missed that live. Too busy watching Zodiac. That was funny though.
  • Baconface
who can blame you? Zodiac is a great flick. severly underrated
  • Baconface
after Ledger winning, this was my favorite part of the show. absolutely hilarious

it was funny to see how much thinner Rogen has gotten since filming Pineapple Express

cant wait to see Green Hornet!!! dying for some director and casting news!!!
  • I browsed the comments out of curiosity to see if there's at least anyone else who also thinks this wasn't at all funny - hey Mark! I also think anything related to Judd Apatow is painfully unfunny. It's sad to watch how the guy is basically burying comedy while everybody is cheering. You'll have to admit that most of this guy's work and of his protegees (Rogen, Rudd) shares a certain type of characters (stoners or losers in their 40's) and mostly dick & balls / toilet humour. Which unfortunately most people seem to like. I for one don't like these type of characters, I don't wanna see movies made about them, if they were real people I'd avoid them, I don't find what they say and do as funny. I just wish Apatow would take his movies and go far, far away. And while I hate Apatow with a vengeance, I do like Kevin Smith' older work, who used to do R-rated comedies way better and with far more likeable characters.

Oh, and yes, this short film is just a Beavis & Butthead rip-off, like others have mentioned.
  • Hux
If you can and do avoid these characters in real life cib3k you can avoid the movies even easier.
  • Toilet humour? Yeah that's a fair criticism. But it's some of the funniest damn toilet humor ever.

"You've got period blood on my pants!!!" = hilarity every time
  • Fartie Lange
dude, Rogen is like, 26 and Rudd is 39 almost 40. and i know guys like Jonah Hill and Jason Segal are no wherew near 40

if you dont like it, dont watch it!
  • it's absolutely hilarious when he mistakes Love Guru for slumdog.
  • i love the look on his face while they were watching milk
  • Joe
Look on Franco's face during the Milk make-out scene + "I want to be intellectually stimulated. Or watch boys make love to Nazis." almost equal out the horrible job they did covering Best Song.

Seriously, a year like this, with only 3 nominees, and they still feel the need to shorten the music to 65 seconds a song while Hugh Jackman gets a 5-minute song and dance that has no real bearing on anything?
  • Really? It may have been overlooked but the consensus critically is positive (about 80% on metacritic and imdb). Personally, I found it quite boring.
  • edc
    that just wasn't funny.
  • who's a better actor? ronald reagan or barack obama? that's robert downey jr. man... i know. ha ha ha. brilliant.
  • Mike JUDD
Yeah. JUDGE Apatow is such a hack!!
  • Jack
    Is apatow's first name Judge??????

    What a queer!
  • was pretty good. I still think PE was a way better movie than Tropic Thunder as well. Didnt watch the Oscars though...to much crap.
  • that is really awesome
  • jamie
    wtf? that was terrible
  • icko
    Necro Butcher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • tom
I disagree, that was terrible. Steve Martin/Tina Fey was the best IMO
  • disappointed
That was the best bit of the night? Thank goodness I didn't bother watching any of it; that was ABYSMAL!
  • Yeah This was possibly the best part of the Oscars this year.
  • Ben Johnson
pineapple express is the best film ever made. Then its pulp fiction
