superman unleashed

/Film reader Alex Litel just sent me a link to a password protected page from the official Legendary Pictures website that lists “Superman Unleashed” as one of their upcoming films in development. The temporary plot synopsis included follows:

“Ramping up the action of its esteemed predecessor, the sequel to ‘Superman Returns’ promises to raise the stakes and take the audience to heights of action that no other superhero movie can achieve.”

So there you have it… Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros and DC are still working on a Superman Returns sequel, and not a complete reboot. The film will not be titled The Man of Steel, but instead Superman Unleashed.

One of my other sources claims that the title is just a working title and they are still hearing pitches from different writers.

Update: After publication of this story, the information has since been removed from the Legendary Pictures website.

Update 2: I want to give full credit for this scoop to Alex Litel. I made the mistake of thinking his email submission was just a reader sending in a scoop, but the fact of the matter is that he wrote about this on his personal blog first and defintiely deserves the credit for finding it.

  • 'The Man of Steel' title is so much cooler...
  • Dan
    Nice exclusive /Film!
  • Yah so clutch!
  • Eddie
I guess Jet Li could play Superman...
  • why bother. the last Superman film flopped.
  • B
a $200 million domestic flop? It wasn't that good but to call it a flop is not true at all.
  • Supermanny the Dog?
  • Unleashed...really?
  • Chadams
"Esteemed predecessor" better not be referring to any of the last 2 or 3 Superman movies.
  • akbar
Man Of Steel is way better than that stupid new title.
  • my thoughts exactly.
  • Yeah. "Unleashed" sounds stupid. But these are the same morons who made the decisions on the last movie, so what can you expect?

    Stupid title? Strike one.
Idiotic vague Sequel to a vague sequel? Strike two.
Unleashed mad dog Superman? Strike three.
  • Damien Thorn
you have just been reported asshole
  • who?
  • greycolumbus
I guess WB wants to run Superman into the ground? No studio would have the audacity to use "Unleashed" in the title unless they're Fox.
  • Hey dont make fun of Prison Break Unleashed.
  • Yeah Superman Unleashed sounds kind of dumb, just stick with Man of Steel. I am going to look at this a rumor for now until Warner's releases an official statement. But if this is true, I kind of would like Singer to return. Just for Fuck sake replace Kate Bossworth. I always thought Racher McAdams would be a good Lois Lane. But yeah pull a Dark Knight and get rid of Bossworth, and don't bring back Lex Luthor.
  • GloucesterGrandpa
Agreed! Lex Luthor has got to be one of the most overused villialns of all time. BIzarro or Brainiac would be a nice change
  • E35
I dont care what they title it as long as Bryan Singer is attached to direct it. He deserves another crack at Superman. Superman Returns was all bad, it was just a little sentimental, to a fault, toward the original Donner movie(s) (if you include the Donner cut of 2). I think with a another chance at Superman Singer would create a good balance of story/action as wells repsect for the Donner Superman while updating to a more modern version of Superman
  • E35
edit - "was not all bad"
  • Dannyb
I dont care what they call it as long as Singer is NOT involved!. He killed Superman. The worst part of the movie being the obsurd Superkid element! what was he thinking!!!
Not to appear homophobic, but Superman Returns was seriously camp/gay!! from the suit to the plot!
  • please define flop.

    production budget(with marketing): $245,000,000
    worldwide gross: $391,000,000
    dvd sales: $81,000,000
    merchandising: $60,0000

    total revenue: $215,000,000

yeah, total flop. (all numbers from the-numbers.com)
  • I'm not a fan of "Unleashed" in the title, but I *do* like that as an approach to the film. PLEASE give us some action sequences and a antagonist worthy of Superman. I'll vomit if they bring back Lex Luthor AGAIN.

    Vic
  • Let's hope it is just a working title.
  • Fred
isn't an "exclusive" when you're given something exclusively, not when you've found something on the web or someone else has and emailed you about it?
  • Fatherbradley
Holy Crap - you said it "Dr. Chicago", ditch Bosworth big time.... If you had to cast someone that age (to match Brandon), pick somone who excudes competence and is believable as a journalist. Reese Witherspoon with a Brunette wig would've ruled. And "Unleashed"? When was he "leashed?"
  • He's always been a good guy, I guess that's what they mean when they say unleashed, maybe he's not going to be so good anymore.
  • Accidental leak?
  • /filmluvesclark
that sounds like a total working title. they got the right idea though...just keep Routh. Superman on the big screen is one of those things that makes me feel like a lil kid.
  • I don't care what the name is, as long as it is better than Returns. I did not like Returns one bit.
  • Singer promised it would be, plus his past with sequels is pretty good. I mean the best X-men is the 2nd one.
  • /filmluvskrypto
ugh i know. I'm so tired of Luthor. Braniac or a full on invasion from apokolips would SOOO rule.
  • Bec
They should totally bring in Braniac.
  • Superman's revenge?!?! Attack of the superman? The Superman's Menace..... Why cant this ridiculous "superhero" just die
  • hadenuf
Ridiculous you say........er HELLO.....it's frickin superman, the DADDY of ALL superheroes, that's why he can't die. He could own all the other little punk heroes and is worthy of another film, without the loveydovey story admittedly......and the virtual wife stealing which is so beneath him. The potential is there for a film which outmatches all other hero films in terms of sheer, epic action.
  • how can you choose a title before you have a script or a director? the man of steel is obviously better, but i'm not convinced any title is going to stick right now. batman begins used to be called intimidation game remember? and yeah it would be good to have singer and routh back again...
  • Jim
"are still working on a Superman Returns sequel, and not a complete reboot."

...or it's something that's been sitting on their site for 2.5 years.
  • The Man of Steel would've been a better title IMO. But I'm just happy to learn that they're not rebooting the series, since I wasn't looking forward to another Supes origin story. Grant Morrison summed it up perfectly on the first page of All-Star Superman: "doomed planet... desperate scientists... last hope... kindly couple." That's all you really need to know.
  • I agree, I was hoping they would keep Man of Steel. This new title is ok, I can see why they would call it that since Superman supposed to be an angry god in this one.
  • Superman Returns Again, One more Time
  • It's Superman Returns: Man of Steel, again, one more time.
  • SOLID STRIKES BACK
TAKE THAT ALL YOU WHINY FANBOY BASTARDS!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!! I WAS RIGHT! SINGER'S COMING BACK! 3 YEARS WAS WORTH IT! *dances* Bring Routh Back WB. Woooo hooo!!
  • I hope it's true, we'll have to wait and see.
  • "Ramping up the action of its esteemed predecessor..."

That should be easy enough, seeing as how BORING the first one was...
  • jason B
'unleashed' is trying to hard to sound dangerous. i'd prefer MOS. please just let us keep routh & singer...or at least routh.
  • joshi38
Well, it worked for The Dark Knight.
  • Man, you're really stretching that one... especially cuz Danny the Dog was released in the States as Unleashed... hey, waitaminnit...
  • Wow way to put two and two together. I wouldn't have caught that if I didn't read your post.
  • A movie can make money on reputation and fan devotion alone. Doesn't make it a great movie. And the numbers are thoroughly askew.

Theatrical sales are a great way to superficially boost the reception of a movie, gauging the number of people who decided to see the movie based on trailers and hype. Ever walk out of a movie you paid money for feeling disappointed? Theatrical sales say nothing about the movie, and everything about the marketing.

DVD sales, I'd say are worth a bit more. Folks buy DVDs for better reasons than anticipation. According to the the-numbers.com (great site, by the way, thanks), the week prior, Ice Age: The Meltdown took in $129 mil. Two weeks prior to that, Cars took in $242 mil. The week after Superman Returns came out, Pirates 2 brought in $320 mil.

    Need more? In 2006 alone:

Walk the Line : $123 mil
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: $215 mil
    Chicken Little: $141 mil
Chronicles of Narnia, Lion Witch and the Wardrobe: $352 mil
    Eight Below: $104 mil
    X-Men: The Last Stand : $103 mil
    Click : $81 mil
    Over the Hedge: $126 mil
    Talladega Nights: $84 mil
The Devil Wears Prada: $95 mil

    And I think my favorite:

Lady and the Tramp - 50th Anniversary Edition: $121 mil.

Is it impressive to bring in $80 million in DVD sales? Sure. Does it live up to what Superman is, and more importantly, what they hyped Superman to be? No. Superman was a disappointment.

But seriously, though. I like that site.

There was a video game not too long ago called "Jaws Unleashed"

From what I remember it was pretty lame.
Is Warner saying they're looking to make a lame Superman movie?
