Let’s stop calling the next Batman film Batman 3, shall we? Let’s just call it the next Batman film - or TNBF, if you want. That’ll do. The Batman films didn’t start with Begins, you know. Not nearly.

IGN have discovered a tiny crumb of info on TNBF that is bound to fuel speculation. According to their detective work, the only screenwriter formally attached to the project is Christopher Nolan.

So, while that leaves David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan on the bench, it sort-of formalizes Nolan’s involvement in the development process.

IGN’s source was an official document from Warner Bros. to “a guild”, presumably the WGA. Studios are obliged to inform all guilds with the work lists of those toiling on their projects, and somehow one of these was intercepted by Bothans on the IGN friendlist.

This suggests to me that the project is at the sketchiest of sketchy treatment phases right now and I’ll speculate that another writer or writers will be named once any fleshing out takes place and, heck, I’ll go out on a ledge and say this other writer will be Jonathan Nolan and this time, David Goyer won’t be on board. Idle speculation, that’s all. That’s all there is to do at the moment.

In other TNBF non-news, Batman-on-Film have alleged that Nolan’s deal for Inception includes a Batman clause, shackling him to the cash cow that laid a giant egg for at least that one more go around. This claim has already been given the old non-denial denial at MTV but the one-for-them, one-for-me negotiation doesn’t seem entirely improbable. What does derail the claim a little is that Batman-on-Film name David and Jonathan and not Christopher as formally engaged writers, suggesting the exact opposite of IGN’s evidence.

I don't know. Jonathan Nolan's a great screenwriter too. I expect Chris will bring him in. I don't know if Goyer ever brought much more than comic book knowlage to the team.

You are right that Batman Begins was by no means the first Batman movie, but you gotta give credit to someone who can make the masses forget about the previous films and basically shift the beginning of Batman time.
  • Batman thr33
  • Until I hear a title I'm still calling it Batman 3. :-)
  • me too. pre-nolanverse batman movies don't count and we all know it.
  • let's NOT rush him, folks. We want a reallfy good sequel and he needs to take his time writing the screenplay.

I think christopher nolan is a good filmmaker (director, producer, and/or screenwriter) so I have faith in him.
  • Jon
The expectations are way too high for a third batman. And studios are renown to hire ad agencies that pump up the film way beyond it could possibly manage. If people go into Nolan's third film with low expectations, and it turns out phenomenal, then that would be best. But if it turns out more like Batman Begins and less like Dark Knight, then I think fans will be very disappointed even thought it is still a good film. As far as trilogies go, the third film being the best is a rare gem. So I hope Nolan takes his time and makes it as awesome as possible. Maybe this time they can give him the Oscar he so righteously deserves.

first of all there is no point to rush the next batman film aka TNBF. TDK hype still needs to die down when chris nolan comes back for TNBF it will be it will be great. but right now i feel we should not even talk about TNBF for along while cause its sort of getting annoying.

i feel Chris Nolan will bring back Jonathan Nolan cause they always work well together and they are brothers. now with David S. Goyer some reason every screenplay he does with another co-writer does well when he does it on his own it seems like rubbish. i dont think his a great comic screen writer that everyone think he is but i could be wrong.

This "scoop" amounts to a whole lot of nothing. As long as a project is 'under development' at a guild-signatory studio (read: all of them), there must be a guild-member writer officially assigned to the project. Since CN is the only writer currently drawing a salary for his work on it (even if its just nominal 'development' at a salary intended to just hold on to the option for his services at a later date - which is all that this is - the WGA will be officially notified of this.

JN & DG aren't currently 'locked in' writers with a pre-existing deals - nor were they on the last two during the similar period. They will be as soon as they actually begin work on it.

(I hope your Bothan is well-hidden. the Guilds really look down their noses at employees who leak even innocuous correspondence, as it really violates their members' rights, not to mention privacy.)

Jonathan is definitely going to be on board. I have to assume Goyer will be too. Got to bring the "dream team" back for round three.
  • I'm of the opinion that nothing should be tinkered with when it comes to the next Batman project. Bring everyone back, including Goyer. I have no idea how little or how much he did for the previous films, but I'm sure he helped somewhere and with his knowledge of all things Batman it wouldn't hurt to have him on board again.

can someone unsticky the post about you being on the top 25 blogs in time magazine.

we've all read it now. it makes it look like there are no new posts.
  • Better_Than_You
Oh good. The new guy who thinks he's the next Hunter Stephenson digs up nothing for us again! Lets give the speculation on Batman 3 a rest. :)
  • No offence meant to Hunter, but I don't think I'm the new anybody. I've been writing about film for almost 20 years now and, frankly, I'm only doing in this post that /Film thing - collating, commenting upon and linking to a news story from the web that /Film readers will be interested in.
  • I'm not sure that is the case. Perhaps it feels that way to high school graduates or college folk... but the 'masses' still love, respect and have nostalgic soft spots for Burton's first BATMAN. And for 1989, that movie was dark as hell.
  • I absolutely agree about not calling it Batman 3, it's simply not the case. I guess I'll stick with the suggested TNBF acronym until further notice.
  • Lee
i cant wait to see batman 3
  • i can only hope it is not catwoman, poison ivy, mr. freeze, or some other stupid villian... it has to be sinister as hell... and just plan freaking dark
  • No one cares until something official is released.
  • Craig M.
OK, I'll stop calling it Batman 3 (not that I've ever called it that on message board or comment thread anyways). Thanks for this update on Batman 8.
  • Dvq
the next Batman movie will be "Batman", just like that, mark my words.
  • ... and that would make Batman Returns pitch black, relatively speaking.
  • that picture of adam west & burt ward just makes me wonder why we have to put up with the wb homoerotic garbage that's the new violent batman when they won't release the campy crud that was the old teevee batman ...
  • You can pick up a DVD of the old show, plus that picture is from the DVD of the special "Return to the Batcave".
  • Brilliant.
  • They just need to have a meeting a figure out who's going to be writing this and have it done in a few months. After that's settled, let Chris go do his hting and come back to the franchise when he's ready and crank out another awesome Batman film.
  • Don't worry about that guy Brendon. You know we enjoy reading your stuff and it is very interesting. Thanks for the heads up on the whole Batman situation so far.
  • Yeah I was watching "Returns" the other day and almost every other scene had something very dark in it. The whole scene with Penguin and Catwoman talking about Batman but with sexual undertones and the fact that Penguins bites a guy's nose off. That movie was very Pitch Black indeed.
  • You're probably right about Goyer but it would be nice to have all three of them back working together side by side bringing us the next great installment of Batman.
  • :O catwoman is NOT stupid
  • Krazy Joe
I'll be calling it Batman III, that you very much.
  • If Nolan can turn a guy who wears clown make-up or a guy who runs a secret organization of ninjas into a cool concept. He can do that to any villian who chooses from Batman's rogue gallery.
  • nolan's brother will be writing this film
  • Mighty KC
    "Batman 3" works fine.
"Begins" was the first of this line of Bat-films. Everyone knows what someone means when they refer to "Batman 3". "The Next Batman film" just sounds like the kind of ridiculous nonsense that I've come to associate with your posts, Brendan. Stop being such a pretentious douchebag.
  • Gut!
  • Jermaine
Perhaps a Johnny Depp version of the Riddler would make for a better film- a cerebrial actor playing a cerebrial villian (great screenwriting considered) . Or a Jason Stratham version of Victor Freeze - character/actor combos the play to the chess match factor that the late Heath Ledger established for the audience. By the way, I believe Ms. Weisz would make a better Poison Ivy.
  • I think it should be a great film even though if Christopher Nolean does a Sequence to Batman 2 3 4 i don't know about 5 or 6 he's done it before with
batman begins and the dark knight why not, I would like to see him add the

Penquin&Cat woman next or possibley the riddler, but who I really don't like
Christian Bale as the batman so can you please bring Michal Keaton back,
    to Gotham city,

    Thanks Christa Pellicci
