The Simpsons in HD

This Sunday night, The Simpsons will, for the first time ever, be broadcast in High Definition. They have created a brand new opening of the show to mark the occasion. But you don’t have to wait until Sunday to see it, check it out after the jump.

  • So they are beating South Park by a month...
  • SouthParkStudios.com
South Park has been producing their shows in HD for a while now. Comedy Central just hasn't had the capacity to air them.
  • it's sad that simpsons can't hold a torch to south park anymore. i love south park...but simpsons is so engrained in my childhood.
  • Wayne
    BAMF!
  • Finally?
  • Like it. The simpsons will never get old
  • Its about time.
  • The tv falling was classic and HDTVs being worth every cent.
  • Zing. Simpsons still got it.
  • Great opening, may just watch The Simpsons tomorrow, have not done that in a while.
  • Good! They totally deserve it.
  • Palmer
Cool. Although I did notice last week did King of the Hill was being broadcasted in HD.

Cool. Although I did notice last week that King of the Hill was being broadcasted in HD.
  • Finally they updated the intro ^_^
  • The Simpsons is still relevant? ;d
  • it's a classic. it broke ground for so many other shows. imo, it will always be relevant, even if it isn't funny.
  • Pete (original)
well, it's definitely not that funny anymore.
  • how can anyone HATE such a classic show?
  • seriously. dislike, sick of, don't care for.

but you can't hate the simpsons. that's just Unamerican.
  • Chris
Is that couch gag a nod to the Hitchhikers Guide?
  • Great to see The Simpsons moving with the times. I like that the show has held its own and hasn't changed too much, hasn't tried to change its humor. It hasn't 'gone downhill' at all-- it has just plateaued. And for fans, that's just fine.
  • about time the primetime cartoons got with the program, they were the last major holdouts to HD, besides "reality" shows... now time warner just has to carry more HD channels... we STILL don't get sci-fi, usa, cartoon network, spike, fx, comedy central, msnbc, mtv OR amc in HD.... yet, we get greenTV, hgtv, food network and animal planet in HD........... morons
  • Jake
Well I have TWC here in NYC and I get all the channels you listed in HD. They added them in December
  • greycolumbus
    I hope this becomes standardized.
  • I'd love to see Sideshow Bob in HD! :)
  • see the individual curls on the individual dreadlocks.
  • Nice. It's still not going to confess me to watch the new episodes, it's lost it's humor. But anyway, i'm still happy with the old episodes. =)
  • That looks really good, it looks alot better than that 90s version they've used forever.
  • I'm not a fan. The thing about this new intro is that it's trying to incorporate too many of the secondary characters into the intro. Don't get me wrong, the supporting cast is what makes the show as funny as it is. But the show is still centered around the family, and I think the intro should reflect this. Animation looked good as ever though!
  • the show has created a world. a wide world of characters that we all know and can identify. i think it's fitting that they showcase the world in their intro.
  • Andrew Hovi
This is terrible. The Simpsons hasn't been great since season 8, and they've been absolutely terrible since season 12. The show is no longer relevant, and no longer cutting edge. The Simpsons used to ride the edge as far as they could, and their writers were all brilliant. Brad Bird was their animation consultant in the heyday, and it's clear that this smooth and crisp animation is not appropriate for the show. Should have been off the air years ago.
  • i think other shows came along, and just pushed the envelope way further.

that doesn't make the show irrelevant. if it's still on, that means it's still making money, which means it still has an audience.

your opinions on what dictates great television are just that, opinions. many people still watch and love the simpsons, and it will continue to run on air until the people stop watching.
  • Great, perfect proof the show has not gone downhill. I love the new beginning.
  • I don't know if I would go that far. the show has obviously gone downhill. Its rare that they do anything funny.
  • regardless, i'm buying it. i just set my tivo in case i forget tomorrow, but i won't be missing the HD broadcast.
  • not where i live... not really a shock that nyc'ers get things before the rest of us
  • Finkelworth
Not a fan. I just like the old cell animation way better, it has more charm imo. this is too clean and crisp. season 3-7 are prob the best years for that show and the animation style was defined what the show needs to look like in those seasons.
  • The new title is okay, to be honest I totally disagree with anyone who claims that the show has NOT gone downhill. It has - very obviously - changed the style of it's humor and thus, is not as funny as it used to be.
Do I blame the writers? Yes and no, after such a long time it's very hard to come up with interesting storylines I'm sure...yet even so they've managed to turn every member of the family (particularly Homer) into a characature of themselves. None of them act the way they used to and I find it very frustrating to watch these days.

I love the early seasons and still laugh out loud every time I watch them, it's such a shame that Matt Greoning is letting this show slip into such a mess.

This is all my opinion of course, but it's impossible to deny that the show hasn't changed for the worse, even if you like the new eps, they simply do not compare to the older seasons.

    </rant>
  • obin
i agree with every single letter in that rant :)
  • lost
erm?! maybe for the states but SKY has had the simpsons on sky1 HD for nearly a year now.
  • Hmmm, I kinda dislike seeing the intro changed. It's like walking into your your livingroom, and see that someone has painted the walls a different colour. It feels kind off.

    That said, best couchgag ever.
  • good analogy. although change is good. especially for a show that has been running for 20? years now.
  • Ryan T
Pretty good new opening. It feels a little too late though. I mean, the show probably only has a few seasons left. I liked the little easter eggs for fans in the opening though, like how marge is buying tomacco juice and mr. sparkle soap.
  • That new extended title is alright for a one-off 'first HD broadcast' episode, but it seems a little over-populated for my liking (the first 40secs or so, i.e. 'usual' episode opening), it's as if they have tried to encapsulate every seasonal character available in the opening and seems 'cluttered' to the older, yet a lot more slicker opening my opinion.
  • That's exactly what I thought.
  • boywonder
    depressing.
  • Kathryn Egan
brillent d simpsons al d way ha UP IRELAND!
  • that is hilarious. i love how they go to space...
  • DS82
The new opening feels slow, artificial and over-produced. I hope they just use it for one episode. The original Simpsons opening is what made the show. It's like Six Feet Under changing their already brilliant opening. Not impressed.

gota give it to them.thats one of the longest running primetime shows ever.the amazing thing about it is that it's a cartoon!! who woulda thought a cartoon would have outlasted shows with real actors...and even though they may have slacked a bit, they still have what it takes because if they didnt, fox wouldnt have renewed them for a couple more years.it's hard to come up with new material.that's why most shows cancel after a while..that and because the actors outgrow their roles.but thats why the simpsons worked.they were timeless.they didnt age.. and with a cartoon you had no boundaries of what you can do.i've watched the simpsons ever since i graduated high school in 92 and to have a show still running now is just amazing.my hats off to them! wow just think,if maggie did age, she'd be older then some of these readers.
