Iron Man 2: Eliza Dushku Wants to Be The Black Widow

Eliza Dushku appeared on the Howard Stern Show on Sirius/XM Radio this morning to promote her new television show Dollhouse. Things got interesting when the topic of conversation went to Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man. Dushku explained that she would love to play The Black Widow in Iron Man 2.

“They’re doing Iron Man 2, and I’m so perfect for the Black Widow character, that they just need to get into it. They need to understand… I just learned Russian because I had to play a Russian girl in Dollhouse.”

I get the impression from the way she just brought it up that she’s already either put her name in for the part or possibly even auditioned for the role. Emily Blunt was awarded the role but 20th Century Fox has an option on the actress and the studio wants her to play the romantic lead in Gulliver’s Travels. Last we heard the two production schedules were conflicting and Blunt might be forced to give up the role. And if that happens, Marvel will need a new Black Widow. Eliza went to give a plea to the audience to convince Marvel Studios to give her a chance.

“Maybe we could all tell them. Lets get on a Black Widow Iron Man 2 campaign.”

If there isn’t an online petition, I’m sure one will be created any minute now. And later when Dushku was leaving the studio, she told Howard to “call Favreau” and put in a good word fr her. Thanks to /Film reader Christopher M for the tip.

  • Awesome! Eliza Dushku would make the best Black Widow.
  • SuckySucky
    2nd!She is albanian right?...!
  • Fartie Lange
shes usually pretty attractive, but this one time i saw her w/ out make up on and she looked hideous. seriously, she looked like a freaking monster. like Shrek, or something

but, like, if she came up to me and wanted to bang me, id totally be in to it
  • get over it, loser. Surprise! Women aren't born with make-up. Moron.
  • Yeah she is hot and all but like what has she been good in? I'm up for Michelle Monaghan, but thats just a weird top of the head choice.
  • Um...she was pretty amazing in Buffy and Angel.
But maybe I'm biased, being a huge fan of both.
  • Ryan
    Eh...find someone else.
  • Yeah she'd look good in the suit and can punch and kick. But does she fit it amongst the films dramatic talent. I pose it to you: No.
  • Has she really had a chance to prove she got the acting shops to match those in Iron Man? No
She did a hell of a job on both Buffy and Angel and I think given a chance she could do an amazing job in this role, and hold her own with the big boys.
  • Not feeling it. Doesn't make sense to me as an out of left field genius casting. If that would be the case I'd say Christina Hendricks, the redhead from Mad Men fits the bill.
  • Christina Hendricks?? outside fans of that show nobody has a clue of who she is including me...
  • Not to sound really superficial (though I guess I am) but Christina Hendricks is ridiculously curvy and while I'm sure she's got the spunk and sexuality, I don't think her body type would work well in the outfits that they'd be using for the character.
  • Christina Hendricks?? outside fans of that show nobody has a clue of who she is including me...studios don't hire obscure actresses to star in large budget films with the option of more films including a solo movie...lol...Dushku has a rabid fanboy following in the exact demographic they are aiming at...it makes a lot more sense than you think...she also would take the low pay that is more than likely being offered for the role....I think it's a better idea than Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry or Jessica Alba being cast in previous comic book films...
  • Tru dat. With the genre work she's done,it makes a lot of sense to cast her in this movie exactly because the fanboys know her and love her. You make a good point. I'm all for it.
  • I guess you could make the argument that this is a good idea money wise, but I disagree with hiring her just because she went on Howard Stern and really wanted to play this part. I think that Favreau knows what he's doing won't cast Dushku. He already has an ensemble cast, why mess that up with some one with know acting credentials other than Bring it On.

Well except playing Faith on Angel which was a role she pulled off brilliantly and was far closer to requiring the skills of a Black Widow than anything the unimpressive Blunt has played.

You know, angsty, kick-ass, menacing, sultry, strong, and weak.

"The star of 'Wrong Turn' wants to play one of the female leads in 'Iron Man 2'"
Doesn't really make me want to jump for joy...
  • oh hell no.....she would suck for that role

I'd want Blunt or someone else completely different.....no Dushku...noooo!
  • yup!
  • thats what i was wondering.
  • I'd watch anything with Eliza Dushku in it. Where do I sign up?
  • Sure, why not?
  • Yum Hendricks. I don't think she fits the character, but I would watch her try.
  • GIMME WORK, PLEEEEAAAAAASSSSE. I'LL DO JUMPING JACKS. LOOK!
  • I'd give her five bucks for that.
  • The_Kid
If Emily Blunt has to drop out, i wouldn't mind Eliza in the role as Black Widow, that and she's super hot
  • TinaTurnersTampon
    Too bad...
I wanted to be a Unicorn

and it never happened... she`ll get over it

    I did
  • I have never heard of the black widow, it must be a comic book character. (I watch the super hero movies but know nothing of where they came from.)
Awesome to hear some things about Iron Man II. I wish I would hear more about the 3rd Batman film.
  • you'll probably have to wait as it's likely not Nolan's next film (look around this site it was reported a couple of days ago) But we got The Prestige between BB & TDK and I'm all for having a non-Batman Nolan movie to hold us over while he takes a break.
  • I've been a huge fan of Eliza Dushku ever since Buffy and Angel. She was amazing in both shows and she is completely gorgeous. I think she could pull the role off splendidly. And, while I'm a huge fan of Emily Blunt too, I think Dushku can evoke the sexuality that Black Widow has better. And the mere fact that she is actually passionate about wanting to play the role makes me think she deserves to get it. Sure, she's been in some really crappy stuff since Buffy and Angel ended, but I'm pretty sure any actress would have been bad (aka the things she's been getting have been crap, not her). I think it would work.
  • I disagree, I think that just because an actor is lobbying for a part doesn't mean they should automatically get it. There are way to many examples to name one but you get the idea, if we let actors who really wanted the role to have it, we'd have alot more crappy movies. Dushku would make this movie crap, or at least she would try her best to.
  • Well maybe she shouldn't AUTOMATICALLY get it, but the fact that she has the passion to seek it out should mean she should at least be considered.
  • If she really has a passion for it, she would have called Favreau up herself or at least had her agent do it. She shouldn't have seemed so desperate on a radio show and should have done something about it other than that. I think that since she has gone public with the whole thing that she might be considered but ultimately she won't be cast.

Unfortunately in all three films I've seen her in (PayneQuantunHitman), she's stunk the place out. So what if Olga is Russian? A little bit of acting would help.

Eliza has chrasima and the ability to play kick-ass, menacing, seductive, and tormented. Anything other than wooden seems beyond Olga.
  • Chris
Isn't the new trend hiring real actors for these super hero roles? (Downey, Ledger, Bale, Rourke) What the hell is this girl known for? Thanks but no thanks Dushku. Concentrate on furthering your Wrong Turn role into a straight to DVD franchise.
  • Scottie
Chris is right. Iron Man 2 needs REAL actors. Dushku has had some campy sexy roles, but am I the only one that thinks she peaked in 2002?
  • Was 2002 the Bring It On movie? if so, than yeah that was her peaking point.
  • Bring It On was in 2000.
  • Oh, well thanks for clearing that up for me Angela.
  • Please. When it was announced that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker, everyone freaked out and thought he was a terrible casting choice. Hindsight is 20/20 isn't it.
  • bule
maybe shell be good? the people around her will make her better, or at least help.
  • hmmmm could be interesting...
  • Dvq
oh please, dear god no, dont let it happen!.
  • Weyland_Yutani
    no outfits. problem solved. :)
  • Weyland_Yutani
She's a bad choice for the role. Hey, more power to her for trying for a paycheck though.
  • I thought that was a little pathetic on her part. I mean come on, the role has been cast and she's still trying to get it. I know that it's possible for Blunt to drop out but they need to pick someone besides Dushku.
  • KCUser
Well except playing Faith on Angel which was a role she pulled off brilliantly and was far closer to requiring the skills of a Black Widow than anything the unimpressive Blunt has played. And you still haven't pulled any names out.

Olga? Have you seen Max Payne and Hitman, I have though I wish I hadn't.
She's more wooden than your average plank of wood and about as much personality.
  • Oh sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to be naming people other than Blunt and Dushku, Alright, here it goes, I would say Kate Beckinsale or Angelina Jolie would do a better job than Dushku. I think maybe they would do a better job than Blunt, I mean who knows? Anyway, I only mentioned Kate and Angelina because you mentioned them earlier.

Oh yeah, I get what you're saying about Dushku and how she's perfect for the part in your eyes because she can speak a little Russian and knows how to seem action oriented. All I'm saying is that she's not even up for the part, we're only talking about her because she's lobbying a little too hard for something she's not going to get.
