Christopher Nolan’s next film won’t be a third Batman movie. But before fanboys freak out and begin drawing conclusions that might not exist, consider the following: this was expected by most everyone in the industry — we knew Nolan wanted to take a break and possibly work on something else (he’s made jokes about making something “very intimate, small story that happens to be photographed on a ridiculously large scale.” This does not necessarily mean that Nolan won’t helm a Dark Knight sequel. Remember, Nolan filmed The Prestige in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

And the good news is that Warner Bros is producing this film, which says something in itself. The studio wants to keep Nolan happy, and by greenlighting this new film, they are doing just that. So what is this film? Inception is described by THR as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind” and is an original screenplay written by Nolan. The plan is to begin shooting this Summer and Warner Bros hopes to release in Summer 2010. No further details have been revealed at this time, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on the project.

As for a third Batman film, even if Nolan worked on a screenplay and preproduction duties (storyboards, concept art) while in production on Inception, the earliest the filmmaker could go into production would be Summer 2010. Dark Knight took 14 months from the start of prinipal photography until the locked and loaded final cut.

Well this sounds interesting. Looking forward to further news about this project.
  • I wonder if whiney TDK fanboys are going to cry over this.

It's better for Nolan to chill and work on other ideas before he goes back to the drawing board for Batman. It's not going to be easy to write a sequel to TDK.
  • way to reiterate Peter's first few sentences.
  • sean
    lol owned
  • how am I owned by that statement? Idiot.
  • ret.ro.bot
You clearly have an anger management problem and are more than likely a total prick.
  • Whatever it takes. Let the man breathe. He has to get into his mode when working on something like Batman. And I loved The Prestige a lot.
  • The description posted is great! I look forward to anything Nolan does, and I'm glad Warner Bros. is keeping him happy. :)
  • luke_test
I guess we are looking at 2012 release date for next film. I'd imagine WB will want a summer release date. So he does this film until Summer 2010, starts working on Batman 3 after and starts shooting in Summer 2011 for release in Summer 2012
  • Nah, I bet it will be out in 2011. A 3 year wait just like TDK. I am glad he is doing something else before he heads back to batman. Sounds like a cool concept, even though it doesn't tell us much.
  • mr_blonde
There are already Avengers and Captain America in summer 2011. Imo, summer 2012 release would be perfect for Batman 3
  • REAL6
It means just like The Prestege. He's going to do one movie before he tackles Batman again. DOnt cry. You cant do two of the same movies in a row. He needs room to breathe. As much as i loved The Dark Knight, ill wait 3 years for the next one. Take your time Nolan!!!
  • Zinc
How is this surprising to anyone? People have been saying he's probably going to take a break between films again.
  • Jeff L
    Yay, Nolan!
  • He should call it quits on the franchise.
  • Totally! Get out while the public cries for more, as George Costanza says "end on a high note".
  • He should end his bid on the Batman series. I mean honestly, how many franchise directors keep going and going until their rep is tarnished?
  • How can you automatically presume the 3rd one will suck? This guy made 'The Prestige'! I think he knows a little something about making a quality film...
  • It's not that he wouldn't make something good, its that anything less than the Joker will start to tarnish his name.
  • filmkid
im glad, Nolan needs a break from TDK plus Nolan said before him and WB have a good relationship too. we are in no hurry for another batman movie anyway cause TDK will keep us happy for awhile until Nolan come back hard with Batman 3.
  • nolan wrote this? guy's keeping it busy.
  • No, Christopher Nolan's third film will not be a Batman movie. that's because Christopher Nolan's third film was Memento. Believe it or not, the guy did exist before Batman
  • ach, ignore my snark. it used to say 'nolans third film will not be a third batman movie.'
  • This new project sounds promising, I mean it's from Nolan himself, it has to be good. I'm sure one day he'll get started on another Batman flick.
  • cdub
Good for him.....take your time with a 3rd Batman. Nolan is doing it the right way rather then rush out a crappy sequel unlike Iron Man which is destined to suck.
  • why do you have the notion that the Iron Man sequel will suck? I mean, where's the weight in that argument? Because it's Marvel? I'm not getting it.
  • cdub
Iron man will suck cause they are completly rushing it into production. Favraeu stated that they are making the movie backwards. Starting with sets and locations before even having a screen play even finished. I loved the first Iron Man, but I have bad feelings about the sequel. They dumped Howard and now have approached Mickey Rourke for the villian. It seems very formulaic to me. sorry if you disagree.
  • I think this is great news! I don't want to see another batman film right away. People need to remember that the Prestige is better than both Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. (but not combined)
  • I'm glad he's not rushing the third movie, or giving into fan demand. Sam Raimi did that for Spider-Man 3 and look how that turned up.

I can't see Nolan making a third Batman that's better than TDK, the best villain was just used and now that they can't use Joker again, it's not going to be as good. I don't even see why they need to make another Batman movie, the last one was so great.
  • Listen, I love the TDK too but come on! How can someone in their right mind believe that it can't be improved upon. There are endless, intresting storylines and characters spread over the 50 years of batman comics. Nolan can and will make a superior third batman film. (knock on wood)
  • I always figured Spiderman 3 turned out crap because Raimi was forced to use Venom by the studio, so his heart wasn't into the movie. I hear he absolutely hates Venom and wanted nothing to do with the character.
  • Listen, I love TDK too but come on! How can someone in their right mind believe that it can't be improved upon. There are endless, intresting storylines and characters spread over the decades of batman comics. Nolan can and will make a superior third batman film. (knock on wood)
  • Why do you have so many minus in your points?
  • Smitty
I agree with you on this one. Any way we can can get Busey to be a villain?
  • This is good news. The formula worked well in the past. I'll be in the theater for anything Mr. Nolan does.
  • prophecy_projectz
    This isnt a big deal.
He went and did a movie between Batman Begins and TDK and he still managed to get the sequel out 3 years after the last one.
He should do a film in between. Im sure he's planning the other Bat film outside of this
  • Nolan + sci-fi + "architecture of the mind," whatever the hell that means = awesome.

I've always wanted to see him do a sci-fi film.
  • freemachine
Good. Nolan should keep his projects diverse and not fall into the trap that Raimi has with the Spider-Man franchise.

Has anyone here seen "Following"? It was one of Nolan's first films and it's an amazing achievement considering his budget. It just proves how versatile his is and that he doesn't require $150 mil to pull of a good film (unlike Michael Bay).
  • if you film a franchise back to back, you're gonna suffer with the quality. Look at poor Raimi and Singer (X1, X2 and then another superhero Superman).

Now look at the hype with Raimi's latest horror film, and Singer's Valkyrie.
  • Like Burton did? We all see how that ended up...(nipples-bat suit, Chris O'Donnell's bitchass Robin)....I say get some R&R, make this (badass sounding) 'Inception' film, THEN make a high quality Batman flick...
  • Or he could realize, the chance of ever living up to TDK is slim to none. He could call it quits and use his expertise to help create original pieces of cinema that will go down in history.

Besides, if he quit now he could live out the story and give the movie going community the batman films they deserve. You know, when Michael Bay takes over.
  • Zinc
You are delusional to think TDK can't be topped. It was far from perfect. Bruce/Batman and Two Face's parts were written weakly, and Nolan has always sucked at writing or directing females. I say this is good, gives them even more time to plan out a good script.
  • Jack
Two-Face wasn't written weakly, he was fine, it's just no one can realise that because they're too busy obsessing over the Joker, leaving poor old Harvey sadly overlooked in my opinion.
  • See that's the thing, he would have to beat Heath's performance, with whomever he were to cast. No matter what he does now in this franchise, it will be compared to The Joker. I am not delusional, I just don't think he can pull it off in this franchise.
  • Brian Rodden
Good. Take your time Christopher Nolan. Everyone's expectations are so high right now that it wouldn't even matter how good a third one is. This new project sounds interesting. Hopefully Bale is on board...also it did take 3 years between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight so it's a good sign that he's not just jumping into a 3 right now.
  • The_Kid
I think this is a good thing, it's better he take a break and work on something different than trying to make a Batman 3 in a rush, that and Nolan is a really good filmmaker, I wouldn't want him to just keep making Batman movies. Better for him to work on other projects as well.
  • What does this mean for Batman 3?

It means leave him alone about that fucking movie!
  • Hardly news to anyone who follows Nolan's philosophy on "one for them, one for me". Calm down, fanboys.
  • it's a good idea he's not jumping on Batman right away anyway IMO, not his style.
  • roachj
Inception sounds pretty great already. All Nolan films have been good so for, and i'm a huge fan of thinking sci-fi films, and this sounds great. I will be hugely anticipating this one.
