Alex Winter to Remake The Gate in 3D!

A few years ago, rumblings started in regards to a remake of the 1987 floor-bursting creature feature The Gate. According to Production Weekly’s reliable Twitter, it’s now moving forward with director/un-Ted, Alex Winter, at the helm and will satiate today’s masses with devilish imps in glorious 3D. With no real evidence whatsoever, Devin at CHUD suggests that original star, Stephen Dorff, is free to reprise his role. Hey, he worked with Christian Bale on Public Enemies: he can obviously still deal with a hell hole…bad jk.

The original PG-13 film is a nostalgia boner for many thanks to the suburban setting, a large helping of stop-motion effects, and a plot that spoofs the then-controversy over heavy metal. It also exploited the golden days when kids were fascinated by mysterious holes in the ground that, sadly, they often dug themselves. See also: The Pit. Last year, Winter was hired to pen Howard Stern’s endless wet dream/remake of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and probably failed to see Lost Boys: The Tribe because it was an abortion.

Discuss: C’mon, this is one remake you can’t really get mad at, amirite?

  • Im still to witness my first 3-D film...there must be some hype behind it if everything is going towards 3D....
  • Just a question...what is going on with this surge in 3D movies within the last month??? It seems like every other box office film is in 3D. I love the gate, should be a wild ride in 3D.

I know it's pretty crazy. I already know of three other horror movies that are going to come out in 3-D and I bet that there are more. Hollywood has decided to revive an old gimmick to help sell out seats so they can get $$$ at the box office.
  • The Gate was fun when I was a kid...I remember my brother and I going to see it in the theaters and laughing. I don't have a problem with a remake because it wasn't that great to begin with and does it even really live on today? I haven't seen it since I was a teen...I'd be a little scared to...it might disrupt my fun memory. lol If Alex Winters wants to take it on cool, its not like he can fuck it up, can he?
  • Right you are! Bill S. Preston, Esquire.

Ok, gotta get this outta the way quick, He was Bill, not Ted.
ok...sorry, just the elitist in me.
While Hollywood is sucking lately with doing all these remakes one after the other of iconic films and true classics, why not do a B-horror film that was pretty fun in it's time. I still like the movie. Also, I remember all my friends and I going to see Gate II at a friend's house...later, sigh...I bought the laser disc.

"Hey, he worked with Christian Bale on Public Enemies: he can obviously still deal with a hell hole…bad jk."

Um, actually Stephen Dorff himself has a reputation of being difficult, as does almost EVERY LEADING MOVIE STAR. Just because one guys rant got caught on tape doesn't mean he's the only one that behaves this way---from some stories I've heard, that Christian Bale tirade was pretty mild compared to other stars.
  • i think alex winder did pretty well with the ben 10 race against time movie. so i see a lot of potential with him having a pretty stable directing career. lets hope alien force works out well...

The Gate was awesome!! I loved it when I saw it when I was young on late night TV! This could be good.

If you want to see what Alex Winter can do with practical fx. Go check out "Freaked" or any of the really cool spots he shot for MTV in the 90's. Consider me intrigued.
  • "Freaked" is awesome.
  • No this is a bad idea. The original Gate sucked so bad and shouldn't even be thought of ever again.

I saw Gate 1 and 2, with the latter having a swinging minion in the cage. It was hilarious, it was minus Deacon Frost though
  • Never heard of the Gate either...
  • as a kid, i remember The Gate being a very fun movie. It wasn't a horror movie per say, but more like the Poltergeist in its tone.
  • I've never even heard of The Gate.
  • that makes two of us.

but I was 1 at the time of its release. talk about ooooold school
  • FINALLY! ITS ABOUT TIME SOME ONE REMAKES THE GATE!!!!! HAHAHA, BRING BACK STEPHEN DORFF?? I BET YOU I AM THE ONLY PERSON ON THIS WEBSITE TO EVER SEE AND OWN THE GATE: PART II. PLACE YA BETS, PLACE YA BETS...

Ahem... *cough* Have two versions of The Gate II on dvd. Known as The Gate II The Trespassers and Gate II Return to the Nightmare... same movie. The backside of the dvd cover art (Gate II) reveals a picture from a scene not even the movie, showing two characters not in the movie either. Also have Gate II Return to the Nightmare original 27x40 video and laserdisc promo poster, framed. And as for the VHS and laserdisc themselves, they're here as well. VHS cover art, the backside, has a wicked shot of Louis Tripp (Terrance) in a hooded cloak performing some mad demonology. Me and Louis Tripp go way back... smallest. lips. on. the. planet.

    How much you bettin'??
