New York Comic Con: Surrogates Trailer

Shortly after the Up panel at the New York Comic Con today, we received a look at the trailer for Jonathon Mostow’s upcoming live action adaptation of The Surrogates starring Bruce Willis. The film tells the tale of a future where people can transplant their minds into robotic bodies with ease and experience the world without any consequences. That, of course, leaves the door open for all sorts of risky behavior. Willis plays an FBI agent tracking down a criminal who is bent on forcing humanity to live their own experiences again, instead of relying on these robotic surrogates.

At this point, the trailer does little to sell the film as anything unique. While the core concept is new, it also looks like yet another Bruce Willis cop film, and a particularly cheesy one at that. Shots of Willis’s character jumping long distances (as a surrogate) seem downright laughable—which is troubling because I believe this is the final cut of this trailer. Think of the Matrix/Ghost in the Shell acrobatics gone horribly wrong and you’ll have an idea of what I mean. The other action elements seem similarly cheesy, and most everything else seen in the trailer does little to wash off the stink of mediocrity for Mostow post-Terminator 3.

I was hoping that maybe it was just a badly cut trailer, and that we’d receive some more information to get me excited about the film. Unfortunately, all we got was a bunch of Wilhelmina models handing out cards for chooseyoursurrogate.com. It was an interesting way of selling the core ethical dilemma in the film, but it was disappointing that we didn’t get any sort of panel or other information on the film. I haven’t looked deeply into the site yet, but it looks as if it will help you build a “perfected” version of yourself as a surrogate after uploading a photo.

Surrogates is currently set for a September 29, 2009 release, so they still have some time drum up excitement for this film. Currently it looks like it may be this year’s Babylon A.D., so I suspect it may be a tough sell.

It's a really interesting idea, and one that I would think about while watching Ghost in the Shell all the time. Hopefully it turns out good :)

    "this year’s Babylon A.D."
    That's harsh...
Bruce Willis and sci-fi is usually great so i'll have to wait and see with this one...
  • Will look rather sad alongside the (surprisingly similar in some respects, wildly different in others) Avatar.

This sounds like a rip off of a B movie Stephen Baldwin did called Xchange.
  • gah
If the studio had any sort of confidence in this, they would've been building it up since last summer.
  • Not always the case, but you do have a point.
  • Ah man it sounds like they are turning it into a mind less action movie, there wasn't much action in the graphic novel. Devindra did you get a look at Willis when he isn't a surrogate, is he fat/chubby like he is in the book?
  • Wow, this is the first I heard of this movie.
I was wondering what Bruce Willis was up to.
But I was to lazy to look at his IMDB page
  • Wow. That's a ashame. I was really rooting for Robert Venditti's work to be portrayed in a good light. I'll just hold my comics closer and wait for more info on this one. Maybe when they go to SD Comic-Con, they'll have an actual panel. Some guys save out for that convention if their movie is still a long shot out.

I've very forgiving when it comes to Bruce Willis films. His characters are always likable even if the films are not. This is one of the most negative reviews I've seen on /film, and without a trailer as backup I'm going to take it with a grain of salt.

hmm last time someone wrote that the gi joe trailer would have cheesy effects and will be disappointing. when the trailer came out, that was the most insane thing i've ever seen
  • What's the last good movie Bruce Willis was in? Sin City? The Sixth Sense?
  • gah
Seriously. The last Die Hard was the epitome of what's wrong with the modern action movie. It was almost like watching a good action parody....except they were taking themselves dead seriously.
  • Sin City was good, and I also really dug Hostage, but that was more due to the direction than Willis.
  • Don't forget about Ben "Crazy Pig" Foster! Personally, I like Mostow as a Director. To me, any shortcomings T3 had were from a screenplay that ended up negating the very core of what that franchise is about (fate/destiny/choice). Also, I feel that Die Hard 4 is good, but only in its unrated form on the DVD. I'm still interested in The Surrogates and I agree that Bruce Willis and sci-fi/detective films are always at least a decent combination.
  • He's not excessively fat or chubby, he just seems like a more tired and old Bruce Willis.
  • so basically he is playing John McClain? Ugh I like Willis but I just hope he doesn't play himself in the movie. Did you get a chance to see what his surrogate look liked?
  • I loved the graphic novel and was completely psyched when I heard it was being made into a movie with Willis to star. I was hoping with Willis involved it'd have a better chance of being a good and/or enjoyable film.

I hope that is the case....doesn't sound like a good first impression....

    god I hope this doesn't suck :(
  • im getting the feeling this film will be like Minority Report mixed with The 6th Day
  • Interesting concept deployed wrong
  • "This year's Babylon A.D." Ouch, strong words there Devindra as 'Babylon' was the epitome of terrible modern cinema (no direction, poor dialogue, short and abrupt narrative), but from your first impressions it sounds like another promising concept which has been completely misguided.

I'm surprised you knew they were Wilhemina models and not Ford or Elite. Good on ya.
  • that is a kinda strange idea. but it could work. this year's babylon a.d. is not a great comparison... kinda i Robot on acid i think....
