We normally try to stay away from the more gossipy stories, but this thing is already everywhere. TMZ got their hands on audio of Christian Bale going ballistic on the set of Terminator Salvation when Shane Hurlbut, the director of photography, walked onto a set while a scene was being filmed. Bale threatens to kick Hurlbut’s ass and trash his lights, before saying he won’t return to set until he is fired. You can listen to the audio on TMZ.com. Thansk to /Film reader Rai for the tip.

  • he shoulda barked it.... rofl batman
  • i think this proves he loves beatin up his mom too.
  • He didn't beat his mom, does no one read the news?
Verbal Abuse is a crime in England this is what he was arrested for not physically beating anyone.
  • He does sound crazy talking in a non Batman voice.
  • gfdgfdgfd
his batman voice was the worst part of the film, sounded ridiculous
  • Clever_Nickname
Would you have preferred that he spoke like Bruce Wanye in a mask? Or maybe a heavy Irish accent? Or maybe he could have channeled Pikachu...
  • Any voice that doesn't want me to punch babies would have been fine.
  • Yeee
The reason it was ridiculous was to mask his identity and throw off any suspicions or whatever, because the set of movies was supposed to be a more realistic rendition of batman instead of a universe where a simple pair of glasses is the difference between clark kent and superman. If it made you cringe and think of something other than "who is this guy", i guess it worked
  • bale'sbatvoice
    Swear to me!!
  • keehyon
    haha!!

as Henri Ducard (Neeson in BB) would say to Shane Hurlbut...

"You never learned to mind your surroundings!"
  • "You'll hunt me. You'll condemn me. Set the dogs on me. Because that's what needs to happen."
  • I guess we know why Nolan cut the "gag reel" from the TDK DVD. It would just be clips of Micheal Caine fluffing lines and going "I'm sorry Mr Bale, don't hit me!"
  • DarthCaedes
    LMAO!!!!
  • DerekAllan
the quality of this recording is fantastic!
  • I have to admit I was thinking the EXACT same thing.
  • the hick
haha its pretty much movie quality
  • haijak
Based on what he said, I would guess they were rolling the scene when the DP walked into Bales view and detracted him for the second time. Then he ripped the guy a new one. Clearly the audio was still rolling, I would love to see the film if that was rolling as well.
  • DVD Bonus Feature?
  • Nick
Threatening someone with physical violence? What' an unprofessional shit.
  • Heather
    seriously.
  • It's the guys fault for being unprofessional and agging Bale on. I agree though that he shouldn't have acted out in that manner and tone.
  • Perry
Well I guess when he's not hitting his mom, he's yelling at people who don't mean any harm.
  • danny
yeah he totally didn't hit his mom and sister and wife or whatever.
  • Justin
Except he didn't hit his mom and sister. He was arrested for VERBAL ABUSE not physical. He was arrested pretty much for what he did in that audio file.
  • Anonymous
You can get arrested for free speech?
  • he does come off as quite a hotheaded douche
  • You could tell that McG was scared of Bale. "Uh, I didn't see it"
  • the hick
i cant get over how big of a bitch McG was there
  • What's he going to do though, if he were to intervene, he could have been fired for messing with the "Star".
  • hahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah whata douch haha
  • whsmith
Sounds like Bale needed his diaper changed. No matter how bad the guy was, that's not how a professional deals with a situation. You take the guy aside, you take the director aside and handle it. Verbally abusing and threatening physical violence against a guy that makes less than 1/100 your salary and whose only job is to make you look good, is an extreme douchebag move. I'm glad this got released. Actors liked Bale need to be knocked down a few notches.
  • "whose only job is to make you look good"
You have such a wonderful understanding of the industry.
  • whsmith
Look, I understand you got Bale's signature on your Batman trading cards at Comic Con and now you have a personal bond with him and everything, so I won't question your obvious industry expertise and deep knowledge of actor and crew dynamics.
  • You sound silly.
  • edc
what? thats all you have to say?

    [ :) ]
  • I have a lot more to say. Read my comments below.
  • bgils15
Your such a saint. You have never gotten mad at your job about anything? This is his JOB. He takes it seriously. Someone walking on set during a shoot would piss me off to. And as for your comment about trading cards and sharing a bond with Bale. I not only share a bond but also an understanding of stupidity that when something likes this happens while the cameras are rolling and someone strolls on the set to change the light bulbs, it would have taken all of my strength not to harpoon him on sight. And after listening to the audio it seems this isn't the first time this guy has walked on set during a shoot.
  • Ryan T
Exactly. Even though the guy totally screwed up big time, Bale shouldn't have yelled at him for almost 4 minutes straight. That's just fucked up. I can't even think of a situation in my own life where I would barrage someone as badly as he did. Maybe if someone rammed into me with their car lol. Shit. It is still kind of funny though.
  • Chizzle
common though man, can you imagine being on set for 4, 5, sometimes 6 hours, waiting to do just a few lines while they get everything set up. Checking this, checking that. You start to say your lines, director yells "CUT!!!", we need to change this, add this to this over here, ok - now GO. You start to go, then some guy walks into your scene. You get aggravated, you're having a bad day, bad week, whatever. He leaves, you get set to go again, start saying you're lines. You're halfway through and then, BAM, the guy does it again?!. I'd be pissed too. I've done some films. (like stand in/low budget stuff), and it's crazy how long you actually stand around and just WAIT to be called to set. I'm not saying Christian Bale was right. But give him a little bit of a break.
  • I'm going to side with Bale on this one, there are certain things that are supposed to happen on a film set and the DP walking in front of a rolling camera isn't one of them... It also sounds like the DP has done it before, which truly is about as unprofessional thing to do on a movie set as there is.
  • whsmith
he didn't "walk in front of a rolling camera". from Bale's raging douche-rant it is clear that he merely walked past Bale's line of sight in the background, distracting him and taking him out of the scene
  • You don't walk around when the camera is rolling. You just do not do that on a set. Visit a set and take a look at what the people look like when the camera is rolling, dead silent and dead still. A person walking is a much larger distraction than you would think in that situation.
  • Lee
Give me a break. Bale was totally out of line. It's not a space shuttle launch, its just a fucking movie.
  • optimusprime
I have to agree with Lee. I understand being frustrated, but saying those words. Even threaten the guy. I am schocked by this to be honest.
  • Con
I understand the guy should not have been walking around. Bale is absolutely right. But to go on for that long? Talk about overkill. Any other place he would have been fired, or punched out. But he knows that none of that will happen, so he goes on and on and on. Come on, Bale. Get a grip.
  • optimusprime
That's exactly my point. As much as I love Bale, he took it a bit far.
  • BROOKLYN
    agreed. overkill.
  • zig
Agreed as well. But we don't know the context behind the scene. Terminator:S Seems like a very intense movie production wise. Definitely more physically intensive for Bale than it was for the DOP. In any case, as out of line as Bale was in handling the situation, that may have been... what... their 20th hour of shooting? Day 17? Take 15? The job can get to a man sometimes. It's just dumb luck the sound recording was still rolling.
  • dumb luck that the sound was recording?

I've read through the back and forth, and it seems that there is a consensus that the DOP acted like an imbecile. He was in the wrong, and his actions were inexcusable, but 4 minutes of belittling insults and threats of violence are equally unprofessional.

they're both numb-skulls, and i feel no pity for either party. I'm glad it was recorded- people should be accountable for their actions...and if Bale blows up, he should be 'accountable'
  • ZeroCorpse
It's just about as expensive as a Space Shuttle launch, the way movies are shot these days. If the actor is distracted, the film doesn't proceed, and if the filming doesn't proceed, then the ENTIRE CREW stands around waiting (and being paid) while they sort things out.

Bale may have been pushed too far by this guy, but it sounds like he had a right to be mad. You just DON'T wander in front of an actor around while an actor is performing. It's the same as a live play; You don't take flash photos and wander around out of your seat in the middle of it.

Think of it this way: You're trying to make a cheeseburger at YOUR job, and the cashier keeps coming over to the burger station, reaching in front of you to grab various things, making you lose your concentration, thus causing you to make the wrong burger for someone. Who gets in trouble for the bad burger? You or the cashier?

Or: A doctor is performing surgery on you. Do you want some orderly to keep distracting him by wandering through the operating room carrying loads of bedpans?
