Lionsgate to Buy Summit Entertainment?

Sharon Waxman is reporting that Summit Entertainment is in negotiations to merge with Lionsgate. According to the report, Lionsgate would pay Summit an amount worth nearly two years of operation costs, in exchange for the rights to Summit’s library of six films, a cable distribution deal through Showtime, and most importantly, the rights to the Twilight franchise. Right now both sides aren’t talking, but a merger deal has been in the works for a while now, at one point broke down, and are apparently back on again.

My first thoughts are that it would be a great move for Lionsgate, but I hope it doesn’t happen. It was nice to see a new production company in Hollywood, one with new ideas on how to do things. But the times are tight and I’m sure Summit will jump at the opportunity if the price is right.

  • Agreeing with you on this one, Peter. Summit has had a slightly different approach to things, particularly in international sales, and if Lionsgate gobbles them up, well... its Lionsgate.
  • Lionsgate pretty much is the new Miramax/Dimension Films.
  • gah
Except minus the quality. Miramax had a great track record.
  • more like the new New Line
  • I never realised how much the economy was affecting these big companies. Times are Tuff, true that...
  • Boogie
Editorial decision I know, but shouldn't the Lionsgate Image be first before the Summit Image? (Considering the title)
  • I thought that hollywood would be the last place to get affected by the recession! With all these big budgets going everywhere! But it seems i was wong
  • Lionsgate just might be getting a little too big.
  • why do you think? I'd say Summit's slate isnt too big for LG to handle.

I see this as something which might shake things up.
  • With times being what they are, alliances are going to be a commonplace thing, so we need to get used to it.
  • Not surprising considering the economic climate we are currently nestled within, but I've always acknowledged Lionsgate as a studio willing to try something different and if it keeps a section of a business afloat (kind of) then I see nothing wrong with it.
  • Let's hope Lionsgate will throw more blood and GORE in Twilight crap!!!!
  • What happened to the old economic philosophy about buying low, selling high? However, I do think that Lionsgate will be able to milk the Twilight franchise and extend its run much like the Harry Potter series.

I am willing to bet the author will sell out with prequels and spin-offs a little easier than Rowling and her precious Harry. Summit could be a bank for at least ten more years.
  • Look at Wikipedia's "List of films released by Summit Entertainment" I want to know what movies are in your guys opinion are the good, the bad and the ugly. After deciding that tell me why Lionsgate would like a piece of Summit’s revenue. These are the films I liked: Never Back Down, Penelope, Sex Drive, Twilight, Memento, City of Ember, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrel…2009 hopefuls…Push, New Moon, Knowing, The Brothers Bloom
  • Can someone tell me why this is a bad thing for reasons other than what Peter said?
