A couple weeks back it was reported that Emily Blunt had been cast in Marvel’s Iron Man 2. But it turns out that 20th Century Fox has an option on the actress from a deal that was made when she co-starred in The Devil Wears Prada that might prevent the Golden Globe winner from entering the Marvel Universe. Fox wants Blunt to star in Gulliver’s Travels, which is set to shot in the UK starting in Late March, while Iron Man 2 begins production this April in California.

However, Variety says that both Fox and Blunt’s reps were feeling optimistic on Thursday that both studios might somehow be able to accommodate Blunt’s dual shooting schedule. Blunt was supposed to play a former soviet spy named Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widdow. During the dueling trade stories, there was even a mention that the character would be Stark’s new assistant, but it was never made clear if that was just another inaccuracy in the reporting.

Blunt and Jason Segel are in talks to join Jack Black in Gulliver’s Travels, with Shark Tale director Rob Letterman taking up directorial duties. Written by Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman, the “contemporary re-imagining” will see a travel writer named Gulliver, who takes an assignment to visit the Bermuda Triangle, and somehow washes up on an island where he’s a giant compared to the tiny population. Blunt is set to play Black’s love interest, a princess of the island of Lilliput. Segel will play Horatio, Gulliver’s Lilliputian friend who helps him escape from trouble.

I’m much prefer to see her in Iron Man 2, and I’m sure I’m not alone. I understand that Fox has the legal option on Blunt, but after the whole Watchmen mess, I would think the studio would do whatever they can to try not to piss off the comic book/fanboy crowd.

  • I'd much prefer to see her in Iron Man 2 (as I;m sure would many). Let the Fox bashing continue, I guess...

    Werd!
  • Meh, I don't think she'd make a good black widow anyways.
  • How come everyone always focuses on Lilliput? Gulliver's Travels is so much more than the island of little people, and--honestly--the rest of book is much more interesting.

Anyway, I wasn't super enthused about Blunt playing black widow anyway, and if her shooting schedule interferes with a crappy Gulliver re-imagining, then, really, who cares?
  • Actually, I'd be kinda glad if she doesn't do it. Not to sound like a shallow jerk, but I really don't think she's attractive enough to be the Black Widow.

My personal choice would probably be some suitably Eastern European looker like Milla Jovovich.
  • I hope that she and her agent find a way to shoot both film without "killing" her by the amount of hour she will have to pull and the constant traveling.

I'm very eager to see both films, I hope this gets settle soon.

i been a fan of her since devil wears prada i hope to see her in iron man as well and screw FOX they just keep messin with everything
  • I hope this all gets worked out because I like the idea of Blunt playing Black Widdow.

What has this girl done? I seem to miss why shes so popular.
  • Just another casting mishap for Iron Man 2.

Next thing you know, the cast of Iron Man 2 will consist of the people in the following picture:

    MUWHAAHAHHAHA

    That was a funny one
  • Do both films!! im sure others have done it before
  • If they can work it out for her to be in both then great.
But I care more for IM2 than the other film.
  • Gulliver’s Travels, i love that film.. I didnt even know a new one was being made.
  • Palmer
God...Fox is going to fuck up Gulliver's Travels and probably inadvertently fuck up Iron Man?! What is going on! Though to be honest. I was never sure if Blunt could've pulled of being the Black Widow.
  • The new assistant? Sorry if I'm way behind but is Gwyneth Paltrow not coming back for the sequel??
  • filmkid
is it me but Iron Man 2 has been cursed with a voodoo spell everything bad been going on with this movie. first we was not sure Jon Favreau was coming back to direct, next was Terrence Howard been replaced with Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson not sure if his coming back, Mickey Rourke pay might be low damn maybe this movie rushed too soon.
  • Hey, have any of you read "The Ultimates"? It seems like most of the upcoming Marvel movies are based, in part, on the initial run series. (at least Iron Man II, Captain America, Thor)
  • dannyboy
these movie are based on the The Ultimates we already know that
  • This is a perfect example of how agent and publicist are trying to push their client into the role by creating false rumors.
The problem is when such rumors are basing themselves in people's minds, thus affecting the producers and director.
I am glad it didn't happen this time, I am sure that this Gulliver story is just an excuse. Because once the casting for Iron Man 2 will start, or started, no one is going to take her seriously. Blunt can't be Black Widow, she is not the type. Most annoying Olga Kurylenko is far better choice.
Blunt is not a star, and I doubt she'll ever be. Support roles and occasional lead in some indie is her future right now.
  • She really needS to be in Iron Man 2. But I'd like to see her in Gulliver's Travels as well.
  • I hope that she gets to be apart of the Marvel Universe. She is a really great actress and is a fine looking woman.
  • andy
she has the opportunity to sex it up in black skin tight suits but instead she chooses the adaptation of a "classic" REALLY
    REALLY?
