Plans for an Arrested Development film have been in motion for a while. However, according to Mitch Hurwitz, they’ve been flummoxed by actor Michael Cera, who has previously been mentioned as the lone holdout from the cast who wasn’t ready to commit. This position that was buttressed recently when Cera claimed that he was holding out for a script and that the movie was “more hypothetical than you think.

Now, The New York Daily News’s Gatecrasher is reporting that Jeffrey Tambor believes both that Cera is on board, and that the Arrested Development will happen this year. At a recent Upright Citizens Brigade LA performance of “Word Girl,” Tambor was quoted as saying the following:

If I have to call him up and say, ‘Get on set right now, young man,’ he’ll be there…The movie is going to happen this year, and Michael Cera is on board. Trust me.

A cryptic remark to be sure. Did he actually talk to Cera? Is Cera in fact on board, or does Tambor just have a monstrous amount of faith in his paternal taskmaster instincts? Has a script/story even been written yet? Tambor has been known to be wildly optimistic about this project in the past but he’s starting to get pretty bold with his proclamations, so I’m inclined to think that he’s either confident to the point of being willing to put his credibility on the line, or he just doen’t care about his credibility whatsoever. In any case, it seems like Arrested D fans actually have something to look forward soon, if Tambor is to be believed (which is a huge “if”).

  • I was happy, I was angry, and now I am numb to the thought of this movie. I don't want to watch a cast that doesn't want to be there.....(Cera).
  • Dr. Doc
tired of hearing about this, when it happens, then ill get excited
  • Agreed. There have been so many rumors about the on-again, off-again production, that it's a bunch of white noise at this point. Let me know when it starts shooting.
  • Dugg for the word "buttressed"
Oh wait. I'm not on Digg. Good news. Now lets all keep our fingers crossed.
  • Dude. Maeby.
  • Sure Maebe sucks but without her we never would have had the Inner Beauty Pageant.
  • Are you tripping or have you just forgotten?
Without Maeby there would be no Hollywood movie plot line. That stuff was hilarious, the whole "Mary me" line and Jeff Garlin, etc... She drove that mercedes around everywhere.
Without her the dynamic of the Tobias and Lindsay dynamic would not have been what it was. Their neglect for her and her rebellions were one of the highlights of the show. Without her, Tobias and Lindsay wouldn't make as much sense.
If anything she is the Bart Simpson of the show. She is the trouble maker of the show. She is integral.

  • Yes, the subplots that revolved around her were great. The actual character, however, was by far the weakest of all the regulars.

But hey, if you want to play the subplot card, I have one word that can summarize the greatness of the George-Michael character: Egg. I mean Ann.
  • That certainly is one.
  • Her?
  • GFSMMAN
    her?
  • i agree.. least interesting character in the whole show. Henry Winkler is more better on screen then her..
  • I love Cera and I'm glad he's playing mind games with the online community. I liked the fact that people got angry..i mean really angry. I laughed

But Muffin7, I agree: I really thought that Cera took off on his own after Arrested Development; this show was all about Tambor, Bateman, and Cross all the way.
  • Thrillhouse
Whoa! Sure, George Michael didn't have too many actual story lines that were interesting in themselves, but he was an invaluable character when it comes to bringing the funny. His reactions to his whacked out family are priceless.

    Plus, he almost had pop-pop!
  • I posed this is "if the series HAD to lose one character..."
I would love to see George Michael stay on, but if the series HAD to lose one character, who would you chose?
Maeby would be the next logical answer, but it really is a toss up between the two. I personally think that Maeby has better story lines and that she is an invaluable addition to Lindsay and Tobias' relationship. That's my opinion.
And thanks to the random asshole who gave me -1 point for stating my opinion. That's always much appreciated.

  • We will have to wait and see.
  • Kal
I mean seriously! GOD! He better not be having "pop-pop" in the attic with his girlfriend on the set.
  • Rob
I do agree that George Michael isn't a central character and not a deal breaker especially since it was found out that Maebe wasn't his biological cousin and she recipricated the the interest. Personally, I thought it went from awkwardly funny to a little creep. They are still cousins whether they are blood relatives or not.

I like Michael Cera, but he wouldn't be all that missed if the project moved forward without him. Assuming the movie is 2 hours long, how much screen time would he actually get anyway? Five to ten minutes?
  • I will never watch another Michael Cera anything ever again if he fucks up the making of this movie. That said, I like Cera a lot and think that George Michael is absolutely essential to the chemistry of the show. Controversial opinion here but I think the show could lose Buster before George Michael. Buster is absolutely hilarious but I think sometimes his arcs seem to be from a slightly different show. His missing hand, the army, etc. I love this show and I hope the movie is just somewhere close to as good.
  • johnny meatworth
pop pop gets a spinoff movie?
  • Maracle
i cant wait till next week when you guys run a story about M Cera saying that he definitely wont be in it.
  • Hmm. See, I got way more laughs out of Buster than George Michael. Different strokes, I guess.
  • Sitrom
I'm with muffin7 here. Maybe it's an age thing. Once you get over teenage angst you kinda forget what it was like. Grown up angst is a lot worse. Nobody understands you.
  • It would be incredulous if Cera didn't reprise his role. I feel like it would create such a divide amongst his fan base. I am currently a fan, I just hope that Tambor is right.
  • Matt
    Goddamnit.

You can't LOSE ANY CHARACTER PEOPLE.

It's not Arrested Development without all nine of them, sweet jesus. I can't believe any fan of this show would even discuss that.

Here's to hoping it happens though.
  • Tambor better not be messing around. I feel like pretty soon a bunch of AD fans are going to turn up on someone's doorstep with torches and pitchforks demanding an explanation. I may or may not be one of them.
  • Sitrom
    Yipeeeeeee!

    Doing a little dance now.
  • sanyo
Michael Cera was being all, "Salmon rolls!"
And now Jeffrey Tambor is like, "How many times do I have to tell this kid chicken wings?!"

Hope Tambor is right about this. If Cera's not in it I honestly can't see myself watching any future movies with him in them, even ones like The Year One.
  • Thats great. I'm glad this movie will finally get made. It's not enough to make up for prematurely canceling the show, but hey, that's what FOX does. FOX is where great shows die and mediocrity is praised.

If Cera doesn't do this, they should scrap the idea. I remember back when I wrote something on this movie, talking about Cera maybe not being in the film. Surprisingly, I got a lot of comments saying make the movie without Cera. But that would be wrong. He was a secondary character for sure, but it would be too hard to write him off. How would you explain his absence? His father wouldn't let him go off on some cruise ship by himself or something, he'd want to be right there with him. So it'd be hard to explain him not being in the movie.

I'm hoping Tambor is right about this!

"Doing the happy dance... doing the happy dance..."
  • No I agree Buster is funnier than George Michael. I just feel that without GM the whole feel of the show would be totally different.
  • George Michael is a beacon of sensibility even though he too suffers from bouts of ridiculousness from time to time (the cousins stuff..) but without him the house of cards would feel even more likely to fall.
  • Ant
they should just kill off Cera's character right in the beginning of the movie.
...a freak banana stand accident, or fell victim to one of Job's "illusions" gone wrong.
  • I think I'll put my faith in Tambor on this one, please don't let us down Jeffrey! Then again, you would have thought that the Banana Stand would have succumbed to the recent economic downturn (maybe that's a reason they will use if the film doesn't get made...)! :p
  • Wait, must read article first next time. Tambor is gonna threaten to beat that kid silly.
  • Palmer
This all wouldn't have happened if Fox weren't idiots and didn't cancel Arrested Development.
  • Palmer
This all wouldn't have happened if Fox weren't idiots and didn't cancel Arrested Development. Or maybe, they might have made a movie too.
  • the movie probably had been done a little faster that's for sure, but still AD movie this year? Perfect.
  • Very dumb idea for cancelling this how i agree. Anothe fuck up by FOX
  • David
What's wrong with all of you?! 1.) The whole cast HAS to come back to really make this work. 2.) EVERYONE in the cast was hilarious, and 3.) If one has to make a choice, GOB and Lucille are easily the funniest characters on the show.
  • byron
let's just have "George Michael Bluth Sr. THE MUSICAL" Starring Dr. Tobias "Analrapist" Fuenke as George Michael Bluth Sr.
  • been waiting...

    and hopefully this is it.

but its hard to beleive that a month ago, there was no script (which is why cera was holding out) and now there is...

    whatever

but if this really IS happening, THEN I'M ABOUT TO CREAM MY PANTS
  • Jfive
    Please let this be true!!!!!
  • You really don't even need Cera to make this happen. If everyone else gets tired of waiting, then I think it would be funnier to have a lot of different people (big stars, along with no-names) get the part, and all the rest of the family acting normal around them. And later in the movie, Tobias could have got his medical license back, but ditched it again for a supporting character in the movie stating that the hot-shot kid was supposed to get the part, but didn't want to play it, so Tobias got the part instead. Cera is not necessary, though he is preferred.
  • I get what you're saying, and it does sound funny. I would watch it, but if I had to choose between your idea and a straight up Arrested Development film, I'd take the later.

Maybe we could convince them to make both? One will go to the theater, the other will be direct to dvd. I don't think it matters which one is which.
  • Yeah, it would be good as a coiniciding film that is basically the same that would go straight to DVD. Maybe as a special feature on the DVD, like auditions for the part of George Michael. I'd also rather have a straight up AD Movie, but if everything doesn't work out, there are always alternatives that could be funny.
  • Analrapist
    Give me a GOB!

    .......GOB!!

No, I didn’t mean for you to yell my name at me.
  • What is with all this talk with Cera and Arrested devolopemnt???
  • august
This show was awesome. Cera don't be a punk and deprive people. Arrested Development had a lot to do with where you are now...
