Mickey Rourke Will Not Appear At WrestleMania

Lets recap: At the SAG Awards, Mickey Rourke said that he would be appearing at WrestleMania 25, and even challenged WWE wrestler Chris Jericho to be ready for him. Last night, Jericho appeared on Larry King Live with Rourke, and turned up the fake hostility in what appeared to be a prelude to the Pay-Per-View event.

Many industry analysts expressed their concern that Rourke’s pro wrestling appearance might affect his Oscar chances (which is funny in itself considering Rourke was nominated for playing a professional wrestler but appearing at a professional wrestling event is somehow considered unfavorable). And now it seems like someone must have had second thoughts because now Rourke’s publicist tells Defamer that Rourke “will not be participating in Wrestle-Mania” and will instead be “focusing entirely on his acting career.” Seems like a smart move to me. Besides, WWE head Vince McMahon wanted nothing to do with Mickey Rourke and The Wrestler until Rourke won a Golden Globe.

I'm pretty sure, the WWE is going to use this as an angle and it's all just a ploy to set up a match at Wrestlemania.
  • It sure is! Did you watch that interview? Why would chris jeriko insult mickey rourke out of character? Its all a big set up and i reckon they will "fight" not wrestle
  • Well, if this IS the case then it seems like a missed opportunity for some great advertising for his movie. The Wrestler will be opening in more theaters through the first 2 weeks of February, so it would be good if they could convince the WWE crowd to see it.

It could all be just mis-information. I'd bet it is. But either way, we ARE talking about Roarke and his film.

i know for a fact Vince McMahon hated the wrestler basically because it hit too close to home and Vince and wwe have tried hard to get away from the steroid pill popping perception

See now I heard that Vince hated the movie and I believe WWE.com even issued a statement stating even though the film was well done it didn't depict the WWE in anyway. Now I understand why the WWE would want to have Rourke at Mania, they always have some celebrity at the event each year now to try and help boost buy-rates. Also Vince is known for trying to make a buck any way possible. Now I personally would not mind seeing Rourke do something more with the wrestling business however, I feel as though he should try and do something more with Ring of Honor.

It makes more sense seeing as how the big match in the movie took place at a Ring of Honor show. Being a big fan of the wrestling business and the movie as well it would not bother me is Rourke's change of heart is true. I'd say win the Oscar then show up at an RoH show. The way it should happen.
  • well, there you go.
  • Yup.

"Vince McMahon wanted nothing to do with Mickey Rourke and The Wrestler until Rourke won a Golden Globe. "

    definitely sounds like Vince
  • i dont know I highly doubt he's going to do it..they should advertise the wrestler with WWE kinda takes away IMO

Like Vince McMahon would pass up a golden opportunity like this im calling shenanigans!!
  • WrestleMania isn't until April. There are several weeks worth of hype-building available AFTER the Oscars take place. Rourke can have his cake (avoiding WWE until the Oscars are over) and eat it too (still do WM25 after he loses to Sean Penn anyways).

you know i have a feeling, mickey rourke will show up as randy "the ram" robinson instead
  • Crispus
    but he's dead
  • I am glad to hear it!
  • All I can say is thank you Jebus.
  • I bet after the Oscars are over we might get a different story especially if Mickey loses. I hope he doesn't but it's possible.
  • Yeah i feel that him being in WrestleMania will affect his film work.. He should just play it safe and stick to finding the next big project.
  • You said Vince McMahon wanted nothing to do with Rourke, well according to Darren Aronofsky interview with NPR Vince loved the movie. And any wrestling fan knows the Vincent Kennedy McMahon NEVER shy's away from free publicity and would love to have Rourke as apart of his biggest PPV of the year.

Also in the wrestling world it isn't uncommon for someone to announce something publicly while doing the exact opposite. Just a year ago Rourke's potential opponent Chris Jericho swore up and down in interview after interview that he would never return to wrestling after he left the business for 3 years to pursue an acting carrier, meanwhile he was in the process of signing a brand new WWE contract. So no offense to the Defamer but I'm gonna need a little more then just a quote from a publicist. Vince McMahon and the WWE wouldn't go through the trouble of having Jericho mention Rourke's comments about him on there weekly programing and setting up that Larry King interview without having some kind of pay off.

Couple of things: it was reported by Aronofsky's camp that McMahon had a very unfavourable reaction to the movie when given a private screening. It's only because of the publicity that he's turned about face.

Also, Jericho pursued a career in music, which, for all intents and purposes, is actually rather successful; his heavy metal band, Fozzy, has toured extensively and sold a lot of albums.

But you're right - a quote from a publicist isn't really enough, and even if it was, there's nothing to say Vince won't try and up his offer to change Rourke's mind. Who knows? This latest bit may even be just a part of the storyline - Rourke's reluctant to take part, and Jericho will eventually goad him into it.

This my boys and girls is what they call a work, and a very good one I might and. Rourke will be there but he'll be the Ram so in a way the AP report is true. Vince has big pockets so we'll see him there.
  • Rourke is probably about ready to move on to the next project.
  • Lono
Smart move Mick. You've been a joke once, don't go down that road again man.
  • Clever_Nickname
    A joke?

So going from one scripted industry to another is embarassing?

It's all entertainment and you'd do well to remember that.

All though it might be hard for you to hear me, what with you being on that high horse and all.
  • Lono
I guess some folks are just more easily entertained than others.

    Hi-yo Silver, awaaaaaay....
  • It seems very misguided and Kaufmanesque. It was weird then and it's weird now.
  • thanks for this, its sooo much faster now
