The Green Hornet. Well, well, well. What a bumpy ride this one’s been getting in the press and on blogs.

First of all there was a loud shout of skepticism about the casting of Seth Rogen, then euphoria at the signing of Stephen Chow, then Chow puled out of directing and rumours abound that he’s bailing entirely, then the film is reported to be on the chopping block… and now, well, some pretty compelling evidence that it isn’t. Not at all.

Seth Rogen himself has sent a very clear and direct e-mail to Drew McWeeny, originator of the recent “Green Hornet, Red Light” rumours. In Rogen’s riposte, which you can read over at HitFix, he declares that ”assuming we’re able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibility, it should still hit the release date.”

Good luck to them. Rogen’s a smart one and I’m going to be very interested in anything he takes on these days.

In the meantime, I read at the LA Times that Adam Sandler will be taking on “a brief but key role in the movie as a certain surprise superhero”. There have been so many iterations of the Green Hornet, on the big and small screens, the radio, comics and pulp novels, that I probably only have a handle on something like 25% of the complete canon and don’t have any idea at all who this surprise character might be. I’d have assumed The Lone Ranger had that character not be up and running in a project of his own over at Disney.

Maybe it’ll be the Zohan.  Ahem.

We’re left assuming Stephen Chow will still play Kato, but I’d expect this might possibly depend somewhat on scheduling now. Chow’s definitely keeping busy, though, and is in development on another Chinese film, and one that’s very close to his heart.

MonkeyPeaches reported last week that a Chow directed version of Journey to the West is on the cards. Tin Kai-Man, one of Chow’s regular co-stars and a key colleague in his Star Overseas company, has apparently taken a trip to Sichuan Province where he has, amongst other things, been location scouting for Journey.

If you, like me, grew up watching the Monkey TV show, or you’ve been following the recent Olympic and operatic endeavors of Gorillaz, you’ll know the basic deal with Journey to the West: the Tang Monk, best known to me as Tripitaka, and his disciples, Monkey, Piggy/Pigsy and Sandy undertake a pilgrimage to India in order to retrieve holy scriptures. En route, Monkey misbehaves, martial arts are practiced and Buddhist lessons learned.

Here’s the obligatory Gilliam reference: Gorillaz were negotiating with him to direct a movie of their Journey to the West opera, but this appears to have fallen through.

  • Oh my god. First Seth Rogen, now Adam Sandler? This is a diarrhea shitfest!
  • Yup, looks like it.
  • Rogen was the only thing that interested me to this! But now sandler....
  • REAL6
Thanks for fucking ruining this you fat ass talentless hack!!!

    Seth Rogain, bwhahahahahahahaha
  • Go back to 4chan.
  • REAL6
Don't be mad at the truth. 4Chan? Yeah ok, you seem to know all about it.
  • I'm so over this Green Hornet news. Who cares? It sounds like a crap movie.
  • Dr. Doc
thank god this flick is gonna be made! Seth Rogen is awesome and is gonna do a great job. hes lost the weight for it which shows his dedication

Rogen is gonna prove all the naysyaers wrong! cant wait to see this. i wonder who the director will be? im so excited for more news about this flick!

i wonder who Sandler will be? my guess also would have been a cameo as The Lone Ranger, but w/ Disney doing that, i dont know
  • Turkleton
anyone think Sam Raimi directing this would be a good idea? he was attached to the Shadow years ago and is attached to produce it now

Sam Raimi directing. just a thought
  • I'm sure that would be fun, but I don't really see Raimi wanting to do this one. Plus his schedule might be a bit busy with the premiere of his new horror flick coming up and his involvement in another Spider Man flick.
But, yes, Raimi would be a good choice for this. He would be a good choice for a lot of movies, he's a solid director.
  • Is that Journey to the West movie related to "MONKEY - Journey To the West" Opera that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett put together? That's so awesome. I've been waiting for it to hit state side but if a movie comes out, then it should be here soon! Count me in for that.
  • gah
Im really trying to figure out who Sandler could possibly be. It'd have to be someone Sony owns the rights to.
  • Spider-Man! Ghost Rider!
  • gah
Marvel still has some say and would never allow that.
  • I wasn't being serious.
  • I really think that if David Gordon Green isn't busy, he can most certainly to this.

And I really think if they're going to make it into a comedy/action/adventure superhero flick, then follow the Ghostbusters formula; Ghostbusters is probably one of the few mixed genre movies that work very well to this very day!
  • I kind of feel like this is going to be the next Mystery Men.
  • It's kinda hard to say if it's going to be the next Mystery Men. I'm a firm believer of learning from other's mistakes, so after years misses (Mystery Men, Fantastic Four, X3) and hits (Nolan's Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man) you can avoid the pitfalls of others.
  • Thank you for the Gilliam note. You're the man :p
  • filmkid
so Stephen Chow going to do the Journey to the West aint it funny that his going to do a movie about Monkey King also known as Sun Wukong, and his also the producer of Dragonball Evolution and everyone knows Dragonball is inspired by Journey to the West.

So i guess Justin Chatwin is going to play Monkey King in Journey to the West too. his playing Son Goku in dragonball might aswell let him play Sun Wukong too LOL

I am officially all Seth Rogened out. I was underwhelmed by Pineapple Express after everyone saying how it was the greatest stoner movie of all time. Liked Knocked Up, but wasn't in love with it. Loved Superbad, but it wasn't for his acting but his writing.

At least guys like Will Ferrell and Jim Carey were geniunely funny for at least a half dozen films before their act got tiresome. He is more like Sandler who hit it out the park in his first couple of movies and has been coasting ever since.

It is a sad state of comedy when some of the top comedy stars are Rogen, Sandler, and Kevin James.
  • I disagree that you're putting Rogen into the same group as Sandler and James(though I don't hate any of them) ; at least Rogen has writing talent and he's been in well liked movies. Sandler, on the other hand, has been up and down with his films, esp now in his career. Hopefully, 'Funny People' can change that.

You have to remember Rogen is very young guy, so give him time.
  • Rob
Sandler is a writer too. He wrote or co-wrote Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, Little Nicky, Eight Crazy Nights, and Don't Mess with the Zohan. You can argue that Sandler started out strong with Gilmore, Madison, The Waterboy, and even Big Daddy. So my comparisions between Sandler and Rogen are pretty accurate. I think Sandler was in his mid-20s when he did Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. I would put at least Happy Gilmore up against anything Rogen has done.

It is a trend with comedic actors. They start strong and fade. Look at Eddie Murphy. In the 80s, he couldn't do wrong. When was the last time you have actually walked out of an Eddie Murphy movie and thought it was good. When was the last time you walked out of an Eddie Murphy movie.
  • I mean you're right. Speaking of Eddie Murphy, there's also Steve Martin.

However, I would like to think Bill Murray at least tries not to fall into that category, I applaud him for that.
  • I'm pretty sure keeping up with this movie will prove to be far more entertaining than actually watching it.

And if you think we're in a sad state of the comedy genre, there will be no happy state for you. Ever.
  • Yeah, I think there's more hits than misses with comedies these days. If you want to see a sad state, then look at the horror genre. And to a lesser degree, sci-fi. I hope that Star Trek and indie flick Moon do well. Children of Men is like the only good sci-fi to come out in the past 3 years. (unless I'm forgeting something)
  • This movie is a roller coaster and I'm not sure I'm even interested in it anymore. I like Rogan and think he's a talented guy, and I've never been convinced he'd be a good Green Hornet, but I would love for him to prove me wrong.
  • This movie is a roller coaster and I'm not sure I'm even interested in it anymore. I like Rogan and think he's a talented guy, still I've never been convinced he'd be a good Green Hornet, but I would love for him to prove me wrong.
  • actually, I would rather see James Franco as the Green Hornet.
  • Franco would make a great GH!!!

I'm not gonna knock anyone who disagrees with me on this, but I can't stand Seth Rogen. I think he has no talent. His movies are good only because of the people surrounding him in them. Superbad had Cera and Hill, Knocked up had Heigl and Rudd, and 40 yr old virgin had Steve freaking Carrell. I'm so glad Rogen is losing his chance to RUIN the GH!
  • I'm not going to get into the 'Rogen' debate again; anyway, he's also the co-writer and producer of Green Hornet so he's not leaving the project anytime soon.

However, I do think that Franco is already in shape and has proven to be a good actor, whereas Rogen is currently going (what seems to be) a transitional period in his career (he might get more experimental from this point on).
  • i had such high hopes.
  • Adam Sandler? Why is that guy still getting work. That talking from the corner of his mouth got old after his second movie.
  • Sandler will most likely play Scuba Steve, you know, that one guy from Big Daddy?
  • wow this film is totally heading for an epic fail
  • My hopes are fading away with every Green Hornet news bit.. Damm this could have been a great flick...
  • I know the cynic in wants to agree but the movie hasn't even started production yet, so it can be a great flick still. I know that Sandler bit isn't the best of news, but it doesn't mean it's going to be a Zohan disaster.

Hi Brendon, thanks for the tip about CHOW's Journey to the West, I immediately checked out related Chinese news, the bad one is the Taiwanese investor has backed out due to CHOW's insisting to only play the Tripitaka instead of the Monkey King (whom he played in his most influencial movie so far "A Chinese Odyssey"); the good one is CHOW is so into this project, he is willing to fund this movie all by himself, and it will probably get started by the end of year 2009 or early 2010,

My obligatory Gilliam reference: A Chinese Odyssey is CHOW's take to Journey to the West just like Monty Python's take on the tale of Holy Grail.

BTW: What's the MONKEY TV show you are growing with? the Chinese TV serie?? very curious
  • Connelly, where's that rumor kill page for this???
  • Why?
As long as Rogen insists on making this film a comedy it will be a disaster. Its plain and simple that is why there is no interest in this film from the general public.
