Star Wars Goes Horror with Deathtroopers

I’ve never even considered the idea of a horror story set in the Star Wars universe, never-mind think that someone would actually create one. No, I’m not talking about an independently made fan film, LucasFilm and Del Rey Books will be publishing a Star Wars horror novel on October 27th 2009 titled DeathTroopers.

No Windows No Doors and Chasing the Dead author Joe Schreiber will be taking this first step into uncharted territory by penning the first horror novel in the Star Wars expanded universe.  No real story details have been revealed, but the cover art for the book which has been unleashed on StarWars.com is actually pretty cool. Check out the full cover and some inspirational details after the jump.

Joe wrote on his blog that he’s “ tried to make it into exactly the kind of book you’d want to read if you were a child of the 70s who grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy and really digs horror in the vein of The Shining and Alien, with a little dose of William Gibson mixed in.”

  • That poor, dead Jango Fett clone...
  • Palmer
It seems that everyone in the Star Wars universe is hating on the Fett clan.
  • Reed
I don't know much about the Star Wars universe, but it's revealed in Battlefront two that the Storm troopers were not all clones of Jango Fett. The empire decided that having a homogenous army was too dangerous.
I wished that were revealed in some other way more mainstream, because I was furious when I thought all the storm troopers were clones, and was relieved to get this piece of info.
  • KwaiLo
at the end of the new Karen Traviss novel, Order 66 is it made clear that the new clones are clones of clones, and it hints at other genetic material being used as well.
  • BROOKLYN
    oh man. heck yeah!
  • That poster looks awesome...
  • A decent film version of this concept would greatly make up for the prequels.
  • agreed! Make it make it!!
  • starscream9289
Damn, I got distracted by the little ringtone ad in-between the jump =3

Anyways, this sounds cool. Stormtroopers eating Jedis....or vice versa. This is gonna be bloody wicked.
  • The cover looks so freaking poor it's unbelievable.
  • inbetweeny
    zuh?
  • Mesa tjink dis here book looks okeyday!
  • Mesa think dis here book looks okeyday!
  • Seth
LOL, does Jar Jar get murdered in this?

Or does he finally lose it and start hacking stormtroopers to pieces and is revealed as a psycho killer?
  • Now THAT is one I'd like to see. Especially the part where Jar Jar dies. Horribly. Never to be seen or heard from again. Ever.

Course, this new book could be about a perfectly normal human being who justifiably goes around slaughtering anyone using the word 'metachlorians'.
  • hahahah Deathtroopers vs Jar Jar. Blood and all. count me in ill def see that
  • I feel like I would much rather watch a fan film with zombies versus Jedi, but this might turn out okay.
  • Zombies vs. Jedi! Brilliant. Now I want to see that movie.
  • Could go either way this... as long as it takes place in the right setting and doesnt include anything at all to do with Luke or Han Solo or Leia then it could actually be ok...

I think whether the book is good or not is irrelevant to somebody picking this idea up and convincing The Frog (Lucas) to run with it. Who knows!
  • That cover is freakin sweet! I might pick this up
  • NOW i've seen it all. actually, no, probably not i wanna see star wars noir
  • This would have been better as an animated film and not a book.
  • Seth
This is the WEIRDEST genre melding I have ever seen.

Maybe next they should do a kind of Jane Austen period piece.
  • Whenever somebody compares their own stories to The Shining and Alien, it's time to start worrying.
  • Empatojayos
So what's after Star Wars horror??

A book about a Gay cantina?? I bet uncle Ziro and Jar Jar will be present....
  • Well... the prequels were kind of a horror story...
  • sitrom
hear hear. seriously why won't this star wars stuff just die..please just die.
  • I heard that it's really not a "horror" novel. It's really about a group of Stormtroopers on a Star Destroyer with a monster.
  • that would be more interesting and more akin to the star wars universe than a "horror" novel, which sounds reaally stupid.
  • Bob
What's next? Star Wars romance novels?
  • emeryisthebestband
no way there is too much romance in star wars as it is. How about....a book about a storm trooper that learns how to use the force by accident and learns of his own fate by foreseeing the future because of his new powers, but does not know how he is going to prevent it so he starts to write a journal everyday of him living his life out before his death so he can try to figure out how he is to avoid death by trying to clue together when, where and how he will die. Sorta like the Diary of Jengo Frank. im bored this is boring....
  • Reed
This is... interesting... I don't see it working all that well. While I think a suspense, serial killer mystery might play out, a horror story seems out of place. And this cover looks like Saw Meets Star Wars... Did they ever show chains in Star Wars? I can't think of a time. It looks too primitive.
  • i agree very sawish what did leia strangle jabada hut with? was it a chain i cant remember
  • savaga
Leia did in fact strangle Jabba with a chain while it was still attached to a collar around her neck. The entire scenario is, of course, my definition of awesome
  • yeah thought so, gold.....bikini.. chain... collar.. strangle sweeeet
  • Anti-Septic
Zombies vs. Jedi, I have to admit that sounds very intriguing. Damn, I hated the prequels except the first one was at least tolerable since Hayden Christiansen was not in that one and it had Liam Neeson, it was at least tolerable.

This could renew my faith in Jedi Films.
  • wasnt there a video of the day with the ewoks now thats horror short film or something i liked that this cover though just makes me think of saw
  • Noah Maher
Maybe this will explain the Imperial Garbage Monster from New Hope.
  • The C
Horror Story? How about legions upon legions of fans being tremendously let down by every single thing Lucas has done since Return of the Jedi. I grew up loving the original trilogy, they were defining films of most people's childhood/young adulthood. When we found out finally the first three episodes were gonna be made, i almost shat my pants i was so excited. Then that excitement turned into nothing but a catastrophic let down. Lets face facts here, episode 1, 2, and 3 were flat out terrible movies. The animated films suck. The remakes of the original trilogy are a travesty, i still watch my original VHS copies. Lucas was once a genius, these days he's a flat out hack.
  • I like the prequels, most of the people who liked the original trilogy expected something similar, less political. But the actions scenes were awesome.
I much rather have those films than nothing at all.

Though I agree with you, on the animated film, I still have nightmares thinking of that.
  • :O

    Oh God, yes.
  • cool avatar, is that from the good the bad and the ugly?
  • Garrett Moffitt
Which would be a great remake in the SW univers, BTW..as would any of the Zotoichi or Yojimbo movies.
  • Something tells me this will be awesome. Hooray for hopefully reinventing the Star Wars franchise! (AND MAKING IT GOOD THIS TIME!)
  • Star Wars with blood, ok, so like Coheed and Cambria? =/ Whatever.
  • freemachine
Does Lucas realize what a parody Star Wars has become, and that everybody is laughing at him?
  • tkissane
the poster looks wicked ,its a stormtrooper helmet with the head still in it like it was ripped off because you can see pecies of flesh at the bottom
  • noob
they had blood in epsiode 4 when obi wan cut that guy's arm off in the cantina.
