Here’s a serious case of believe it when you see it (and bear in mind, the Grindhouse Blu-Rays need marketing right about now).

According to “rumblings around town”, given a public voice by Bloody Disgusting, the Weinsteins are putting some serious welly behind Robert Rodriguez’ Machete. Originally showcased as a faux trailer from the double bill version of Grindhouse, and then a high point of the Planet Terror DVD, Machete would be expanded to feature length from the 30 minutes worth already in existence.

In fact, it might be expanded far beyond feature length. Try three features’ length…

A slightly newer report than the Bloody Disgusting one can be read on the French site Tout Le Cine.

Or, to put that another way, “Danny Trejo has announced that the Weinstein brothers are intending to quickly, and with the collaboration of Robert Rodriguez, make a real Machete movie. Or, rather, a trilogy of them, intended to go direct to DVD.”

No source has been named but the site is a very reputable one, and has often been the first place I’ve heard of something slightly unlikely that later turned out to be true.

So, my guess is that Trejo has been speaking out again, and reiterating what he was telling us last spring. Only time will tell if he’s going to be proven right this time, but I’m certainly not buying into it yet. I’d like to be wrong, though, and it isn’t impossible that the Weinsteins are looking for some cheap and cheerful straight-to-disc affairs - particularly ones like this, with built in audiences and already popular trailers - at this time of financial fearfulness.

  • oh man. i've been hearing this for 2 years now. i'll believe it when i see it. 3 machete movies may be overkill though.
  • I'd rather see Thanksgiving made into a real movie. Would Machete really do anything that Black Dynamite isn't gonna do already.
  • I'd rather see Thanksgiving made into a real movie. Would Machete really do anything that Black Dynamite isn't .
  • gah
MEXploitation should be a new genre.
  • YES! i loved the "thanksgiving" trailer.
  • I remeber hearing about this movie before Grindhouse even came out. At one point it even had it's own Wikipedia page.
  • DANNY TEJO F YEAR
  • I'd rather they made one juicy movie instead of spreading it thin over three.
  • gah
Jesus CHRIST!! Look, I love RobRod and Grindhouse, but are the Weinsteins retarded? Honestly, how did Grindhouse work out again at the box office? Oh yeah, a complete failure like everything the Weinstein has put out. They couldn't even make a dime on a Seth Rogen comedy. Seriousy, how is the Weinstein company still around? Their filmography is embarrasing stacked against their Miramax one, and they haven't had one hit yet.
  • If Zack and Miri had come out in April it would have done close to $100M. Releasing it on Halloween was fucking retarded.
  • Considering that they based the entire TV marketing around a terribly unfunny poop joke, I doubt Z&M would have made $100M. Granted, it still would have done better than the final numbers that it got.
  • Klaus Kinski
I'd like them to release Grindhouse on DVD/Blu-Ray before doing this.

O MY GOD, maybe there is a GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    IN TREJO WE TRUST!!!
  • I might be one of the few more interested in Barbarella and Machete rather than Sin City 2....after the disastrous Spirit I'm not sure I can trust a script written by Miller...I'm not saying his comics aren't fantastic Hollywood is just going to his head....I figured Barbarella would come out first....three Machete films sounds interesting...
  • pish posh

... been hearing this for a while
and I've wasted some time believing this to be true, but so far, NOTHING has happened. i used to care... i USED to care that machete (& machete kills, machete kills again) was going to happen.

but i don't anymore. just finish putting GRINDHOUSE on dvd. Japan has already done it, how is it so hard to do it here?
  • This needs to happen but it sounds like Grindhouse DVD hype.
  • grind house blu ray hype;-)
  • I think I might prefer Edgar Wright's "DON'T" being made into a film. You know, a 70's European horror film.
But not a remake of Suspiria - that would be a horrible idea...wait...
    Oh, damn.
  • I'm still waiting to see Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair...
    ... Anyone?
  • ....been waiting since 2003
  • andrew aiello
QT just recently explained that he had Production IG finish 7 more minutes of animation for the o-ren chapter to be inserted in the DVD release. he said that's done so hopefully soon.

You bet, I still think as a single film it's the defining work of Quintin's career
  • I agree with this. I don't think I know of a more emotional rollercoaster that calls for the questioning of morals and principles while managing to be both artistic, entertaining, and cool. Kill Bill is like our Cowboy Bebop but with a bit more substance in my opinion.
  • I see where you're coming from, and I'd almost agree if QT wasn't responsible for probably one of the most important films of the 90's: Pulp Fiction. That shit turned an industry on its head. It's QTs defining film. Kill Bill wasn't defining for his career... it was just f*cking awesome!
  • Going to have to disagree. Pulp Fiction was defining for the 1990s and Tarantino-esque movies but its Kill Bill where we saw his passion and artistry truly show. It's an amazing 'genre pic' that takes the best of samurai films and spaghetti westerns and weaves them into an inspiring tale of love, vengeance, and triumph. On the surface it might look like Tarantino's masturbating to his favorite childhood films but there's so much more depth to be found in Kill Bill than Pulp Fiction will ever have. Pulp Fiction was amazing and may be considered the most important film for the 90s, but Kill Bill was easily the most important film for Quentin Tarantino. Easily.
  • "but Kill Bill was easily the most important film for Quentin Tarantino." I see what you're saying, but I'm saying that without Pulp Fiction, there would be no Kill Bill... thus heightening its importance. Perhaps 'important' is the wrong word here?
  • Maybe you mean to say successful? Kill Bill was being discussed during the production of Pulp Fiction, so I don't think that's really the case either... Without Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill might not have been so generously financed is probably what you're going for - or at least most accurate.
  • yeah read that a while ago on tarantino.info and freaked the fuck out...

i dont know man this is looking good, but i dont want to get all excited and be let down because of the strange dealings with weinstein / miramax.. stufff...

but im still holdin' out for my man QT!!!!!
    cant get enough
  • i'd rather have the complete Grindhouse or Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. this would still be awesome though.
  • I think the French article is referencing the same interview as /film did last March. It's almost identical word-for-word!
  • Good catch.
  • one machete movie will be overkill.
  • its going straight to dvd...yep its overkill
  • Visionary
I think the Grindhouse Brandname should be a new establishment of sorts, open to any director, A-list or otherwise, as a niche market 'release valve' for experimental work that the major companies like Paramount and Universal would never let them get away with. I think the Wiensteins would clean up.
  • Visionary
Sort of what Dimention already does with it's Dimention Extreme line, but with directors who typically do other stuff.
  • C'mon guys... Grindhouse wasn't all bad. While I do not think it was Mr. Tarantino or Mr. Rodriguez's best films, they were purposely cheesy... THat was the point. And the trailers were awesome. This is a best possible case scenario... No box office release, no box office disappointment.. Then we won't have to worry about how it will affect the studio. As far as the DVD sets for Kill Bill and Grindhouse, blame yourselves. The studios have all the material needed to make a great editon of a dvd, but since they know that we will buy a watered down version, then buy a special edition, then also re-buy a definitive edtion, they constantly fuck us. I dont mind a re-release with the inclusion of more materials, but usually its all the same stuff with a slight new twist.. so right now they are milking the seperate sales on those flicks... Personally, I don't think they will ever come out... But one can hope.
  • i've been waiting that project for more than a year now.... but straight-to-dvd? that's just meh.
  • "Or, rather, a trilogy of them, intended to go direct to DVD.”

Is this not the most alarming part of the post?
  • indeed.
  • jrice73
I think they already tried this at another studio. It was called HELL RIDE and it was bloody awful...
  • Visionary
    I liked Hell Ride.
  • Any chance to get more Robert Rodriguez into my life, I'm down with.

And the "direct to DVD" aspect isn't alarming because Grindhouse didn't perform at the box office but has done well on DVD (and obviously, all straight-to-DVD movies are more surefire money makers).

I'd love to see them in theaters but the future is online and DVD, especially for niche movies (which Grindhouse seemingly was).
  • do the direct-to-dvd's have similar size budgets? grindhouse cost approximately $53 million.

but then again, there's el mariachi.
  • I WANT TO SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN...( Crosses his arms and pouts).. And what about the Grindhouse BLU-RAYS? that was very vague Peter! and I'm to lazy to go look to Amazon to see if your crazy or do you got the inside track?
  • How on earth did RR convince the Weinsteins to spend money on 30 minutes of material that was planned to be cut down to a 3 minute trailer from the start? No wonder they're having money problems.
  • RR doesn't have to convince anyone because he shoots "fast, cheap, and always in control" (see Once Upon a Time In Mexico DVD special features). The guy is like kissing cousins with Steven Soderbergh--they can both shoot about five movies with the time and money it takes the average director to shoot one.
  • Then why did the budget for Grindhouse balloon out of control? It sure wasn't QT's fault.
  • terrance
because Actors need to get paid, and there was alot of name actors
  • such an amazing idea.. i really hope that Grindhouse gets some kinda special edition
  • Goodbye to Astro Boy, hello to Machete...
