So, the Tintin casting is out of the bag, as per the headline… and you simply won’t believe who wrote the screenplay: Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Wow. That’s amazing. For the first time since I was born, I’m really excited to see a film by Steven Spielberg. The author of the best ever Dr. Who, the best ever Shaun of the Dead and some quite good things where toys, like, reenact famous films, all of them collaborating on a film adaptation of a supposed Nazi sympathizer’s comic book. That doesn’t come along every day.

Wright is currently in Toronto prepping Scott Pilgrim, but he has written at least one other screenplay with Cornish - an adaptation of Marvel’s Ant Man comics.

Below the break, more new casting details including at least one big, big star.

It has been confirmed that this film will be based upon The Secret of the Unicorn as it’s called Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, but it seemingly also contains plot from Red Rackham’s Treasure.  These are the eleventh and twelfth books in the full series but also the first two parts of a four book cycle that continued with The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun. The second film is scheduled to be directed by Peter Jackson - now that’s so exciting I could faint - and a third film… well, no director was ever posited for the third. Could they be thinking Edgar will do it? Could they? Wake me up so I can pass out again like the big silly fanboy y’all wish I was.

So, here are the actors and, where I know or can guees, the comic strip characters they’ll be playing.  All actors are confirmed, but some of the roles are not.

As Tintin, Jamie Bell.

As Captain Haddock, Andy Serkis.

As the Thom(p)son Twins, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

As Red Rackham, Daniel Craig. That’s the big, big star.

As someone I can’t even hazard a guess at, Gad Elmaleh.

As Cuthbert Calculus (uncomfirmed role, but really), Toby Jones.

As someone I can’t hazard a guess at, Mackenzie Crook

Production started today. The film is to be performance captured and released stereo-optically in 2011 - a long wait, but at least there will be plenty of 3D screens ready to go by then.  The next update I want on this one is that Jackson is picking up on Spielberg’s last day to get film number two in the bag straight away.  Here’s hoping.

  • What's your source? Obvious if it's secret that's one thing, but at least say that...where is this information coming from? I'd like to know.
  • Press release from the studio
  • Thank you, sir. Your steadfast response is much appreciated. Must say I've been a fan of your stuff ever since you joined /Film...you're very thorough and Sciretta was right about you finding buried leads and getting some real stories.

    Well done.
  • thankyoufor
    WAIT......
first time your excited for SPIELBERG!!!!
saving private ryan....schindler's list......munich, minority report...
your right TIN TIN is gonna be the one for you....damnit....
  • I might well end up not liking Tintin either. But the script should be fun at least.

Now... what was it Mamet said about Schindler's List...
  • RNL
That nobody should ever try to come to terms with the Holocaust or express anything about it, artistically or otherwise... or something to that effect.

It was reactionary and anti-intellectual anyway.

    Not that Spielberg isn't too...
  • CloserThanYouThink
i auditioned for Tin Tin and this is how i found out i didnt get the part? oh pooh
  • My commiserations.
  • Well color me impressed for the most part. Now on to my complaints...
I don't like Jamie Bell. I like Zoe Bell and Jamie King, who I have mistaken this kid, by name, for many times. But there's just some quality about that kid that infuriates me. I guess he's just one of those people I hate for no particular reason.
I'm also not a big Jackson fan. I loved his early gorefests, but I didn't like the Rings trilogy. I gave the second one another shot last night, but unfortunately it only cemented my position. The special effects are already starting to look dated. I guess he won't have much to do with this until the sequel.
That's about it. Otherwise I'm pretty excited. I used to love Tin Tin. And I adore the Shaun of the Dead crew being involved.
  • Got to say this is a big bunch of meh. I love Craig and Jamie Bell is pretty good but the Pegg factor will count me out. That and the fact it's Tintin.
  • Counted out for the Pegg factor? Blasphemy!
  • Tom
    Blistering Blue Blasphemy at that!
  • I'm afraid there's only one genius working in British comedy today and it's definitely not Pegg.
  • Which begs the question: are you really saying it's Ricky Gervais?
  • If he's not he should be.
  • It's been too long since Rik and Eddie were. I miss them. Especially 'Wrick!'
  • Rich Johnston
Chris Morris, Armando Iannucci, Graham Lineham, Vic Reeves, James Cordon, Ruth Jones or The Mighty Boosh?
  • Yes it was Ricky Gervais. I also think Corden, Jones, Fielding, Brand, Boyle, Howard, O'Briain, Connolly and some others are absolutely fantastic but Gervais is a true genius of comedy.
  • Rich Johnston
As much as I like Ricky Gervais, is he really a genius of comedy Compared to Chris Morris? The man currently working on Four Lions, a sitcom about Northern English Jihadists? Or against Stewart Lee, the man behind Jerry Springer The Opera and considered the finest standup in the country? Or Vic Reeves, whose surreal language redefined Britain through the nineties? Gervais, is good, very good, but if he's genius, you have to put him in the league of Milligan, Cleese, Everett, Sessions....
  • I do see it as putting myself out there somewhat but yes I would say genius - Office, Extras, Animals, Politics, Fame. . .Not a foot wrong. And this side of the truth looks fantastic. I would also ask who claims Stewart Lee is the finest stand-up in Britain? Gervais seems to generally be seen as better and surely Connolly is the best? And what of Russell Howard and Frankie Boyle? Stand-ups that truly push the boundaries.
  • -gasp- BLASPHEMY INDEED!
  • Yes :) Gad Elmaleh is a french humorist who also made comic movies (only in France); hmmm, he will maybe do the insurance guy (named Lampion in French)
  • Jealous much?
  • This movie is going to be a huge flop. TinTin as a movie? Come on.
  • I would agree, however, with all those names tagged on to it, I'm sure it will do decent. I guess it just matters how much cash they put into it.
  • Of what?
  • Bradford
Thank you, sir. Your steadfast response is much appreciated. Must say I've been a fan of your stuff ever since you joined /Film...you're very thorough and Sciretta was right about you finding buried leads and getting some real stories.
  • jfree
Have you folks ever read Tin Tin? The action in that mess DOES. NOT. STOP.

It has the possibility of being a heck of a lot of fun.
  • Brendon....sorry if my reply to your answer gets sent twice...my computer was being wonky and I wasn't sure if it went through previously...thanks again for your prompt response...keep up the good work.
  • Thanks, Bradford. I'll do my best.
  • I don't care if this makes no many at all or if it makes a buttload. Too much attention is focused on the three-day box-office results, especially in America. There really is no correlation between how good a film is and how much money it makes. Too many times have I heard people pass up worthwhile films because "it didn't do well at the box-office." Who the fuck cares? The Big Lebowski was a "bomb" at the time, but look at it now! *oldmangrumble*
Getting that out of the way - I'm extremely excited for this. I remember hearing Edgar saying he was working on something he couldn't talk about...this must be it. Sounds pretty promising.
  • Any other project and all of those names would be getting me excited right now. But there's something about Tin Tin that just keeps me uninterested.
  • DeadlyPorpoise
Brendon - long time reader of film ick here! Good scoop - the fact that a Tintin film is being made at all is amazing to me (in a good way). Michestellar makes an absolutely valid point - even if this makes zero money in the States, surely the European love for Tintin will balance this out - especially in DVD sales?
  • Not a scoop, but thanks for the kind words.
  • Rick
I don't get the 'one big big star below the break' bit when you'd already mentioned daniel craig in headline. Anyway, mackenzie crook was in the uk version of the office.
  • I didn't write the headline.
  • i am pumped for a tintin movie. reading those books back in the day highlight of my childhood cant wait to see it brought to the screen. and wright would be awesome for the director of the third one
  • Sauce
Are you nay sayers kidding me? With the names/faces attached to this, (mainly Steven S., Jackson, Serkis, Craig, and Crook from the Pirates flicks) this thing will cause a Tintin bonanza. It will be a manufactured bonanza, but, I got the feeling the books will be re-released here in the states, they'll have kids meal toys, huge trailers going up in front of the Superbowl...Oh yeah, with Steven S. attached and lots of money being thrown at this, mark my digital words, they'll Make this huge. They're gonna sell this as an action adventure popcorn flick. Think European Pirates of the Caribbean.

Also, Pegg + Frost + Wright = Purchased ticket.
  • T. Thomas Thompson
I heard that British Footballer Clive Bagley and the famous Brit comedian Wee Bloody Me were to be cast as Reverend Roger Bumstake and Nutman Philbert. I can't see this production being able to afford both of those legends, no matter the budgie.
  • Thanks for that news and insightful commentary.
  • This is turning into a great project.
  • Wasn't really interested in this before, but with this cast and Spielberg directing - WOW!
  • Oh, here's a look at Edgar's blog for the day. I'm taking this as a confirmation.

    http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blo...
  • Cast looks pretty good. I might actually open my mind to the possibility that this might be good.
  • Rol
I second Larcenette. Gad Elmaleh will be a scene-stealer. He co-starred with Audrey Tautou in Priceless (Hors de Prix).

Obviously brought in to appeal to the French-speaking audience familiar with Tintin. Its better than the usual Jean Reno or Gerard Depardieux...
  • Sounds like they got the ball rolling quick on this project.
  • The mention of a Unicorn makes me... hesitant, to say the least. But hell, I trust Steven. Speaking of the Unicorn in the heading, the whole sub-heading thing on the first film leads me to believe this will blow up big and allow sequels with otehr cool sub-headings. TinTin and the Magical Mailman, etc...

  • I haven't read a Tintin book in ages, but hallelujah! This is (almost) all around brilliant. The one thing I am still worried about is the performance capture. I hope it is as far away from the Zemeckis muck as possible.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Doesn't matter who is cast - they have their work cut out for them if they are going to get American audiences excited for this.
