The 2009 Screen Actors Guild Award Winners

Last night marked the 15th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards at the Shrine Exposition Center. Many see the SAG awards as indicative of who the Oscar winners will be. If that’s the case, then last night’s awards portend an interesting evening on Febraury 22nd. You’ll find a list of last night’s winners after the jump, but first a few quick notes:

  • As expected, the SAG for Best Supporting Actor went to Heath Ledger for his performance in The Dark Knight
  • Prior to last night, The Dark Knight was given the SAG award for “Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.” This means that TDK actually took home two awards total.
  • Kate Winslet was nominated for both Best Actress (Revolutionary Road) and Best Supporting Actress (The Reader), but only took home an award for the latter.
  • For his amazing performance in Milk, Sean Penn beat out Mickey Rourke for the Best Actor statue. I think either one of them deserved to win this one, and it’ll basically be a coin toss come Oscar night.
  • Meryl Streep won a much-deserved Best Actress SAG Award although I was honestly hoping that Anne Hathaway would beat her out, after Hathaway lost to Winslet at the Globes. Nonetheless, Streep’s performance in Doubt is one of 2008’s bravest, and a marvel to behold.
  • Most significantly, Slumdog Millionaire won the “Outstanding Performance by a Cast” award, making it a favorite for Best Picture come Oscar night.

The nominees and winners in the film categories were as follows:

Outstanding Actress In A Supporting Role

Amy Adams - Doubt
Kate Winslet - The Reader

Discuss: What do you think of the winners?

  • Rachel Getting Married should have won the "performance by a cast" award. That wasn't only the best ensemble of the last year, it was one of the best ensembles I have ever seen.

And it's patently ridiculous that Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei aren't hoovering up awards left right and centre.
  • Birch
Rachel Getting Married's cast did an excellent job but I think that Doubt was an acting tour de force and while it was not the best movie all year, it had an amzing set of performances across the board.

Two oddities bout last night's awards though. First, Slumdog Millionaire for best ensemble cast? The acting was the least spectacular part of that movie. I loved it, but for it's screenplay, direction, and art design. The acting was slightly above average, I thought. Also, Dev Patel was up for supporting actor? Was he not the lead actor and main character of the movie? Can anybody explain why he was put in the supporting actor category?
  • I completely agree. Slumdog was a fantastic movie, but not because of the acting. Not that the acting was bad, but there weren't standout performances. The real stars were the screenplay, cinematography, and Boyle's directing. The best cast award seems a little misplaced, but I guess this is the SAG equivalent of best picture so maybe that's what they were going for.
  • Since Slumdog is the Hollywood darling at the moment I think you're right, Nexus_6 about SAG giving Slumdog the award because it their equivalent of Best Picture.
Slumdog is probably one of the best movies I've seen where it is not the acting that carried the film.
In my opinion the two films that were better because of the acting this year are Doubt and Milk without the cast I don't think either movie would have received as much praise.

if Rourke doesnt win the Oscar, i am going to nuke Hollywood
  • agreed.
  • I agree. I have contacts for the...hmhm... nuke...hmhm thing...
  • hey! you stole my pic! cmon now! ha, just kidding,,,
  • Just give me a heads up so I can find a fridge to hide in.

Sadly, last night's win for Sean Penn was not a surprise considering the make up of the Screen Actor's Guild. Though Rourke's was clearly a more moving and memorable performance, people tend to vote to further their political beliefs. With the Prop 8 fiasco this fall there is no doubt Penn will win come Oscar night not because of his performance (which was good) but because the Academy is trying to save face for passing over "Brokeback Mountain" a few years ago. Sad.
  • yeah it's really no surprise the SAG chose Penn i just hope that the academy dosen't take the same approach with Milk, don't get me wrong I love Van Sant but i can't understand how The Wrestler or Revolutionary Road weren't nominations for BP

If Heath Ledger wins the BAFTA Award on February 8, it's completely over at the Oscars. At that point, he will have won the BAFTA, SAG, Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards for "The Dark Knight."

Only one actor in history has won those four awards for a single movie, but lost the Oscar. Russsell Crowe (2002, A Beautiful Mind) lost to Denzel Washington after sweeping the first four major award shows.

Don't panic "Dark Knight" fans. Crowe assaulted and threatened the producer of the BAFTA Awards after his speech was cut short and the music was cued. The US Academy had no choice but to give it to Washington.

Barring a monumental upset, Ledger is a BAFTA victory away from sealing the deal.

Congrats to "Slumdog," Winslet, Penn and James Earl Jones :)
  • Luis
Heath Ledger will win the BAFTA and The Oscars!!! Now a question, this is the first time? Or other actor already won all of these awards?
  • Mikey B.
Javier Bardem and Daniel Day-Lewis each won the "Big 5" last year for "No Country" and "There Will Be Blood," respectively. I'm sure a couple of other actors achieved the same accomplishment, but it's very rare. Acting awards are split between different award shows (like Rourke and Penn this year for Best Actor).

And to put things in perspective, the only major defeat for Ledger was courtesy of the National Board of Review. These people are on another planet because they did not give acting honors to Bardem and Day-Lewis last year for their incredible performances! This year, Best Actor went to Clint Eastwood, who couldn't even get an Oscar nomation.

Now, I know for a fact that there has never been a comic book movie performance that won the "Big 5" major awards, let alone a single major award. What Heath has accomplished is incredible and tragic at the same time.
  • I really hope Penn doesn't win.
  • ineedahermida
I agree! He just played a gay, I Am Sam. Mickey Rourke definately deserves an Oscar
  • G G
I enjoyed Slum Dog but I think the hipe is a bit much. I think it was a well put together script about India. I still feel that Doubt was a very strong and gripping movie! I have not seen Brad and Angies movies yet, but I will this week and let you know. Acting in my mind is when an actor can make you totally forget who they are and deliver the character 100 percent! Slumdogs characters were playing themselves and we will see if they can bring it in the future. This will be there test.
  • John
    I Agree!

SM win Outstanding Performance by a Cast?! WTF is that... the actors are not even good. The prize should go to Doubt atleast there we have amazing performances by almost everyone, and they know how to act.
  • agreed
  • Mikey B.
Everyone seems to be disagreeing with Brendon since he joined /Film.
  • abovevox
What is the explanation for Kate Winslett being nominated for Supporting actress for The Reader in the Globes and SAG, but the Academy Awards nominate her as a lead actress.
  • Mikey B.
The Academy doesn't want to pull a "Jamie Foxx" and nominate her for two different categories. They want to spread the wealth. In addition, Winslet was submitted for Best Actress from both films, but the Academy has a rule that bans an actor or actress from being nominated twice in a single category.
  • I really hope that Heath Ledger wins an Oscar.
  • the oscar battle between penn and rourke will be a good one. interesting b/c guild members ( actor's UNION) et to vote for these and the MPAAA you have to be invited to join. If you are nominated then you are invited to join. There are more independent actors/ member sin the MPAA b/c they nominate unique films ( see javier berdem in before the night falls - j. depp has two roles in that film, both in the second half), actors liek these will be less prejudice against rourke, like meryl streep is- even though she gave a good speech last night.
  • part II

penn had good practice for milk, by giving speeches to crowds in "all the kings men". Rouke gives a killer performance ( see grunts, when name is called out at pharmcacy, and "call me randy" when the doctor calls him robin).

I will say that penn gives a great effort, but so does rourke. this will be a good battle.

looking for oldman's speech last nite on accepting ledger's award, please send info if you have. i like how the guild incorpoarted a few of ledger;s lines already- "if your good at soemthing, nver do it for free, in on eof the montages".

Go ledger... yeahh! "HIT ME!!!! I wantcha to..."
  • I find Sean Penn's performance (his best yet) just as good as Rourkes... it would not be outrageous if any one of them won. But I think Rourke will take the Oscar cause Penn already has one and everybody loves a good comeback oscar.

I would really lol if Richard Jenkins took it, he also deserves one but unfortuneately picked a bad year to compete for best actor
  • I've been ranting on these comment threads that Heath likely won't win the Oscar, but now I must admit I am starting to doubt myself. It is going to be an interesting night.
  • I know you don't want him to win, I've read some of your comments, but he does have a great shot at winning. I want him to win but he's up against a few good actors.
  • Oh, I would LOVE to see Heath win it! I'm a fellow Australian and it would be amazing if it actually came off for him... I just don't believe it will. Or, at least, I didn't start to think it might be possible until this SAG.
  • I remember a year ago hearing about his great performance from everyone involved with the film. They were all saying he should be nominated, which I thought was a stretch, but now that he is, he's got a great shot. If anyone should win, it should be Josh Brolin since he's the only person to win a supporting award this year besides Ledger.
  • Mikey B.
I'm really glad you thought Heath wouldn't be able to pull this off because of Oscar politics, and not the performance itself. I looked up some Oscar history in terms of acting awards, and at this point, it would be damn near impossible for Heath to lose. But pay close attention to the BAFTA (British Oscars) Awards on February 8, it's not televised, but a Heath win secures it.
  • I think at this point I would be surprised if Heath didn't win the Oscar though I'm one of the few who wouldn't be outraged if he didn't.
  • Does anyone have a link to the acceptance speeches, especially Gary Oldman's for Heath Ledger?
  • blackmanjew
i thought mall cop was damn good
  • JC25
So apparently I am the only person alive who didn't like Slumdog Millionaire. I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't think it was anywhere near the best picture I watched this year. Frost/Nixon was by far the best movie I saw this year.
  • John
    Agreed about the Slumdog part.
  • Weyland_Yutani
thought it was a nice movie, but shouldn't be anywhere near the BP category.
  • Penn is an amazing actor (and director); a shame he can be so arrogant and long-winded sometimes.
  • Nice to see Heath Ledger won another award. I guess Sean Penn would have had to at least won one award for Milk. I just hope he doesn't win the Oscar because I want Mickey to win.
  • voter
seriously, slumdog millionaire sucks and i can't believe how many awards it is winning. what a shame.
  • John
Not that SM sucks, but for me it don't deserve all of the attention it's getting. One of the top 10 movies of the year? yes. Top 5? not certain. Best Picture? Hell no!
  • Steve
It would be nice to see Downey Jr. win SOMETHING for his role in Tropic Thunder. Talk about the year of outstanding performances.
  • Gabriel
Downey Jr was amazing at Tropic Thunder. But it's almost impossible to he win a award since he's competing against Heath Ledger.
  • hoth base
this seems like a short award show, with only five awards given out. that must have been the quickest award show
  • John
    There's also the TV awards.
  • I think both actors gave fantastic performances; however I am in favorite of Rouke because I enjoyed The Wrestler more than Milk.
  • Very happy to see Sean Penn taking one home. I thought I had found my favorite performance of 2008 when I saw Milk - and then I saw The Wrestler. Now I'm absolutely torn.
  • Palmer
Is it wrong that I think Slumdog Millionaire is getting more praise than it deserves? I mean essentially it's just a regular old love story.
  • Gabriel
"it's just a regular old love story. "

you put exactly the way I feel about the movie. There's nothing too exciting about it and it doens't deserved the BP award. But in recent years this is the trend with No Country For Old Men and Crash among others.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Not only that, it's a love story based on nothing more than shared proximity and not much else. Nicely contrived in that respect, but I'd prefer to see a little more "evidence" to put these two people together. I have a hard time buying into that conceit.

As a juxtaposition, the romance between Wall-e and Eve was a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving me nearly crushed by the impact of the ending. THAT is a film romance. Even Benjamin Button provides many, many more romantic emotions than Slumdog. I really do wonder where the moments are in Slumdog Millionaire where people buy into a the notion of a love story.
