Sundance Mini-Movie Review: An Education

An Education: Subject to an intense bidding war at this year’s Sundance, An Education has been sold to Sony Pictures Classics, which most likely means that nobody is going to see it unless it gets nominated for some awards at years end. The good news is that Carey Mulligan’s performance is nominatable. This is the type of film that you watch and say “WOW, who is this girl? Where did she come from?” Mark this on your wall right now - Carey Mulligan is going to be huge. I’m 100% convinced of this!

The story is adapted from Lynn Barber’s memoirs by British novelist Nick Hornby, best known to Americans as the writer of the books High Fidelity, About A Boy and Fever Pitch. Jenny is a top A-level student who has hopes of attending university at Oxford in the early 1960’s, but she meets a charismatic older man (Peter Sarsgaard) who offers an exciting alternative of seeing and experiencing life. An Education is a beautiful film about the loss of innocence. It’s extremely smart, sharply written, and almost feels like a of the classic films from the 1960’s.

Dude Carey Mulligan is SALLY SPARROW from Dr. Who's BLINK. She was amazing in it!
  • Really? That's exciting news. That was perhaps the greatest episode of Doctor Who I've ever seen. Mind you, I've only seen the new series... but Blink is also one of the better episodes of television that exists, and the actress who played Sally Sparrow was wonderful in it.

Peter are you contractually obligated to slam Sony Classics every time you mention them? At least you didn't say AN EDUCATION could be this year's JUNO....

Peter, who would win in a fight: Carey Mulligan or Ellen Page?
  • Maybe we can get Harry Hill to stage a bout and find out for us.

    @ peter

how is saarsgard in this? i believe he is a force to be reckoned with, and one of our finest, but for some reason he has picked a few forgetable roles. hopefully he's back on track, and i'm wondering if this is a film that will return him to the front of the line.
  • Like a of the what now?
  • I doubt Sony Classics would have picked this up were they not planning on pushing it for awards. That said is sounds interesting, and Sarsgaard sounds perfect for this type; suave, meticulous... and Carey Mulligan is certainly cute. Cuter than Page :P
  • The plot for this film is done over and over again.

Such a beautiful movie. Carey Mulligan played a high school girl several years ago with similarly touching and accomplished skill. But I felt sad leaving An Education that such sleazy people can so cruelly take advantage of people because of their own neurosis.
