Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet May Not Happen After All

Things aren’t looking up for Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet project. According to Drew McWeeny over at Hitfix, the buzz at Sundance is that the movie is basically on life support over at Sony, and that there’s “a good chance the studio’s going to kick the plug out any moment now.” McWeeny reports:

[A]t Sundance, I heard several people say that the film was off completely. I spoke this afternoon with a source close to the film, and while they didn’t call it completely dead, they did say it is “highly unlikely” that the film will shoot in 2009 at all.

For me, following the development of this movie has been an emotional roller coaster. If you’ll recall, first there was raw excitement when we found out that action legend Stephen Chow would not only star as Kato in the film, he would be directing it too. Then a month ago, those hopes came crashing down when Chow was removed from the production due to creative differences. Despite these troubles, I think many of us were still assuming that the film would still actually happen. Now it’s looking less and less like a possibility, which is a shame. I’m not the biggest Seth Rogen fan, but his take on Hornet promised to at least be conceptually interesting.

Discuss: Assuming Drew’s sources are accurate, would you be sad to see this project die?

  • With Chow directing I was kind of looking forward to it, without him.... meh.
  • not really.
  • jason B
the best way to do this film, would have been to let stephen chow stylize it the same way he has done his other films. at least then it would have been unique and not just another dime-a-dozen action comedy.

since that oportunity is gone, i could really give a shit about the film anymore.
  • I will cry myself to sleep, as this might just be the downfall of Rogen. They will be tears of joy.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Rogen's attachment to this project was nothing but misguided arrogance. It's good to see that someone decided to grow a pair and say "no."
  • From the very beginning I thought the same thing. Rogen could never play the Green Hornet without completely ruining it. I think he got a little full of himself, thought he could pull it off, and then people realized that Rogen was actually going to play the Hornet, laughed at him, and lost faith in the whole thing (esp. after Chow's departure).

I realize I am responding to your comments 11 months after the fact, and much has changed to entice Rogen to continue on his march to insanity
trying to do justice to the "green hornet" but I agree with you completely on this!! In pursuing this role Rogen will be doing a great injustice to a character way,way ahead of his time, the role calls for someone as close to a Van Williams persona as is possible perhaps another long talk with George Clooney or at least someone in that class
All I know is the Green Hornet was,as portrayed by Williams one of the classiest crime fighters I have ever encountered in attitude, appearance,
and weaponry, the hornet sting alone was a remarkable one of a kind weapon, let alone a gas gun and of course the black beauty and not least! Kato of course. All my rambling is my way of saying this is a certain kind of character and you need a certain kind of actor to play the role right and seth Rogen is not that actor by a galactic longshot, nuff said P.S. I also say keep the attire exactly the same as in the original tv series,it was perfect and I have seen a clip of what Rogen is wearing and it is giant dud in appearance! I have waited all these years for THIS yikes
  • If I was a studio exec in our current economical crisis I would kick the plug out on this too.
  • I think I must have missed the We Hate Seth Rogen boat that a lot of people seem to be on. or something. I like him. He's a hot piece.
  • I'm getting tired of everybody trying to remake classic material for no good reason... You would think that studio people would learn from countless flops like the new version of The Pink Panther with Steve Martin... Peter Sellers is probably still spinning in his grave.... Not every good idea should be redone.
  • Looks like he didn't need to lose all of that weight after all.
  • Nahh he did:P that guy was getting big
  • miller
Yeah whats with all the rogan hate in here?
  • Oi Vey
People make as if he's so untalented that he doesn't deserve any credit. The man co-wrote Superbad, a movie that I liked a lot. He was in Freaks and Geeks, a beloved show. I don't get it either.

People can have opinions and I respect them, but I can always tell who are the bandwagon people.
  • It's weird alright, I understand that people may not like his style of comedy, that's personal taste, but the last few years everyone has been praising him. I guess it's that old internet mentality, you can only like something for a while (until everyone else does) then you've got to start hating it.
Same thing happened to a degree with The Dark Knight, as well as Heath Ledgers performance.
By the way, I'm not having a go at people who have never really liked Seth's roles, just those who are jumping on the bandwagon, it's really annoying.
  • I haven't liked Rogen from the beginning. Then again, all he does is Apatow films. He has no range...
  • Rogen has been in plenty of films that have nothing to do with Apatow.

Anyway... would you knock James Stewart for collaborating with Hitchcock on multiple occasions, or Jack Lemmon for his films with Billy Wilder?
  • No, I wouldn't, but that's because those people had honest to god talent. Seth Rogen is just a guy who has connections...
  • Oi Vey
ANYTIME a comedic actor makes it big, there' always a weird backlash online. Funny enough, Rogan has been in well liked movies thus far, so it's not like he's pulling a Steve Martin in the Pink Panther remake.

People have to realize that these sort of backlashes don't exist in the real world. The internet is one giant public bathroom stall, if you know what I mean.
  • In the real world, they exist as well. We have Critics, award shows, THE RAZZIES...want more?
  • Weyland_Yutani
I don't hate Rogen, but I do love The Green Hornet.

    Rogen in Superbad = awesome
Rogen in Zack and Miri = awesome
Rogen in Green Hornet = Nic Cage in Superman = WTF?
  • miller
On this i agree hes not a good choice for the green hornet. I think most people are putting him down because of doing apatow films. People need to stop being film snobs.
  • I am sort of bummed
as far as the creative differences went I heard Chow wanted to do a more wacky comedy in veign of kung fu hussle and Rogen wanted a more serious take on it. Having the comedy come only from the relationship of Kato and Britt Reed
  • This is the best news. I have never thought this sounded good. I love Seth Rogan, but not as the Green Hornet.
  • This movie has been fukd since Jump Street...
  • TheFinger
No idea why "I'm not the biggest Seth Rogen fan" hasn't rsulted in calls of Fire David, KillDavid, Kick David in the balls. Brendon didnt do anything David didnt. You just dont like his opinions so much it seems.
That sounds like fascism to me. Hate crime.
Id call you all a bunch of bastards if I could get away with it.
  • I'm guessing the script wasn't strong to begin with. That's what it has to be. Either that, or Rogen must not be easy to work with. Directors don't just pull out for no reason... Honestly, it's about time for Rogen to fade away.

Actually, after re-reading the "creative differences" part, I bet Rogen is a priss to work with...
  • Baconface
this is very sad news for me! i was looking forward to this so much! there has got to be a director SOMEWHERE in Hollywood who would like to direct this! (god knows i would!!!) maybe Rogen should step in and direct it himself! that would be awesome

there is plenty of time before the planned release date, so HOPEFULLY this thing can get back on track
  • Im a fan of Rogen! Minus that pinneaple express hiccup! I love his style of comedy! And that laugh he does is unforgettable!

As for the green hornet project...meh
  • Jon
Did you not like Pineapple Express or just Rogen's performance in it? I thought James Franco was fantastic in that movie, he saved it for me. I'll admit Rogen wasn't very good in that movie.
  • good with chow and seth rogen it would of bin to much of a comedy. and things i heard like they said one scene were the green hornet was going to punch one guy and make him go flying 40 feet in the air. i think that would of bin dumb really dumb. dont get me wrong i like seth rogen i think he his hell of funny but him playing a super hero i mean come on i cant be the onlly one that thinks he would be a horrible super hero. he should stick with comedy. i am looking forward to that comedy about cancer with seth rogen i think its called im with cancer and seth rogen is going to play a cancer patient. it's time to beat cancer once and for all with a good laugh
  • In a way I am glad that they are talking of pulling the plug. I for one love Seth Rogen, but I truly think that he would have ruined the Green Hornet.
  • Anti-Septic
I like many people here were disappointed to hear of Stephen Chow stepping down because of creative differences. That is pretty unique as he is not known for being that difficult, he will generally work with people so there must have been some pretty significant views to have this happen.

I know that Asian Directors don't like filming in the USA as well as they have so many hurdles to jump just to film the damn movie. The whole union, worker, Hollywood formula/experience for most Asian Directors is to much to handle. That could have contributed to the meltdown as well.
  • Jon
I think Seth Rogen is great, but I guess it's just my opinion. I really had no idea so many people disliked him. Oh well.

This is a good thing. The project probably won't get made now, and that is disappointing. But I never wanted it to get made with Rogen attached to it. Stephen Chow would've been great. They should just ditch this idea all together and go right back to the drawing board.
  • Like most I was intrigued when this project was announced, but I won't be sad to see it die (this project, not the 'Green Hornet' in general) as I just can't see how Rogen would work progressively in this film.
  • Dr. Doc
ROGEN SHOULD JUST DIRECT IT HIMSELF!!!
  • Ricky
Who cares about the Green Hornet? I want the Green Arrow
  • I had an issue w/ this project from the moment I heard that Seth Rogen was writing/starring in it. I don't dislike Seth Rogen or his work. As a matter of fact, I'm quite a fan of his. However, I didn't feel he was the right person for the project for either creative role.
But, when I heard that Stephen Chow would be directing it, I genuinely grew excited. Then, he signs off the project over "creative differences", which is never a good sign for any film.
So, if this project doesn't happen, I surely will not lose any sleep over it. If anything, I'll be able to get a little more.
  • chuck
    Did Drew leave AICN?
  • tom
Rogen's a little over exposed at the moment. It wouldn't hurt for him to say no a few times in a row. I'm fine with this film being shelved forever. I didn't care about it until Chow was directing and I'm back to not caring again without him directing.
  • 790
Best news I've heard in the last 20 min.
There's really no seth rogen hate bandwagon going on here, he's hated by a lot of ppl not just bloggers...
I can't stand the fat turd, and I'm not alone.

I wish Diablo Cody and Rogen would hook up sometime and OD on some PCP laced chronic... Maybe in a porta pod backstage at the Spirit Awards.

Just my opinion, the guys a piece of human excrement. And remember sports fans, when ppl desire to become celebrities they open themselves up to being judged by the public...
  • blackmanjew
this is probably a good thing for Rogen's career. I could see it now... ben affleck (DD), halle berry (catwomen), Seth Rogan (green hornet)
  • This project needs a Connelly Rumor Killer feature.
  • figures as much, and i hope this is true. i have 30 films that have logo's like this one ( except i am not dumb enough to put a release date on it) that will not be made either.

incredible... they need to slow down...
  • After his off color comment at the Golden Globe about Mickey Rourke and doing coke, this guy should be shown the door.
  • Dave
Seth Rogen isn't fit to carry Stephen Chow's shoes, much less argue humor or writing. Rogen's sort of pleasant on camera, but he hasn't done much other than aim squarely at the lowest common denominator for his entire career. Not there's anything wrong with that, there's a market for it; but Chow, well, Shaolin Soccer was one of his *weaker* movies. Seth Rogen in a Stephen Chow movie'd be like watching Clay Aiken in Apocalypse Now, and Chow in a Rogen movie... what'd be the point?
  • I hope this turns out great!
  • Roxley
nooo pleeaaassse let this film go ahead!! i really like seth rogen and actually think he's got a super-cute face!! so the idea of a slim, buff seth as a super hero sounds fantastic!! darn it!
  • schlog
I think this film sounds like one of the most interesting projects in years, it could be an absolute trainwreck, just plain godawful or could end up as a cult classic. Michel Gondry is not a conventional choice as a director and having Stephen Chow and Seth Rogen as stars, this could end up as a seriously offbeat, weird movie, the kind of movie I like. I know people are disappointed with Stephen Chow not directing Green Hornet, but I'm kind of glad, hope he gets back to making Kung Fu Hustle 2 !
  • Gah, really? Is there anyone, anyone outside of the studio who wants this Green Hornet? Green Hornet people would rather not. Wouldn't Rogen fans rather see him do something else? If it's a spoof, why not spoof something that people actually remember (haven't they learned from Speed Racer ... and that was more recent)? So ... why? Why?
