News of Wolverine reshoots the other day set off a firestorm of speculation about whether they meant good or bad news for the new Fox comic book film. Things got so intense that Hugh Jackman himself fired off an e-mail to quell the Fox-hating battle tide. From IESB, We’re now learning at least one of the major reasons behind the reshoots: Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool character.

According to a user on the site, “most of the footage shot included Reynolds and Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman,” and Reynolds’ appearance will be significantly more than a cameo. This implies that at least some of the reshoots went to doing significant character work; whether you interpret that as good or bad, I leave up to you.

According to Deadpool’s Wikipedia entry, “Like the X-Men’s Wolverine, Deadpool is the product of the Canadian government’s paramilitary Weapon X program, although his place of birth is unknown. After Weapon X cured his terminal cancer by implementing a regenerative ‘healing factor’ extracted from Wolverine, Deadpool is left disfigured and mentally unstable.” Reynolds is reportedly obsessed with the character, hoping for a spin-off based on the success of Wolverine. While publicity photos have shown Reynolds portraying Deadpool sans-iconic mask, it’s already been hinted that the Wolverine film will somehow depict his disfigurement.

Discuss: Any Deadpool fans out there? If so, are you happy knowing that he’ll play a larger part in the upcoming Wolverine film?

  • I just hope none of it is forced in there.

I wonder how the public will receive his Spider-Man-like costume.
  • Agreed, I want it to feel natural and just not force like you say just so FOX can warrant a spin off. I am glad to hear though it won't be a cameo, Deadpool is a cool character. I hope they have him get scarred in the movie. I am still unsure of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, but I think he has gotten better with Nines, Definitely Maybe, and I bet Adventure land will be good. So hopefully my Van Wilder image of him will shake away before May, it will probably help if I got back and watch Nines. Also is Ryan Reynolds a comic book fan? He did the shitty Blade III, and he always wanted to do Flash, and now he is Deadpool. Well I am just glad the character will get screen time, and hopefully Gambit will get plenty of screen time. I just am still hating the fact that Will I.Am is in this, its Will I.Am!!
  • DrChi,
did you see Just Friends? He was great in that. It wasn't dramatic or anything, but he has fantastic comic timing. He wasn't bad in Smoking Aces and Chaos Theory either. In fact, he was pretty darn good in Chaos Theory, despite the movie being luke-warm.
  • I wasn't a fan of Just Friends. I find him kind of annoying in comedic roles, especially Van Wilder and even Waiting. Yeah he was actually good in Smokn Aces but not a very good movie, took itself a little too seriously.
  • Well, hopefully that sort of annoying comic talkativeness that Reynolds shows in Van Wilder can be channeled successfully into Deadpool's wisecracking character.
  • I wonder if we'll get to see the costume from the comics?
  • Nice, The only reason Wolverine is going to be good. Deadpool is the shit and one of the best characters in Marvel and all of comics
  • Brian Rodden
Who gives a fuck about Deadpool?
  • Apparently not you.
But I do know a lot of people who swear by dead pool as the best Marvel Character. We'll see how it turns out. The character may be a big untapped draw for Hollywood. Don't judge so quickly.
  • you need to watch Hulk vs Wolverine. Dead pool is so funny in that. He is a cool guy who is a bit on the edge, he's part in this movie will only be small. but it will definately stand out and be remembered..

    Bring on a Deadpool film..
  • BEN
RYAN REYNOLDS SHOULD NOT HAD ANY INVOLVEMENT IN THE MOVIE. HE'S NOT A GOOD ACTOR. I DO GIVE HIM PROPS IN THE COMEDIC FIELD. OTHER THAN THAT THERE PROB. RE SHOOTING BECAUSE HIS ACTING SUCKED.
  • I agree he's isn't a good actor. He's got that one shtick of being the witty, smarmy, prick (Tim Matheson did it better in Animal House).

Which oddly enough works for Reynolds and this comic character.
  • Guy, you people have to stop it with the caps locks. It's annoying and makes people not take your post seriously. Also, your misspelling words doesn't help either. Nor does your assumption that they are "PROB. RE SHOOTING SCENES BECAUSE HIS ACTING SUCKED." Yes. I am sure that is the only reason.
  • Dr. Get over it
EXACTLY I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE USE ALL CAPS, TOO. BUT I LOVE GOOD GRAMMAR BEING AN ENGLISH PROFESSOR.
  • skippy
sheesh, stop YELLING at us... will you people please use your indoor voice? what, are you commenting in a tornado???
  • yay
  • Palmer
So...is there hope that he'll actually where the mask?
  • Also the movie from the trailer does not seem dark at all like people are implying. It literally showed Wolverine fighting The Blob in a boxing match with boxing gloves and all, while Will I.Am is on a mike commentating the fight. Go to cinematically and you'll see what I am talking about. Also Wolverine killing a helicopter?!? What is it with FOX and crashing stuff into helicopters (Die Weak 4). I hope it is good but I don't want to get my hopes up because it is a FOX movie, director/studio fights, big cast so some characters could be under developed, and it had Wolverine clawing a helicopter.
  • gah
    HAHAHAHHAHAHA!!! Exactly what i thought!!!
  • All the Ryan Reynold whiners need to watch The Nines.
    ps. This is awesome news.
  • i have seen that film. Very wierd and whacked out, i loved it.. Ryan Reynolds can really put on a show, he is funny and yet very instinct to each character he plays.

i don't think he'll translate very well outside the comic medium personally. deadpool is bat shit crazy. he often suffers from halucinations (which paco medina recently illustrated as the hillarious Pool-O-Vision) and quite often doesn't understand the dire situations he finds himself in. he's not just goofy, he's literally insane, but at the same time he's one of the most lethal mercinaries in the marvel universe. i just don't see that character coming to life in a way that makes sense outside of a comic book personally. but i'm also biased since daniel way's new deadpool series has been my absolute favorite new comic title since it's debut.

i just don't think fox can do it. i also feel like fox has done a terrible job with wolverine. hugh jackman does a great job with what he's given and i enjoy watching him, but he never seems like more than a tough guy with claws. in the books wolverine is 'the best there is at what he does.' i've never once felt like the movies depict him as the ultimate killing machine. maybe origins will fix that, but given their track record so far i'm skeptical at best
  • Antony
also, i can't stand simone bianchi's artwork. how the hell are you supposed to see crow's feet through a fucking mask? we get that you can fit way more detail in one panel than most of your peers, why don't you stop showing off and draw an illustration that has some plausability in its rendering? anyone else? i'm alone out here? whatever, give me paco medina or john cassady over that showboat any day of the week.
  • it makes a lot of sense since Reynolds could have been busy with his wedding and Fox may have greenlit the Deadpool movie...it's all good news
  • I really dislike Ryan Reynolds, sorry that was to nice. I cant stand Ryan Reynolds. He plays the same douche it every movie.
I REALLY hope he doesn't ruin the character I was looking forward to see the most.
  • Well Deadpool is kind of a "douche" per se. So it fits.
  • pmharrell
Deadpool is hilarious and there is absolutely no way he will survive the transfer to film.
  • yes im happy that he will play more then a cameo. but i also look forward to seeing gambit and the blob. im shock that no one talks alot about the blob being in the movie. i hope the blob just dosent have a cameo i hope you'll see a lot of him in the movie.
  • "While publicity photos have shown Reynolds portraying Deadpool sans-iconic mask, it’s already been hinted that the Wolverine film will somehow depict his disfigurement."

    I KNEW it.
  • I didnt think it was bad for the movie to have reshoots! A large majority of movies have reshoots
  • That's what I've been hearing as of late.
  • Jfive
As Wolverine being my favorite comic book character and Deadpool being a close second this seems like a geeks wet dream come true. But then again Fox has a hold on the reins of this puppy so it might end up being a shit storm. So I try not to aim my hopes to high but damn i would love this movie to be amazing. At least give me some satisfaction after the credits roll.
  • ..:: kidginger ::..
for all of those bashing Ryan Reynolds for playing the same character in every movie.... get over yourselves and give this a shot. Now while he usually does play the smarmy, quick-witted guy, that is not all he is capable of. For those that have brought up the nines, i commend your ability to get over past character roles (because, guess what, he's an actor and those ARE roles he is playing).

I have always liked deadpool for his wit, and complete disregard for what everyone deems as normal. (I mean, he IS insane after all). Now while im going to guess Fox will downplay this aspect of his character for more of the comedic side, i still feel reynolds will be able to hint at the insanity that will continually build inside deadpool.
  • I have no doubt Reynolds can deliver with the comedy aspect of Deadpool. The thing about Deadpool is, as it's been said, he is hardcore insane. He is also very deadly and should be taken as a serious threat. This is the part of the character I hope Reynolds can pull off, or the script allows him. To hear that there could be even more Deadpool in this movie gets me even more excited for it.
  • I guess I'm glad to hear that Deadpool won't just be a cameo. Maybe Ryan Reynolds had some scheduling conflicts and was hoping there would be a reshooting period to add more to the character.
  • gah
I like Reynolds as Deadpool. Its a good a match as any. It's just too bad this movie looks terrible. I would love to see a Deadpool movie without any interference from Fox and done by a director with balls.
  • So long as this movie is better than Spider-Man 3, i'm happy.
  • gah
    you have terribly low standards.
  • ive seen alot worse film then Spiderman 3..
  • I'm really glad to hear that some or all of the re-shoots include Deadpool. After seeing the trailer and only getting a split second of him, hopefully they'll give him more time then originally anticipated.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling that they won't do him justice in the movie. I hope they prove me wrong but I think we will need to wait for the the Deadpool movie to see it all done right.

There is a lot of hoping here. I just want to see the movie already.
  • Enthropii
    Good news. Definitely.
  • Big Deadpool fan, I hope it's done well in the movie. If Joe Kelly was scripting Deadpool it was be unbelievably funny and amazingly good.
  • Bupkis
I think Reynolds can pull it off, so it can't be a bad thing that he has more air time...or at least any worse then having to watch Hugh's Fairy ass struggle with trying to be badass Wolvey. Where the hell is Deadpools mask though? I want typical Deadpool look with the costume/mask. Hopefully they bust it out during the flick.
  • Reynolds looks hot as always. Bring on more of him.
  • rainbowcemetery
Does the scarring HAVE to be CG? Good make-up will always look better. It's not as if the scarring will be at Harvey Dent levels.
  • gah
hahaha. yeah, pick up a comic book and look at DP's scarring dude. It's worse than Two-Face.
  • I think this is a good thing.
It's like Fox may have listened to the fans wanting/hoping for more Deadpool.
If we don't see him in his full get-up it would be good for them to set-up the character for his own spin-off.
  • i think it's probably good. maybe reynold's character is testing well and they want to add more of him...

    but mask him up!
  • I'm looking forward to Wolverine. All this reshoot worry is nonsense and a standard part of most Hollywood films. However, as much as I am happy to go see Wolverine, I have found Ryan Reynolds consistently grits my shit. He's just got no other layers to his acting other than what he has already demonstrated. Hopefully he 'wows' in this role. But I have my doubts.

    iam fucking stoaked !!!
