John August is that rare thing in the arts. He’s an established professional with a back catalogue of accomplished works who we can still single out as one to watch. For my money, August’s work just keeps getting better and better, and his directorial debut The Nines was like a second debutantes ball for him (I was going to say “second coming out”, but in that case it would have been at least his third).

He’s similarly rare in his candidness, offering a very well written and well read blog which offers not only updates on his work, but technical and advice on the craft on screenwriting. In his latest post, he has confirmed EW’s scoop that he is scripting the feature film adaptation of Preacher, with Sam Mendes attached to direct and Neil Moritz producing. Moritz has a rather bad reputation, or at least a catalogue of disappointing films behind him, and I’m no fan of Mendes myself but I sincerely hope this all works out well - for the sake of August’s screenplay, as much as anything else.

There have been several attempts to mount a Preacher film before, though all have skidded and ditched rather early. Below the break is a test on the make-up for ArseFace.

These images came from the Vincent Guastini Productions website. At the time these tests were being carried out, Rachael Talalay was set to direct and Sam Jackson was being sized up for a role as the Saint of All Killers (see concept art for his make-up on the Guastini site too).

Beyond Preacher, August is set for his fifth collaboration with Tim Burton. You may know that Burton’s short Frankenweenie is to be remade as a feature, this time in stop-motion not live action, and it will be shot in 3D. What surprised me is that the film is to be black and white, that Burton is only chalked up as producer when I assumed he would co-direct a la The Corpse Bride, and that a key part of the plot appears to have changed a little. This time, say The Hollywood Reporter, it will be a man resurrecting his dog after it gets hit by a car, not a young boy.  Hmmmm. I think they’ve probably got at least that bit wrong.

Frankenweenie is expected to reach release in 2011, Preacher… when it’s ready.

  • Arsface is one ugly dude...but I will see 'Frankenweenie', in 3D!
  • So will I, and then some.
  • I just hope he uses an actual 3D camera system to shoot it with, instead of making it 3D in post like he is doing with his current film. The Red 3D camera system that they used on My Bloody Valentine was pretty friggin sweet. Wouldn't mind seeing it filmed with that.
  • Dan
man I hope Preacher is good...
  • Chadams
Here I was thinking that vampires were going to saturate the film market, when it turns out its really Tim Burton (or Tim Burton-related) stop-motion animated films. Enough! Nightmare Before X-Mas is not THAT good, especially when you consider the fact that much of its popularity is merely related to its use as a Hot Topic fashion statement.
  • i don't care if its good or bad. i just want to see preacher in big screen
  • Chadams
Same here. THAT one I can get behind big time.
  • I think I care if it's good or bad.
  • If the studio does indeed go with Augusts draft and doesn't hire some other writer to butcher it, and if Mendes actually directs it and doesn't drop out then I feel pretty good about this one. Even if you haven't been a fan of either of those guys work, you've gotta at least admit that they both have a lot of talent. With a story like Preacher and that talent being involved, it's hard to see how it would turn out bad.
I just have little faith that both of those guys will still be attached by the time the flick goes into production. Fingers crossed.
  • They definitely picked the right guy for Preacher. The Nines was a great debut for August. The concepts he dealt with in that are similar to Preacher.
  • I loved The Nines all the way up until the third act. I don't know that I would be able to come up with a better way to wrap things up, but after the first two thirds being so intriguing and wonderful it was hard not to be underwhelmed by the third act.

not a fan of mendes?? american beauty, road to perdition, jarhead, and revolutionary road....superbly directed.
  • yeah, how come you're not a fan of mendes?
  • I'll flesh that out as we go along. Maybe if I get to review one of his films.
  • Ghost
I agree, I was about to say, Mendez has some graphic novel experience already with Road to Perdition. Great films.
  • gah
Yeah, i have no idea why theres been so much Mendes hate going around of late.
  • Anybody who has not checked out August's blog yet should do themselves a favor and head on over there. There's tons of great insight into the film industry, and if you're an aspiring screenwriter then his site will be essential.
  • Just had to search Wikipedia for information on 'The Preacher' and it sounds like it could be a really good Comic Book movie if pulled off correctly. This line particularly plucked up my intrest; "Jesse Custer [main character]...may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence."
  • I think that 3D camera systems are the future, but from what I hear on the grapevine, Burton has some specific plans that benefit from his 2-to-3D conversion.
  • Agreed. The technology is pretty magnificent and is only going to get better. I can't even begin to imagine where 3D will be at ten years from now.
    PS
I tried to give you a thumbs up but accidently clicked on the thumbs down. Darn small buttons. Sorry about that.
  • Wooo thats one ugly guy up there!
Im interested in this project! What status is "Alice" in at the moment?
  • I really hope that The Preacher gets made. It's one of my favorite graphic novels...
  • gah
This movie has been in development since forever. And August doesn't have a good track record of getting things made (see Shazam!) so don't hold your breathe. Plus, if any of you have actually read Preacher, you probably fully understand why studios are having a hard time with it.
  • The View Askew Arseface looked WAYYYY better then this one....
  • looks like a girl i used to date...
  • that looks very fukd up..nice work on making the guy look scary..
  • yomamma
I can't imagine a feature film doing the series justice at all. It needs to be an HBO or Showtime series. Either that or three movies. Even if you cut out sizable chunks of the flashbacks and character origins, there's still way too much main story to fit in a single film.
  • omg! This is awesome! Preacher's really getting made! Yay!
