Sundance Movie Review: Big Fan

Former Onion editor turned screenwriter Robert D. Siegel goes from The Wrestler to making his directorial debut with Big Fan, a dramedy about a hardcore New York Giants fan played by /Film favorite Patton Oswalt. Paul Aufiero is a parking lot attendant who lives and breathes everything Giants. He spends his free time scripting intense rants against rival teams which he calls into the local Sports Dog radio show. And every game he can be found tailgating outside Giants Stadium.

But his life is turned upside down when he is beaten up by his favorite player and put in the hospital. Not only is he physically hurt, but now his team is losing due to the suspension over the incident. To make matters worse, Paul’s brother, an as seen on television lawyer, wants him to file a multi-million dollar lawsuit, and the police keep chasing Aufiero to file a report. But Paul refuses to do any harm to his team, even if it means not getting justice for the beat down he suffered.

Big Fan is not the comedy that I expected going in. Instead it’s a well made subtle character study with subtle comic elements. Siegel essentially has taken the same structure for The Wrestler, and applied it to the world of a hardcore sports fanatic. . I’m not a sports fan myself, but I know a lot of friends who are. Everyone knows one of these guys Oswalt nails it, plain and simple. There is one sequence that plays almost entirely with the camera on a closeup of his face. I was surprised to see Oswalt’s dramatic range, and that moment in particular, prove he has also has some acting chops.

The story takes a turn into some semi-dark places which you might not expect, and some people might be disappointed that Oswalt’s character doesn’t change much over the course of the film, but I think that’s the point. Hardcore sports fans don’t change.

  • I had this idea in my head for years roughly. In my mind it was a 70 year old yankee fan who was poor all his life and finally managed to save enough money to go to a game. He has a slight mental handicap and a player makes fun of his mannerisms. Never got farther than that.

I'm not saying it's good as I have better ideas in my head but just pointing out that I'm suprised this plotline hasn't been made before.

7 out of 10? Damn, I was looking forward to this the most. I hope I like it better than you did.
  • 7 out of 10 is still a good film
  • Great, I just realised I replied with "where you drunk". What an idiot I've made myself look.
  • LoL. I'll tell you the same thing that the author of this probably would. Shit happens. The only people who actually notice or care about that type of thing are the type of uber-nerds who post in the comments section of /film. Oh wait...
  • Sounds good?
  • Odd premise for a film, but I love Oswalt.
  • Glad to hear that this is more than just an indie version of an Adam Sandler comedy or something like that. I cant wait to see it.
  • Patton Oswalt is hilarious. This movie sounds pretty good

I saw Big Fan and I gotta say that i actually liked it a lot. The guy I went with hated it. I think that's pretty much how this movie is going to be received.... love/hate. I didn't really know Patton Oswald that well and I thought he was adequate but the story is a good one. Kind of a modern slacker classic if you ask me.
  • This sounds good... and I don't like sports and I hate sports fans.
  • I just recently watched a video about the 'dumbest' sports tattoo ever. It involved a die-hard Detroit Lions family whose father got a Lions' logo tattooed on his chest with "0-16 2008" underneath. In the recorded interview he and his family were very lighthearted about it and realized that although it may seem 'silly', they're committed fans to their Lions.
Knowing nothing more about Big Fan than what I've read on /film, I feel like this is that guy's life story.

saw it at the Traverse City FF, liked it a lot. I really felt sympathy for this guy as the "ultimate fan", because I know people that aren't that far from it. sports IS life for some people, because there isn't that much else to latch onto, so they take "games" that are meant to be entertaining and over-analyze the stuff to death. whatever makes ya happy I guess, could think of worse things you could get into with enough spare time..........

Just watched Big Fan and I was impressed. Robt Siegel chops are spot on. I particularly liked the sense of claustrophobia with Oswalt in close-up with flaws in evidence in every scene. I can't think of scene that Oswalt wasn't in. He really carried this film.

It was brilliant when Oswalt is in the kitchen and he ridicules his mother for saving restaurant packets of soy sauce oblivious to his own manic compulsions.
