Sundance Movie Review: Mystery Team

Before I start my review, I think I better give you a little background.

I’m not a big fan of sketch comedy, and never have been.

I have never been able to completely place why this is, but I think it might have something to do with the obnoxiously over the top characterizations and the flat stage like set-up of most of these types of shows and films. I go to a movie theater to see something cinematic, and not just a glorified SNL sketch that has been enlarged to fit the big screen. Most sketch comedy-based films also have flimsy plots that are so thinly held together with a series of comic beats. I’m a story guy and this just doesn’t work for me. All of that said, I absolutely loved Derrick Comedy’s Mystery Team.

Mystery Team is a film about a group of former Encyclopedia Brown-type child-detectives who have yet to grow up and are still solving stupid crimes during senior year of High School. When an 8-year-old hires the team to solve a case of her parents double murder, the Mystery team must face the first adult case in the team’s history. Mystery Team is incredibly well written. The Derrick comedy group have perfectly captured the feeling of reading an Encyclopedia Brown type mystery on acid. The characters are all well developed, the performances on level of “the not ready for primetime players”, a compelling story, and laugh out loud moments at every turn. But I was most impressed in the film’s cinematography, which tries much harder than any other sketch comedy film that I’ve ever seen before. It is the difference between feeling like Reno 911 and feeling like an actual movie (albeit, shot on digital video).

I had never heard of Derrick Comedy before /Film readers started sending me links for the Mystery Team trailer. But apparently they’re already a pretty big deal on the YouTube scene, with a rather large internet following. Mystery Team has the potential to be huge. It’s funnier and more original than 99% of the comedies Hollywood releases now-a-days. At very least, the film will develop a cult following. But I have a feeling that Derrick Comedy is on the edge of becoming huge. These guys are more than just a funny music video (Lonely Island) and are consistently funny and compelling (unlike Broken Lizard and Reno 911, who both have their moments, but not much more).

The whole Derrick comedy team is great, but Donald Glover is definitely that standout of the group. I should also mention the wonderful Aubrey Plaza, an Upright Citizens Brigade player who makes her feature film debut in this film. Even though she is confined to play “the straight man” in this adventure, you can tell that we’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of her.

/Film Rating: 8 out 10

I'm really excited for this, I've been following Derrick Comedy for some time now. I gotta say that its pretty ignorant to write off Lonely Island as being nothing more than a music video. If you aren't a fan of sketch-comedy, I'd assume you wouldn't go out of your way to watch Lonely Island's countless sketches leading up to there more mainstream SNL digital shorts. I'm not saying you have to like sketch comedy, I'm merely defending the (IMO) genius material that first got Lonely Island noticed. I'd argue that troupes like Derrick Comedy even being given a shot at a feature has a great deal to do with Andy, Jorm, and Keev.

i love derrick comedy, i've seen them numerous times at the ucbt, including the time they previewed the film for the lucky people that happened to be there that night :) i thought it was absolutely hilarious, and definitely much better and higher-quality than i was expecting. these guys are already pretty big, but i think this film is going to bring them places they've never been before, and i can't wait!

I just watched Mystery Team at Sundance and was horrendously let down. It was not funny. I've watched their stuff and liked it (not loved) and this felt like spending 3 hours with a group of five year olds on a perma-sugar high.

If you're at Sundance, save your $15 for BLACK DYNAMITE!
  • Donald Glover is amazing, and he also has emmys for riting for 30 Rock!
  • Derrick Comedy fucking rocks! I wanna see this so so bad...
  • I'd heard of 'Mystery Team' and seen the trailer online which grabbed my attention, but I never thought to look into the creative process and from that/this article I've just started enjoying the Derrick Comedy video's. I guess you do learn something new everyday!
  • I love Derrick Comedy and I have every since I saw Keyboard Kid on Youtube a couple years back. I can't wait to see this movie somehow. It looks hilarious and this review has solidified it's reputation for me.
  • This film sounds really good. However, Improv seems to be the popular thing to do in comedy film now.

I've seen Derrick (dude on the left in the picture) do improv before at the UCB, and he's hilarious. Really interested in this film.
  • Catch
Dude on the left is named Dominic.
  • Whats the history behind them? Virals? Tv show?
  • Film comedy resists a lot of the cinematic flair your talking about Peter. If you plan on using anything other than standard high-key light there are a half million professionals in Hollywood ready to talk you out of it. There is only one troupe that ever employed intuitive camera work and a flexible aesthetic consistently, and it took degrees from about every ivy league school Britain has, one of them had to be an American cartoonist, they had three years of bland television regulation they were inspired to shed (tv's *insistence on static medium shots), rampant traveling stage shows to build a solid intuitive group comedic presence, and two members were directors on their first film not comprised entirely of vignettes.

Mystery Team has done little to focus the narrative by using retrograde "dad with camcorder technique" and the occasional distortion of a polar lens, but that seems to have you under its spell. Some softer color tones for a comedy granted but otherwise, this falls flat for Mrs. Piggy and me.

It is however FULL of f*cking laughs that all involved did their best to pull off, albeit not in such a refreshing way.
  • peter... what do you think the odds are that this movie will get picked up for distribution and be seen in theatres?
  • I only heard about this film a few days ago and after watching the Trailer, i am dying to see this. I recently have been spending time watching some of Derrick Comedy clips and they are quite funny. Seeing this is something that i must do.
  • Pat
Derrickis god. DYING to see this.
  • They're featured pretty regularly on collegehumor.com. I like a bunch of their stuff too.
  • Josh
I felt like it was a lot of over-acting, silly costumes and hitting us over the head to make sure we knew it was supposed to be funny. Brain Candy was a good sketch-to-feature movie... this?
  • Burt
Bro-rape was dumb. The Memento spoof was funnier.
  • Well, this solidifies my trust in the movie. Actually, I would of watched it regardless, but this does help back me up. Count me in.
  • Donald Glover is a reader, I think.
  • Mr. Pendragon
I'm not sure if I find over the top swearing as the basis for jokes that funny. That's the impression I got from the trailer anyway.
  • rnl
only bad sketch comedy is "obnoxiously over the top"
  • Sean
glad to hear its good, I've love derrick comedy's stuff and was hoping this would be just as awesome
  • Derrick Comedy is one of the cream of the crop of sketch groups. Bro Rape is hilarious sketch. Looking forward to this flick!
  • Absolutely, Derrick Comedy was the one refuge that kept reminding me that youtube wasn't just a despot for worthless shed-sledding jackass-style comedy.
