In Edgar Wright’s upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, much as in Bryan Lee O’Malley’s original comics, title character Scott (Michael Cera) will be battling the evil exes of his girlfriend Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to keep their romance alive.  Until now, all of the casting announced had been of the “good guys” in the film, but word is beginning to leak of who will be playing these baddie boyfriends too.

Aint it Cool scored the scoop that Chris Evans of Cellular, those awful Fantastic 4 films and my belove Nanny Diaries, will be taking on the role of Lucas Lee.  A pro-skateboarder turned movie star and evil? Surname Lee? Wow - what has O’Malley got against that nice My Name is Earl chap? Perhaps it has something to do with Thetans.

In the comics, Lucas Lee was the second of Ramona’s evil exes.  After the break are some images of a young actor, so far only know for TV work, in the role of Matthew Patel, the first.

And here he is, Arshad Aslam as Matthew.  No official word has surfaced that Arshad has been cast in the role, but this image shows, at least, that he was sent up for it.

There’s a big Allison Jones tag on the picture.  She’s the casting agent responsible for populating The Office, Superbad and Judd Apatow’s upcoming Funny People - as well, it now seems, as Scott Pilgrim.

Aslam has appeared in Zoey 101 and Samantha Who? and, apparently, appeared as himself at various teen-targetted awards shows. What…. in the audience??

Aziz Ansari (very appropriate) and Dev Patel (less so) have both been evoked as dream casting for the role of Matthew, but to my eye, Arshad really does look the part and there’s nothing like a breakout bit of casting.

  • Looks nearly perfect with the picture comparisons.
  • broomstick
    nice try.
  • A villain called Lucas Lee? Fail.
  • It's almost as if Stan Lee named him. Peter Parker, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Matt Murdock, etc.
  • Haha! That Stan Lee and his alliterations...
  • I agree, pretty lame name for a bad guy. Sounds like you could defeat him by blowing a kiss in his general direction.

Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley says the Arshad Aslam as Matthew is not true (current top post at his website, radiomaru.com )
  • Nowhere did I say he'd been cast. If one were to read what the article actually says, it isn't that at all.

But it is interesting to know the origins of the image.
  • Paul
    True, I'd worded that poorly.
  • Oh, I wasn't criticising you at all. I was wondering why O'Malley had gotten the wrong end of the stick himself.
  • yep
Chris Evans as Lucas Less is pretty much perfect.

i always read 'lucas lee' as 'luke wilson', in fact i thought the book says that exact thing, but i could be very wrong. either way, evans will be just as good. his turn in 'sunshine' was great.

btw, this whole film had gone quiet for a minute, and the last time any big news had broke was when the 'spaced' dvd came out. i'd heard a fall 08' start, but they must have meant pre-production. i was panicked that it had fallen into development heck, so i'm too relieved to hear these back-to-back-to-back announcements, and hear of the spring production start.
  • nope
umm i always thought Lucas Lee = Jason Lee...pro skateboarder turned actor?
  • Burt
Micheal Cera lands Mary Elizabeth Winstead? That's believable.
  • TheMarquis
    haha. thetans.

The stills look promising enough, but anyone who's read the comic knows that when the first evil ex appears it goes from dramady to epic hilarious action; the only way I can imagine this transition on screen is in a way similar to that of Hot Fuzz.
  • Lucas Lee? The college heart throb? are you serious

as for the pcitures i wasnt impressed at all...just looks like some fan having his way with photoshop
  • I need to read the comics.
  • More casting.

Not exactly sure how legit it is, but it's all really impressive if it's true. The actors' likeness to their characters is crazy, especially Brandon Routh's (he's actually who I pictured while reading on of the volumes.)
