500 Days of Summer Teaser Trailer

Last week we posted two video clips from Mark Webb’s 500 Days of Summer, which premieres later tonight at the Sundance Film Festival (check back for our take). Fox Searchlight has now released an official teaser trailer, which you can watch after the jump.

The movie’s tagline is “Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t.” The official plot synopsis follows: “This post modern love story is never what we expect it to be — it’s thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn’t quite go where we think it will. When Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer (Zooey Deschanel) dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days “together” to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life.”

A FirstShowing spy who saw an early test screening called the film the best movie he’s seen over the last year. That’s pretty high praise. 500 Days of Summer is one of my most anticipated films of this year’s Sundance film festival. Fox Searchlight is distributing the film, and it seems like any film that mini-major touches (most recently Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler) turns to gold.

500 Days of Summer is scheduled to hit theaters on July 24th 2009.

  • Seems like an alright film. Can't wait to read the review later.
  • That's what I said when TDK came out.
  • That's what Robin said about The Dark Knight when it came out.
  • Why did they have the creepiest guy possible doing the voice over for the trailer!?! That was terrible but the movie still looks really cute.
  • I agree it was creepy, possibly the only thing wrong with the trailer. I thought it sounded like James Earl Jones.
  • edog
Agreed agreed. It didn't need the voiceover at all, but the one it had was more distracting than anything.
  • Brian
    It's Leslie Nielson...and he's not creepy, he's Canadian :)
Neat way to do a trailer, and I never really thought about his voice as a trailer voiceover but it works well! He has a great voice for it.
Movie looks promising...I'm into those kinds of quirky stories. Plus I adore Zooey Deschanel.
  • Wow I didn't even recognize it. I like Leslie Nielson, doesn't work so well as a voice over but he's a funny guy.
  • joshi38
The dialog he had to read was just terrible... of course his monotonous voice didn't help.
  • Agreed...weird. Almost like a creepy version of the guy who narrates Little Children.
  • i agree, the voice over made me not want to watch the rest of the trailer.
  • Russel
Yeah, the voice over threw me. Bad match for an endearingly odd looking romantic comedy (yeah?).

Looking forward to the movie, it'll be one of the ones I'll go to the theatre to see this year or the next.
  • Fir3Wolf
Looks ok though the guy didn't need to say "500 Days of Summer" 500 times.
See what I did there. :P
  • Chelsea
Oh I saw. I saw. (And I agree)
  • Danny
Really lousy trailer. Film could be good.
  • Justin
Actually, with the voice-over and pacing, the trailer felt rather old school to me. Like something out of the late Seventies. Am I crazy? P.S. This will solidify Zooey's position as #1 indie swoon. This movie seems obsessed with her.
  • Bob
You are right about it the voice over sounding like something out of the late seventies; when I saw it, it immediately reminded me of this:

  • Chelsea
I agree as well. Though, it more makes me think of old HORROR trailers, like Last House on the Left, the Shining, and Alien...but whatever.
  • Despite how weird that trailer was, the premise is interesting, the shots look beautiful and Zooey Deschanel is enchanting. Very much looking forward to this.
  • I agree with Justin that the voice over is a bit throwback. I appreciate that for it's uniqueness, I guess, but I'm still not entirely sure how I feel. I'm really looking forward to this movie, as I love both Leavitt and Deschanel. I just hope it's not overly twee, indie-rock-lite fare.
  • I hate Zooey Deschanel's acting since The Happening, but this trailer looks great.!
  • It wasn't her acting that was the problem (See some-guy-named-m-night).
  • Chelsea
She was in a lot of really crappy movies this past year, but I'm sure she'll bounce back.
Must have been too preoccupied with She&Him and her relationship with Ben Gibbard. Her musical accomplishments from the past year make up for it.
  • she was in some crappy movies (even though i thought she was fantastic in "Yesman"). wait, she was dating Ben Gibbard? did not know that. that just makes me like her even more.
  • They're actually engaged! It happened just a few weeks ago. (Also that's me above, I just signed up).
  • now all i want is a musical collaboration between these two. that would be amazing.
  • That's the first thing I thought!
  • dude you're wrong zooey is great actress, it was shamhammer's directing that brought her acting "worserer" than a porno-flicking actor.

hey, anything with joseph gordon-levitt, i'll see. he's a great actor.
  • does anyone know the song to the trailer?
    it sounds very familiar.
  • "The song in question is a remix from Australian band, Temper Trap and the track is called, 'Sweet Disposition'." According to theplaylist (dot) blogspot (dot) com

...and just to get this out in the open. As if I wasn't in love with Zooey already, sweet God! Look at her! So glad THIS is what she's following Yes Man with.

UPDATE: This song isn't available for download ANYWHERE in the US. Those of you in Australia, however, do enjoy. Damn lucky Aussies.
  • saurus
i just bought the song off itunes... looks like it was only recently added. i know what i'll be listening to over my cheerios tomorrow morning
  • max
I really really really loved that trailer.
  • you are very easily entertained. That trailer was one of the worse i have seen in a while. The film looks ok, but the trailer with the narrator was horrible.very bad choice.
  • I disagree, they where clearly going for something different and unusual with Leslie Nelson as the narrator. I thought the trailer was awesome.
  • Robbie Clark
I liked the voice over. Half expected some sort of grindhouse twist to come into play. Also reminded me of the narration in Little Children. All in all this is a showcase of the prince and princess of indie movies which I am very excited about. Any idea on what the song playing is?
  • Yeah, does anyone know what song is playing in the trailer?
  • max
Its 'Sweet Disposition' by The Temper Trap

  • Mr. Pendragon
I liked the old school feel to the trailer. And all of those imaginative/hallucinatory scenes make it look like an intriguing concept.

    4 things:
    1 - i loath the voiceover guy's voice.
2 - been waiting a long time for this one, & it looks perfect.
3 - gordon leavitt should win an award for picking the best roles. this kid has protected his career and acting choices very well since leaving 3rd rock... i realize g.i. joe is probably going to blow, but he gets a pass cuz it shows the inner-geek inside of him having fun with a legendary villian. zooey is great as well, but JGL is one career to watch in awe. i'd love to see him and rian johnson team up again.
  • What an odd trailer. The narrator and the way they kept showing the title card reminded of trailers for exploitation films.

But yeah, the movie looks cute enough.
  • You missed the reply button, it seems.
  • Yeah, you're right, I was thinking that too. I like the retro vibe.
  • Danny
I think this movie looks really good for some reason. Kind of like Garden State 2009.
  • Sauce
I liked it. It looks really good and I like the pairing of those two. Guess we'll have to see. This Marc Webb...a little bit of a nobody. Green Day videos are one thing but...
Same cinematographer as Juno, Eric Steelberg, so it will at minimum look nice. Hmm, and the composer from Little Miss Sunshine. The whole team looks like an indie dream team. Yeah, I think this will work.
  • Sauce
Crap. Wait. Writers have also written Pink Panther 2. Let's hope that's a quick cash grab and not a terrible terrible sign.
  • master dong
man joseph gordon levvit looks like fucking heath ledger ...............if they bring the joker back for another movie......you guys think nolan......i mean the lookout you know ........yeah
  • Shad
If they were going to bring back the joker, they could do a lot worse than joseph gordon levvit for sure, he's shaping up to be an excellent actor. I'm very much against having the joker in the next batman film, but if they were going to do it, levvit would bother me alot less than most actors.
  • gertie wallace
    that....was...pretty annoying...
  • Pat
Zooey Deschanel is the most gorgeous thing on earth. BUS FULLA HER?!
  • joshi38
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has done well for making himself something of an indie star. I've always enjoyed his acting.
