Earlier today, we dared to hope that Fox and Warner Brothers might settle their beef over Watchmen this afternoon. Now, The Hollywood Reporter claims that a settlement has been reached:

Warner Bros. and Fox have resolved their dispute over Watchmen, with the studios scheduled to present the settlement to Judge Gary Feess on Friday morning and request that the case be dismissed. Terms of the agreement will not be disclosed, but it is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film’s box office.

Although Feess originally ruled that Fox retained the rights to at least distribute the film, it will not do so under the terms of the settlement agreement, nor will Fox retain any future rights to the Watchmen property [while Warners issued no comment about the settlement, THR says a Fox spokesman said "no final deal had been reached."]. We’ll see how things play out tomorrow morning, but if everything goes smoothly, it looks like we’ll be able to see Watchmen come March 6th, as we’d always hoped.

With Fox’s lawsuit seemingly over, a number of other questions now emerge. What will become of the relationship between Warner Brothers and producer Larry Gordon? Warners may try to extract reimbursement from Gordon for legal fees incurred during this entire mess. Additionally, with the cost of the film, legal fees, production and marketing, plus the fact that they’re already splitting the distribution of the film with Paramount (and that they co-financed the film with Legendary Pictures), the bigger question is: Will Watchmen be financially successful enough to make it all worth Warner Brothers’ time and money? What do you think?

    Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!
  • I predict this will be a success in the theaters. A success just like "Batman & Robin" was a success.
  • Geist
    Woohoo!!!
  • Calvin
praise the lord!, now give us watchmen please!!! :)
  • ajt
    There is a god
  • No. Just lawyers.
  • Ezekial
I was hoping for a Friedberg-Seltzer Watchmen spoof, but this is alright, too.
  • Fir3Wolf
    Great to hear.
  • John S.
Don't forget, they're already co-distributing the film with Paramount and Legendary Pictures. Counting DC, this film is probably going to have the longest fanfare-logo montage in the history of cinema.
  • Thanks John - published the news as quickly as I could, then I added in those details just now.
  • lancelewis
    hurm... excellent news.
  • Smurfs!
It probably won't be as profitable as other better known comic book properties. It's got a $100 million budget, not counting marketing and legal fees, and I doubt the fan base from the graphic novel grew enough for the film to crack $100 million. Tops, I say, it reaches $150 million.

Remember, if I'm correct, the rule of thumb for a movie to make profit is grossing at least twice its budget.
  • Mark
Yes, rule of thumb is that a movie should gross two times its budget (but internationally!). Of course it depends on the specific movie.
  • *Jumps for joy* Now all I need to know is that the movie doesn't suck. That would be a letdown.
  • Captain Molotov
Kevin Smith likes it. That's a good sign at least.
  • gah
Who cares? I'm with Alan Moore.
  • YES! Also yes I believe WATCHMEN will still be a success for WB. They wont be getting there money back theatrically, but they will on DVD I am sure. They have a big double dip DVD plan so I don't see how they wont still make any money, also they will get money from soundtrack and making of books etc. So it will take them time to make money but they will.
  • Dylan
    Woo hoo!
  • framo
Although I think WB deserves a hell of a lot of credit (and money) for really taking a leap and making the movie, the settlement terms seem to make sense for the fans, the artists who made the film, as well as saving face for both Fox and WB. There may be less money for them, but now there is a possibility of a future.
  • Finally!
  • Sweet mother of god that is music to my ears.
  • at last...
  • Well I'll definitely be going to see it on day 1. Whether it is a huge success like it's expected to be is another story. I hope it does well, in both ticket and DVD/Blu-ray sales. But this was the first step-- actually getting to see the movie. Now let's speak with our money.. assuming Watchmen is all it's cracked up to be. Wow, my comment doesn't really say much; I guess I'm just not sure, haha.
  • Mr. Pendragon
I'm more concerned whether or not it's going to be a good movie, not how much money it makes. I'm sure the multiple DVD versions coming out will make any box office dissapointment moot anyway.
  • They should come out with a "Watchwomen" next.
  • don't give Fox any ideas.
  • Oh, yeah that's the porno version of Watchmen, should be coming out soon.
  • Well that's nice, I still don't think this will be that huge of a movie though.
  • Well that's nice, I still don't think this will be that huge of a movie though at the box office.
  • Finally! I was really worried there wouldn't be a March release.
  • Mecline
    Ho Ho Ho, Merry Watchmen.
  • Zinc
Poor WB, I wonder how much they're going to have to give up to the freeloading Fox...
  • Bob Burnquist VIII
I love how everyone doesn't think Watchmen is going to make money.

That's probably why stores are still sold out of comics nearly everywhere. People buy into this shit, and with the hype surrounding it? It'll make 70 the first weekend. Watch.
  • at least a release looks like it's coming when it's supposed to be... sigh...
  • who cares if it's not financially successful, us fanboys will get to see it. Plus, if it loses money then there won't be any thought of a dreaded sequel.
  • Well the marketing and word of mouth might get this up over 150mil so it may be worth it.
Zach Snyder's graphic novel cred will also bring some $$$$ in
Who thought 300 would be as great as it was and profitable too (early on at least)
  • This lawsuit just solidifies my belief that Watchmen will be one of the greatest films of all time. If you look at the history of some of those most famous of productions such as Star Wars and The Godfather, you will see a pattern of very serious issues occurring. Most people will see this lawsuit as damaging to WB, but in the future people will look back and see this movie as a classic. This event cements that claim, all we have to do is wait for destiny to play itself out.
  • I predict it'll at least make up for it's budget. The thing is I'm not sure what the word of mouth for this film will be. They're advertising it as a superhero flick from the 'visionary' director of 300 and the book itself doesn't have all that much action. Opinion is gonna split 50/50 amongst fanboys. I just don't see it being that big in theaters although it'll clean up in DVD/BD.
  • Moviola
Damn Fox! You had Warner's over the barrel and you didn't... make them release it tomorrow? Agh!
  • i dont care what the settlement was as long as i get to see watchmen on march 6th

hell, id donate my own blood if that would allow me to see this flick. i wouldnt care if the movie was shite or not, i just want to see it. well, i guess i wouldnt be able to enjoy it while passed out from lack of blood...

maybe i should rethink this plan?
  • i have to say, only because i work for a blood bank, that donating blood is more or less painless and only takes 45 minutes. so i don't see why that would be a big deal for you. everyone should donate blood.
  • starscream9289
YES! YES! *grabs oxygen tank* *deep breaths* ahhh.....
  • homer
Sweet merciful crap! THANK YOU JEEBUS!
  • Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes? We do. March 6th bitches!!!
  • On sails the Black Freighter.
  • Good. I still think Fox should burn alive though.
  • This is the only way to avoid a mass riot, therefore settlement reached.
  • All this Settlement business is excellent publicity for this film, its gonna be HUGE.
  • All i care is that i see the movie...if its worth it ill pick it up on blu-ray!
I dont give a rats ass how much money they lose...it will be better if it does bomb:P then theres more to laugh about
  • happy days
