500 Days of Summer Video Clips

On my adventures today, I was also able to secure two video clips from Mark Webb’s 500 Days of Summer.

In the first clip, Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) talks about how his failure in architectural design lead to a job writing greeting cards and we learn Summer’s (Zooey Deschanel) shocking college nickname. And the next clip features a conversation where Summer compares her relationship with Tom to Sid and Nancy.

A FirstShowing spy who saw an early test screening called the film the best movie he’s seen over the last year. That’s pretty high praise. 500 Days of Summer is one of my most anticipated films of this year’s Sundance film festival. Fox Searchlight is distributing the film, and it seems like any film that mini-major touches (most recently Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler) turns to gold. I’m screening the film on Sunday, so check back for my take. But for now, you can watch the two video clips after the jump.

Before you watch the clips, you might want to know what the film is about. The movie’s tagline is “Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t.” The official plot synopsis follows: “This post modern love story is never what we expect it to be — it’s thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn’t quite go where we think it will. When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days “together” to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life.”

500 Days of Summer is scheduled to hit theaters on July 24th 2009.

    I already love this movie.
  • I already love this BLOG!
  • Oi Vey
People say that Katy Perry looks like Zooey, but I think Zooey is way hotter.

Anyway, I'm glad that Zooey is finally in a good movie now (I mean she was in the past); as long as The Happening didn't destory her career she's fine.

It looks pretty good, Still can't believe that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going to be Cobra Commander in that most likely horrible GI Joe movie.
  • i did not know that. i still see him as that dude that isn't Heath Ledger in "10 Things I Hate About You".
  • He was awesome as Brendan Frye in Brick.
  • Did anyone see these two in Manic?

I am really excited about this movie...
  • Bun
YES. Their chemistry in Manic was so fabulous: it made me want more Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoeey Deschanel. Manic made me completely confident that 500 Days of Summer will not lack chemistry. They've already proved it, and spectacularly so.
  • The clips kept my interest. Looks like they have good chemistry. I'll see it.
The most striking thing to me in the clips is actually the choice of what appears to be a fairly universal brown/tan mundane color palette and a kind of prim and proper asymmetrical nature to the production design and wardrobe. Reminds me a bit of a Billy Wilder Apartment throwback. Bland, faceless offices in the big city.
  • Two clips juxtaposed each other beautifully.
  • I still don't understand how movies with a budget over a million make it to Sundance, especially with sizeable stars like Zooey and Gordon-Levitt. It's an INDEPENDENT film festival.
  • Sadly, it hasn't really been an independent festival for years. Doesn't it seem like every year they try and talk about the state of true indie film and their role with it (what they think is a positive role) but they're spinning their wheels and toasting to themselves with glasses of their own piss.
Not to completely knock the fest but seeing the line up this year from an indie standpoint, has me a little disenfranchised... again. Some interesting International entries, though and possibly shorts.

Geoff Gilmore, Sundance's director, did make some interesting comments on the marketing and distribution of independents in his opening speech, but it was really no surprise.
  • Agreed man. I don't see the purpose of Sundance any more. Last year, they had George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead. They had Smart People, starring Meryl Streep, Dennis Quaid and the now bankable star of Ellen Page. In 2006, there was Little Miss Sunshine, a movie with Steve Carrell, who starred in the $100 million hit 40 Year Old Virgin just a year before.

I also hear Adventureland is opening there. I have no idea why - the movie has a set theatrical release. What's the deal?
  • people thought "Juno" was an independent film, but it's not...
  • Guys, an 'independent' film is one that was shot outside of the studio system, regardless of budget size. It's that simple. If you're after small budget film gems, you need to look at underground film festivals.
  • I know that an "independent" film is one shot/funded outside of the studio system, I've worked on plenty of them. And as of late it seems Sundance does not showcase many of those.
  • I know that an "independent" film is one shot/funded outside of the studio system; I've worked on plenty of them. And as of late it seems Sundance does not showcase many of those.
  • I wonder, is that a reflection of Sundance, or an accurate reflection of the quality of the independent films you worked on?? Shooting an indy film doesn't mean sudden appearance at Sundance. The film still has to be GOOD, you see...
  • Again, DIARY OF THE DEAD premiered at Sundance. That wasn't exactly a quality piece. And if Bruce Willis stars in a movie, I'm very sure he can pull strings to get some sort of distribution.

From the official Sundance website, the mission "is a non-profit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences".

And I think that Benu's films not making it into Sundance has NOTHING to do with the quality of his movies. It's because the festival is filled with movies that are basically guaranteed distribution as it is - like this one.
  • It is most likely an accurate reflection of the state of independents as well as Sundance. There is gonna be good stuff and bad and sometimes it is relative to the audience who sees it and likes it or not.

Of course I understand that shooting an indie doesn't mean a sudden appearance at Sundance, let alone any number of fests.
That is naive. I feel a bit insulted that you jumped to such a conclusion.
I don't find it appropriate to bog down this topic with any disagreements or misunderstandings, so I will just finish setting my side of things straight and leave it at that.

Films I have worked were not submitted to Sundance for one reason or another, generally due to deadlines. Some have gone to other fests, others never made it to one. And some of these films turned out better than others, regardless of fest circuits.
  • I agree with you, however sometimes you can still find small budget films at these types of Festivals like sundance. Its pretty much how you said it, Independent Films are done with out Studios and distribution.
  • I'm pretty sure the Star Wars prequels were independently funded, which means they'd be perfectly qualified for Sundance.

In all seriousness, there's independent films by strict definition and then there's the independent films that Sundance was created for. I remember the festival being created to spot new talent, not to let A/B/C list stars play in a sandbox.
  • Seriously? The stars have nothing to do with it. If Bruce Willis takes a pay cut and works on an indy film for a director friend who's trying to get his film off the ground, should that director and his producers be denied entry at Sundance just because it stars Bruce Willis? No. Indy = 'shot without a studio'. Always has been, and that is all Sundance have ever screened, regardless of your nostalgic sentiment which likely dates before the days of internet where Sundance actually were breaking new names in films. Nowadays we know allllll about them online well before they screen, which is probably where the mystic has been slightly lost and hence the birth of your unreasonable resentment.
  • Looks delightfully awkward and these are two of my favorite actors. Good stuff.
  • wow, i guess she does look like Katy Perry, now that i look at her. Zooey is hotter, and has a better name.

she was great in "Elf", and was probably the best part of "Yes Man". we'll just ignore "The Happening"
  • Hahaha this loooks hillarious...ah akward relationnships
  • WHEN HARRY MEETS SALLY for hipsters,i pass
  • Hmnn....doesn't seem too bad so far. I like the music in the second clip.
  • This looks like it could be really good. I really want to see more of Gordon-Leavitt, I think he's a great young actor. And Zooey is, as always, perfectly adorable.
  • This looks neat, and Zooey Deschanel is gorgeous. I'm there.
  • i want to sleep with Joseph Gordon Levitt... he is so droolingly hot... is that even a real word?

    mmmmm
  • kyle
I love Zooey so I will be seeing this.
  • Zooey Deschanel always seems dull and bored in movies. I don't know why people like her. *shrug
  • she's okay.
  • Looks good...plus I love anything Zooey Deschanel is in...except 'The Happening'...fuck that waste of money/time of a movie...
  • Whoa. It's like you read my mind-- Zooey is hot and The Happening was unintentionally hilarious.
  • I thought this was a musical...?
  • Zooey and Perry do look alike which is great as they are both super super hot and seem like cool chicks to hangout with.
  • I will watch anything with the wonderful Zooey in :D
  • Anything with Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel will be great. Both actors by themselves are wonderful. Putting them together can only make things better.
  • i really hate Katy Perry, she needs to be punched in the face.
  • Anybody agree with me when I say Zooey Deschanel is hot?
  • Every time i see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a film, i always think of 3rd Rock, and makes me laugh how he was in it.. But i did like him in the Lookout, i thought that film was great for him.

As for this film, i think im half on the fence with it.
  • killerchopsticks
It's going to be nice to see another JGL film on the big screen. And its even more exciting to see Zoey and Joe together. I remember when they were in Manic and they had such good chemistry and intense scenes together and that was like 9 years ago.
  • Rena
I think hes ready to assume the role of Sid Vicious in their relationship
  • Brad
God I love Zoey Deschanel, this is definitely a must see.
  • skippy
yes, it's nuts that he is Cobra Commander. nuts i tells ya. NUTS
  • BarelyBipedal
I'll watch this, but more for Gordon-Levitt than Z.D. I hate when then first 30 posts for a movie are all about how "hot" and actress is. In most instances I couldn't care less as long as she's the right fit for the role. Z.D. has shown that she has chemistry with Joe (as I like to call him) and that she's adept at subtle delivery of comedy lines(even when her co-stars are slapsticking it up). Joe is the next rising star on the horizon to appear after Ledger. Many say, and I agree, that Ledger passed well before his potential was even close to being reached. Gordon-Levitt has shown in several roles since leaving 3rd Rock that he possesses the depth to become a great actor. For examples check out Brick, Lookout, Stop-Loss, and for the open-minded see his excellent performance in Mysterious Skin. I don't usually go for the rom-com, but this might be one worth watching.

(I have no faith in G.I.Joe. In no part because of J.G.-L., but the entire casting in general. I always thought of the G.I.Joe's as grizzled vets not 20-somethings.
