I’m a firm believer that Rob Cohen’s part three of the Mummy series is the best of the lot of them, and while I know that’s an unpopular opinion I’m slightly mystified as to why. Of course, when it comes to the bird’s eye view, too long spent comparing work by Stephen Sommers and Rob Cohen in a medium that also gave us, oh, say, Terry Gilliam, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock and Werner Herzog is a bit like taking a day trip to the Seaside but staying in the carpark.  In the car.  With a bucket on your head.

According to Production Weekly (which as ever we can’t link to, as it comes subscription only) Rob Cohen is now attached to direct a film about modern day pirates.  The Sea Artist has been scripted by Tony Puryear, a comic book artist and sometime music video director who, over ten years ago, clocked up some raves for an unproduced Buck Rogers screenplay.

While I’m waiting to get a hold of The Sea Artist script myself, I’ve quickly asked around and found that it too is getting a thumbs up from the few who’ve managed to lay hands on it. Modern day piracy is a thrilling milieu, not least because it seems to be making the news with increasing frequency, but also because it carries all of the connotations of ‘pirates’ (ie., ne’er do well criminals who still retain a sort of glamour) with all the connotations of ‘modern day’ (ie., guns and grenades and speedboats and stuff blowing up).  I tried to find a sufficiently large picture with at least some of that vibe for the head of this post… you be the judge of how well I did.

Let me be the first to guess, without any foundation whatsoever, that Vin Diesel will take a part in this one.  Call it a hunch, but I’d put a tenner on it if Ladbrokes were open.

  • ???
All i can say is WOW.....you gave TDK a 2/10 in your site and you think the Mummy 3 is one of the best films of the series. Great picking this guy /film.......
  • I LIKE HIM. I'm going to try to find his review of "Batman & Robin."
  • Jim
That movie fucking sucks. a bag of shit is better than that movie. Do you really like looking at Chris O'Donnel's rubber nipples that much?
  • Rubber nipples..........
  • Jim
find one review that was positive for that stupid movie

Yeah.... um, wow. Still trying to digest that first line. I read it several times hoping I had either suffered some kind of brain hemorrhage, or dyslexia has somehow warped my perceptions beyond all hope of return to normality.

That's like describing Syphilis as 'the best of the sexually transmitted diseases'.
I revoke your film reviewing privileges. Someone please take away this man's keyboard and internet access. You don't get to review anything again. Ever.
  • im interested in the idea, but im not so sure about rob cohen. but who knows, maybe itll be pretty cool

*thumbs up for the word "milieu"

Alright Brendan! always liked Film Ick, and good to see a fellow British guy writing for the site. so i look forward to your posts - loving the car park metaphor.

And The Mummy 3 was awful for (among hundreds of reasons) the moment when yetis scoring a conversion with a baddie. The whole cinema GROANED.
  • Vin Diesel? Rob Cohen? Pirates?...Fast and the Furious on water?...I'll pass on this one...
  • Rom
I don't know. In my view, a modern day pirate movie seems like "drama-ish" territory to me rather than some attempt at an action-adventure flick.
  • FromConcentrate
I happen to enjoy /Film...but The Mummy 3 was one of the worst movies I've ever seen...especially the acting.
  • They made that film it was called THE ISLAND and it starred Michael Caine and David Warner!

    Chuck
  • This sounds interesting...ill keep my head out for updates
  • I was actually wondering yesterday how long it was going to take until someone picked up on the news stories about real life sea piracy that's going on...apparently a group of them drowned and one of the bodies washed up onto the shore with $100,000 cash on it...I think we're going to see a string of these films the same way we see films on the Iraq war...something this brutal and real is hard not to make a subject...although I'd rather see Tony Scott make a movie based on it...

I would again like to welcome Brandon to /Film

  • Thanks for sharing.
  • No problem thanks for taking the time to reply
  • The problem, of course, is that all these "pirates" are crazy muslims who regularly target westeners. Hollywood has difficulty when it comes to showing violence at the hands of muslims. The pirates will probably be turned into Swedes or something ridiculous like that.
  • Jim
    Is it? fucking moron.
  • Yes, it might be. Media types are scared of being beheaded.
  • they could also end up Asian...major pacific pirates are from Asian countries..the muslims are just the ones grabbing the headlines these days
  • hmm interesting. with the new wave of pirates stealing stuff on the seas, this would be interesting. wonder what plot of the movie is. and wonder if it will be operation based movie like body of lies. that would be cool.
  • This could be because post the Danish Cartoon incident, the west is weary of painting bad pictures of Muslims and Islam in general possibly?

In any event, it could be interesting as a decent action flick, will look to hear more.
  • ihopeitwillberatedr
I also wondered when a modern day pirate movie would be made. Would this be the first modern pirate movie? Or are there others that I'm not aware of?
  • Modern Day pirates = potential awesomeness... although It would definitely have to be gritty and I'm not sure if that's Rob Cohen's style.
  • mummythree4life
I cant wait for Mummy 4... in Peru!! Lol the yak yacked!!
  • A modern-day pirate movie needs to be handled with the right kind of grit and brutality to reflect what is really happening out on our seas. Some of the stories are horrifically shocking - it would be a real shame to gloss over them with any kind of Hollywood baste.
  • Like making them white christian guys.
  • I can't wait till they make the Blood Diamond of modern day pirate movies. Actually I can wait.
  • a Rob Cohen project ,is not news worthy, sorry new blogger
  • I like the different kind of spin that Connelly gives to /film.
  • Was this article written by a scrivener. That was a lot of flowery text to slog through for almost no information.
  • Tony
I'm Tony Puryear and I just stumbled into this story. By the way, in addition to the other resume items about me, you might have mentioned that I wrote the 1996 Arnold Schwarzenegger hit Eraser. Thanks.
  • Scott
Ur Tony Puryear, and ur taking time to post on here like a whinny little bitch....pathetic
  • Howard
