Kieran Culkin and Aubrey Plaza Cast in Scott Pilgrim

HitFix is reporting that Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down) has been cast as Wallace Wells in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Culkin will star opposite Michael Cera in the big screen adaptation from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead helmer Edgar Wright.

Also, THR is reporting that Aubrey Plaza has been cast as Julie Powers, the obnoxious on-off-on-again girlfriend of Stephen Stills, the lead singer and guitarist of Scott’s band, Sex Bob-omb. Aubrey is a comedian and improviser from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City. She will make her big screen debut in Judd Apatow’s Funny People and the indie improv comedy Mystery Team which premieres next week at Sundance.

Based on the Oni Press graphic novel Scott Pilgrim Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, written by Bryan Lee O’Malley. 23-year-old Canadian slacker Scott Pilgrim (Cera) must battle and defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends to win the heart of an American delivery girl named Ramona V. Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Wells is Pilgrim’s responsible gay roommate.

Last week, Edgar Wright posted a set photo from the upcoming film on his MySpace page. Sarah(AC) was able to locate the matching photo of the location, which turns out to be the entrance to Scott Pilgrim and Wallace Wells’ house.

Scott Pilgrim was recently ranked 89th on Wizard magazine’s list of the 200 Greatest Comic Characters of All Time. You can preview 23 pages of the graphic novel on ScottPilgrim.com. Production is expected to begin in Spring in Toronto.

Scott Pilgrim

  • nope
scott pilgrim is the best comic ever and george michael and home alones brother are completely wrong for their parts, MAYBE. i dont know, i hope they can be even half as awesome as scott and wallace!!!
  • i've never even heard of this comic and I read a lot of graphic novels... WTF?
  • Chicks like you give women a bad name.

Scott Pilgrim is the funniest series to be published in the comic medium, and I can't think of anyone better than Edgar Wright. Honestly, I got excited the first ten seconds I heard it was becoming a movie, then I felt the ping of disappointment that it would most likely stink to the infinite degree. Then I heard about Wright handling it, and I have full faith in him to churn out a great product. I admit, I have doubts concerning Cera being able to pull out the spastic performance to portray Scott, but maybe he can resist his old-standby of awkward and flat deliveries and pull himself out of that typecast pit he's in.

You have doubts about comic genious Cera, but you apparently have no problem with Kulkin? How odd!

I don't know anything about Kulkin. This story just reminded me about the Scott Pilgrim movie being made, and my doubts concerning the casting. I wouldn't call my not mentioning Kulkin an apparent approval of his casting. I haven't seen anything of his that I can remember, so I can't really judge. Still, I trust Edgar Wright, so here's hoping its good. And I like Michael Cera, I just wish he'd branch out. Still, I wouldn't exactly call him a comic genius.

Fair enough. I personally think Michael Cera has that bumbling doofus thing down to a tee, and that fake audition for Knocked Up (if you ever saw it) was just about the funniest thing ever.
  • nope
yo but Scott ISN'T just a bumbling idiot, he thinks he's really awesome, and he can fight really well, he's just kind of... i don't know, but his personality is not the same as the michael cera typecast.. so cera has to step it up!
  • This guy still gets work? I thought his career began and ended with Home Alone.
  • evanz
    Kieran Kulkin, dumbass.
  • no, that was Macaulay Culkin and he's still acting.. he was really good in Party Monster.
  • Michael Cera grabs my attention not Kieran Culkin. And having Edgar Wright behind this will be excellent.
  • gah
See Igby Goes Down if you doubt this guys ability.
  • yeah, he was really great in that role
  • I just have to say that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is really hot.
  • I agree with you on that one...especially after I saw on 'Death Proof'...
  • Death Proof first and then Die Hard 4 second. Man she looked really good in both of them.
  • evanz
    And Final Destination 2.
  • If only she was in that one. She was actually in part 3. Whoever played her sister in part 3 was pretty hot too.
  • Hmm no interest in this one
  • I've never heard of this graphic novel. I need to look into it.
  • Ahem...

    her seven evil EXES.
  • Shhhh don't spoil it!
  • Hmmmm. Sounds like snother slacker role for Michael Cera, he really seems to be stretching himself as an actor.
  • Sounds really interesting, I'd def watch it...
  • jbq
I hear ya, gangsta, we'll just have to see how it plays out. Not having read the comic, I'll just have to take your word for it that he doesn't fit the part - and it wouldn't be the first time an actor is inappropriately cast.
  • I don't think I'll see this.
  • I still have yet to pick the books up. The artistic style doesn't thrill but I've gotten over it before, and it is Mr. Wright directing so...

On another note, Aubrey Plaza must be really funny or appealing or both, since she's getting a lot of big points work with this, the Office not a spin off and Funny People. Guess I should start taking classes at the Upright Citizen's Brigade.

By the way: Julie Powers is not even playing in Scott's band - she's not in Sex Bob-Omb, but in more successful band known as "The Clash at Demonhead" (yep, just another 8-bit-era reference). Plus, she's not even the lead-singer there. So much for research (you wouldn't even have had to read the comic for that - one short glance at wikipedia would haven been enough)...
  • Tim
Actually, Julie isn't in any bands. She's just Stephen Stills's girlfriend.
  • Carl
Na, you noob - that's Lynette Guycott. So much for wise-cracking and research...
