Cool Stuff: Olly Moss’s Poster Remakes

21-year old UK artist Olly Moss is probably best known for his popular t-shirt designs which have virally spread across the interwebs. You might recognize some of his designs below.

Olly has decided to create a series of movie posters reinterpreted in a kinda minimalistic post modern German-ism style. Six more posters (The Dark Knight, Die Hard, Deer Hunter, Rain Man, The Great Dictator, and American History X) after the jump.

Die Hard

“The posters were made for fun. I love design and I love films so it was an
ideal personal project,” Olly tells /Film. “In most cases I chose popular films with strong scenes or themes that would be immediately recognisable even when represented very simply.”

The Dark Knight: “The silhouette in this poster was absolutely inspired by the intro to the 90s Batman animated series.”

Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator: “I came up with the idea when I was playing around with an idea for a threadless tee based on disguises, and realised that if you used a comb as a mustache you could be mistaken for either Hitler or Chaplain. Then I remembered Chaplain had played a Hitler-like character in The Great Dictator and this reversible poster seemed like a pretty logical extension of the image. ”

American History X

Deer Hunter

Rain Man

Olly Moss has just graduated from University and is currently looking for a full-time design job. “It would actually be great if you could mention this. I might get an offer!” Olly half-joking writes. You can find more of Olly’s work on Ollymoss.com. Thanks to GramHart for help on this story and to /Film reader Max C for the tip.

Very inspiring. American History X one is the best IMO. I just watched a crazy video blog about Tony kaye - what a character.. http://www.youtube.com/user/borkowskipr#p/c/7FC...

This guy is brilliant. Love "The Deer Hunter"!
  • I must say these are really wel done. But to be honest, some of them only work after you've seen the movie. If you look at the Deer Hunter f.e.; if you haven't seen the movie it doesn't tell you anything.
But anyhow the design is very well done.
  • Olly Moss is brilliant. If he continues work like this he could certainly be the next design super star.
  • slacker
the great dictator one was just ripped off from an ad for hats.
  • NorwegianBlue102
I dislike the american history x one. What do you have against Denmark anyways? :)
  • The Rain Man posted is the best poster I've seen so far this year.
  • BusSeason is on the right track. Most of these posters, while clever and visually elegant, are heavily dependent on prior knowledge.

More over, people go to the movies to see movie stars. that's why stars get paid so much, and that's why they're on the posters.
  • Most artists today try to over complicate ideas. It great to see simple graphics that are so well done.
  • Absolutely brilliant - I have to pass this around!
  • BunSeason
Are these effective posters for people who haven't seen the movies, though? I love them - they are clever and cool looking - but movie posters also have to draw in the uninitiated.
  • wow these are really cool. i would love to get my hands on all these...
  • Exactly.
  • There are all sorts of movies I don't mention.
  • I dunno i didnt really enjoy these photos! It sounds like its just me! But fantastic work anyway
  • smallerdemon
There very much remind me of the great Saul Bass movie posters: http://www.saul-bass.com/
  • Bobbio
    But better!
  • Love the indy one with the grail!
  • Jimmy Mac
But would you go and see any of the films after seeing these posters?
  • sproks
Love the Great Dictator poster. I actually got up out of my seat and flipped my head upside down to look at it. Would need to find a way to mount it so you can spin it: Charlie, Hitler, Charlie, Hitler.
  • Yup Deer Hunter and Die Hard stand out in capturing the themes/mood of the films in an astonishingly simple way.
They all are really something though with their worn crafted look and minimalism, kind of exudes an Eastern European arthouse vibe circa 1966.
Olly, if I had a job to give, you'd get it.
  • wow these are greats, i stared at the great dictator for a good few minutes before I saw the bottom black design was his body and finally saw the while thing
  • Bobbio
You got that the "bottom black design" is Chaplain's hat, right? And it's really about whichever way you flip the poster the mustache fits?
  • starscream9289
Took me a while to figure out that the Indy poster was one of those optical illusion images. TDK poster has more of a Batman Begins feel.
  • Connor F
The Deer Hunter poster is the most powerful one of the bunch
  • Bull
Agreed. I would buy that poster. Tell him to sell it to me.
  • tmg
    he should apply at fabrica
  • Does anyone else agree with me that there is nothing special about The Dark Knight poster?
  • joshi38
Yes, I was kind of expecting some form of reference to the film.

That said, Batman as a character is more iconic than TDK itself, so it would be difficult to do a poster that paid enough homage to the film without taking away from the character as a whole.
  • Yeah I guess you're right and maybe the artist just wanted to do a poster of Batman the character known as The Dark Knight and not of the movie that came out a few months ago.
  • You're right: There is nothing special about The Dark Knight.
  • Wow Thanks!
  • I love these! Die Hard and Rain Man are my favs. This guy rules.
  • Too cool, the Rain Man was awesome...
  • Ooooooh I wants that Deer Hunter one...
  • Dan
Those are awesome...Deer Hunter and American History X rock
  • Guest
This boy is set for life. Fantastic work.
  • I love the AHX poster... that's one of my fave movies. the vintage Batman poster is just so cool.
  • joshi38
I've been trying to get my hands on this guys Spoiler T-Shirt for a while now to no avail, it always seems to be sold out.

I do love his work here though. The ideas are great.
  • BBooms
I like all of them except for the Dark Knight one. Should've referenced the Joker.
  • The Burg
    the guy is a genius
deserves to have a job more than most people who can't even do theirs properly
  • These are all great. I'm especially impressed by The Great Dictator and American History X.
  • The "Die Hard" and "The Deer Hunter" ones are the best to me.

    These arent for sale rite...?
  • Chad
I would purchase that Dark Knight poster in a heartbeat.
  • i love his work
  • All the posters are wonderful. I'm in love with the Deer Hunter one, that's one of the best posters I have ever seen.
  • chonebone
    i completely agree.
  • The great dictator one is pretty cool, flipped upside down
  • We need one for "Batman & Robin."
