Michael Bay vs. McG

Last week, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen director Michael Bay took a shot at McG in a note on his official online website:

“We’ve seen the great year end movies, and watched the upcoming clips of the upcoming summer fare. We’ve seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads. Please, come on.”

Of course, Bay is referring to the gigantic robot terminator machines called Harvesters which have been shown in the movie trailers for Terminator Salvation. During a special New York City presentation, McG responded to Bay’s jab by stating the obvious — Michael Bay didn’t invent giant robots.

Here’s the quote, thanks to Sara from Comcast:

It bothers me to tell you the truth. Ultimately, our large robots have nothing to do with the Transformers robots,” McG said. “I say with respect, giant robots have been the theme of film for a real long time. So we want to do everything we can to create separation. Our film’s about T-800s and the Marcus character and the Connor character, and this, that, and the other. So, to have people have a problem with that wouldn’t be working for us so we want to make sure there’s separation.”

I say, lets forgo all this talking and settle this the right way - in the ring - Bay vs. McG.

The look of Bay's Transformers is clearly based more on Terminators then The Transformers cartoon or toys from the 80's.

The Harvester (Terminator 4) is like the large Hunter Killer-Tanks of the first Terminator. http://terminator.wikia.com/wiki/HK-Tank
The Harvester is like a non-Humanoid Hunter Killer cross with a Humanoid Hunter Killer. The Moto-Terminator is fitting with evolution of non-Humanoid Hunter Killer.
The Terminator series has had super large robots since the first film back in 1984.

Bay stole from Terminator's Ecoskeletal look and now like the punk that he is bitchy about Terminator 4 is stealing from him. FU Michael Bay.

Michael Bay has make 17 bad films.
Joseph McGinty Nichol aka McG on the other hand has only made 3 bad films.

    Michael Bay is a F____ing lame A__ F____.
Michael Bay needs to be kick out of hollywood.
  • i bet this has all been taken out of context. They are 2 different films, and only have robots to tie them together. Each film will be good in its own way, however i think Terminator will come out on top because of its better script work. Michael Bay is no Boss Man, he just wants people to understand that he likes it BIG!
  • That's what she said.

Well, Transformers 2 will focus heavily on the dreaded "shakycam," explosions, Megan Fox, some more explosions, Megan Fox. And Terminator: Salvation will actually have a script that calls for character development, clearly seeing the robots/androids and not making out on top of robots. Though I am still going to watch both, I'm probably just going to enjoy Terminator more.
  • Who wouldn't love Terminator more? I will probably watch both and see what happens.
  • Megan Fox does somewhat count for extra points towards TF2, then again, Terminator Salvation has Bryce Dallas Howard, who is pretty amazing as well

  • Hot chick in an action film? or a good actor...
  • hot chick.
  • But only robot chicks.
  • I think they'll have Arcee the girl transformer on this one.
  • that WOULD be a bonus...
  • I see no evidence of character development being any better in Salvation. Though I hope you are right.
  • Palmer
Well, you do get to see John Connor slowly moving from being a "grunt" in the human resistance to becoming the prophesied savior of humanity. And I guess stuff about self doubt about his ability to save mankind.
  • in Transformers 3, Megan Fox will be naked.
  • I'll agree by saying that these two films are different altogether. Transformers is about the robots and how they can save us. Terminator is about them trying to kill us all.
  • Exactly
  • I enjoyed Transformers, but Michael Bay is acting like he invented giant robots - on top of explosions. I'll take character development (something that was missing from Transformers) over a 10 minute scene that leads to a masturbation joke any day.
  • Fanboys don't want character development.
  • I enjoyed transformers and i will be seing transformers 2...
  • I love Bay's reaction. It just further proves that the "cool stuff" is his only real reason to make the movie, and the human quality doesn't come into play until much, much later.

Terminator beats the everloving shit out of Transformers.
  • i'm pretty sure michael bay did invent giant robots
  • well we all agree on that :P
  • I do think the motorcycle bikes are a little odd.
I understand the T-series looking human but whats with a bike?! Could at least hover or something than have wheels!

Don't worry Michael Bay! I'm on your side! You are getting ripped off here! Just like that time Gus Van Sant totally stole your idea and cast Sean Connery as a grizzled old dude with a beard!

Or like that time that motherfucker Morgan Freeman was all like, "I hear Michael Bay is making a movie about an asteroid, he seems to be on his game, get me in a movie about an asteroid!"

You are the driving force behind this industry, and people are going to keep trying to bring you down by stealing your ideas that you got from action figures. Please continue to breathe originality into this stagnant medium.
  • Love that robot.
  • Bay is such a douche bag, McG makes terrible movies, so far anyway. I don't know who's side to take on this one.
  • well usualy its who makes the better movies
  • It's basically a coin flip with these 2.
  • Who wants to bet Transformers 2 will have the following: Dramatic shots of army machinery or robots in front of a huge sunset, slo-mo action shots, explosions and explosions, slo mo shot of the american flag, giant robots hip to pop culture, and self-indulgent one liners from extras (example, "this is so much better than Armageddon!"). You go Michael Bay!!!

Come on, let's be reasonable here!

To have giant robots in a Terminator film is just bullshit. Call them Harvester or whatever, they are as dumb an idea as motorcycle robots. Just stupid. McG must be a genius to pull this off.

CAUSE IT'S A FUCKING DUMB IDEA!

And I don't even like Michael Bay anymore, but he has a point. There is no logical explanation to involve giant robots in a Terminator film unless you look at the success of Transformers. (And maybe the 3rd Matrix, Aliens, Mechas etc. - but people forget those so fast)
  • Bobbio
Unless you think that Skynet wouldn't want or have any uses for giant robots or motorcycle robots you really can't say anything about the idea being stupid. In the end, Skynet probably WOULD want those things, and so they should be included.
  • Precisely. Skynet wants to cause the swift and speedy destruction of humanity. What can help ease that along? GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS OF COURSE!
  • Agreed. No one would mistake a 10-story tall terminator for a human. Not even in the future.
  • Also I am not really looking forward to Transformers 2, its like WOLVERINE to me- I am not really looking forward to it but I know I will be there opening day.
  • I'd eat a boiled boot before I sit through another McG movie.
  • why doesn't Bay have a pop at Pixar ... Wall-E could take down Prime anyday!
  • Only at the box office.
  • Go McG! I am personally starting to come around that T4 will be good and even though I hated the Charlie's Angels films I did like We Are Marshall. I really liked the trailer. I also really liked the trailers but I still wish it would be R. Also I liked Transformers, it was popcorn fun but nothing special. I really didn't like the end battle and it didn't make any sense why they would take the cube to a major city knowing there will be a fight over it. The only human connection I had to it was Shia but he wasn't believable in the last 40 minutes.

    i'm not watching transformers.
  • Fight ! and kill each other !
  • ohhh that's why the strange awkward silence after someone asked if McG was worried about competing with Transformers tonight at the NYC Terminator event....interesting. More on the event here:

Actually Michael Bay DID invent giant robots.

That's the theme of the second movie.
  • Seth
Everyone knows that Michael Bay went back in time and fucked McG's mother.

    Michael Bay INVENTED McG.
  • Haa you forgot that michael bay invented explosions as well
  • Michael Bay = Skynet
  • Yeah cmon Bay no need to get jealous of the new terminator movie!
  • come on, this is exactly why we love Bay. Big dumb comments and big dumb movies. God bless im.
  • I dislike dumb people/movies.
  • Aren't you just so edgy. Run along now, rebel, watch a smart movie or have a chat with a "smart" person. I'm going to watch a Michael Bay because it does exactly what it was ment to do it's something "Be fucking fun!".
  • Hm, very funny that you feel so affected by my comment. But hey, If the shoe fits, wear it.
