Sam Raimi Wants Morbius in Spider-Man 4

Sam Raimi revealed his pick for the villain for Spider-Man 4 in the latest issue of Empire Magazine.

“I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius,” said Raimi. “He’s really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural.”

As /Film reader Christopher M (who submitted the story) points out, it might make sense to use him along with The Lizard since both characters “use the same technology but have different animals involved in their research… one having blended with a lizard the other a vampire bat.” What do you think?

  • sam raimi could take a poop in bag and it would turn out better than his version of venom, but whatever...i'm not bitter. thanks, sam.
  • I'll roll with this simply because Raimi is more inclined to go "Evil Dead" on it.
  • exactly. how good was doc ock's 'birth' in spidey 2!
  • Spidey fighting a bat?! Where does the fight takes place? In the box office?
  • Sounds very Evil Dead to me.
  • i would love for this to happen, even though i'm not a major morbius or vampire fan by any means. it would go to show that the superhero movie can transcend genre, which hasn't really been done with one of the mainstream characters yet
  • Dr.Slump
than blade can make a cameo for crossover story haha!! O_o
  • if he's going to be in it then they should continue with the 2 film arc. Would work perfectly, start off with Conners becoming the lizard but Morbius, not knowing that conners was transforming, steal the technology to further his own research and then transforming himself at the end of movie 1 leading right into movie 2. Since they would be filmed back to back I think that would keep Raimi happy because it would give him time to establish Morbius like he has already done with Dr. Conners
  • acutally there was a deleted scene in Blade that featured Morbuis but was cut for time...he was going to be set up as the villain in Blade 2 but del Toro went another direction....which I think was best because I loved his sequel...perhaps they never had the rights to use the character and he fell into the Spider-Man universe

I really hope that Spidey 4 makes up for the last one. It was such a let down (as was X3). I've been hoping the villeins would be either Lizard, Kraven, Electro or Vulture. I did read awhile back that they were hoping to do 4+5 back to back so maybe all 4 of them could work.
Not really sure of this whole Vampire idea, it has kind of been done to death at the moment.
  • Andrew
I've always been a fan of Morbius and would love to see him on the big screen, but I agree that the whole vampire thing has been over done. I think Karven would be a much more exciting villian and would fit with the story well. I just hope they make up for the shitiness of the past two movies. I might think twice before seeing the fourth.

Moribus, Lizard, Rhino, Vulture, Black Cat, and Kraven - SINISTER 6!!!
  • Mag
    Dump Raimi
  • cdub
They should cast Johnny Depp and sell out just like Iron man is? This movie is going to suck
  • brody
Spiderman / Underworld 4...............great..................................my god they are now ruining this franchise.
  • John
They should only have one villain though. The third film was so convoluted partly because it had too many characters to focus on.
  • John
    NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

that would be supremely lame!! Vemon stank up the 3rd film! use the classic vilians! COME ON SAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  • I can't wait till they kill Mary-Jane or Peter Parker...Spiderman 3 still angers me to this day...
  • You want Morbius...i want you off the franchise...after the third shocking movie
  • beevbo
    No! No dual villians!
  • No more spiderman!
  • edog
Vampires are 2008. Give us Kraven! Borrow liberally from "The Last Hunt" storyline.

I also agree on the single villain. The first two films were better focused for just that reason. I think "Batman Returns" is the only comic book film to satisfactorily pulled off a multi-villain film (Penguin, Catwoman, and Christopher Walken). In every other instance, one of the villains gets the short shrift (Venom in SM3) or prematurely executed (2 Face in The Dark Knight).

Maybe him and EMO Peter Parker can have a dance off battle in an alleyway (ala west side story)? Can't be worse than #3
  • you stole my reply outta my mouth lmao
  • hahaha this is awesome
  • Please tell me someone's already made a joke about Twilight and Spider-man. Please.

this is a good pick for villans, i like it better then the carnage idea, they should save him for the last movie i think. this is a unique pick.
  • Sound alright I guess. Maybe they're trying to cash in on the whole vampire craze that's been going around lately.
  • George Kaplan
Did Raimi really say this was his pick for the movie, or that he just likes the character in the comics?
  • not bad i suppose sounds intresting
  • k dog
If Morbius is in it then Blade (W.S.) should have a part in it to
  • Tap Zepol
I have a love/hate relationship with this idea. If this is the only person Spidey is fighting against, then no, I dislike it, he's not a good enough villain in my eyes. But he's one of the more realistic villains (if that even matters after the giant sand monster) to bring to screen (which makes me happy, because I didn't like the giant sand monster), but considering he's a vampire, that's saying something. I don't know. I always thought the obvious choice if they were going down the whole two-villains one-movie route would be Lizard and Kraven with the whole hunter and beast angle both characters share in their own unique way. Honestly though, I can think of worse villains to use, like Rhino. But I can also think of better ones, like a re-imagined Mysterio or a non-Daredevil version of the Kingpin or the naive, inferiority-complex driven Electro. As long as he's not alone, Morbius would be alright. I hope that they kinda stop using team-ups, I find that makes for a lesser, more watered-down, muddled movie, unless one of them is just a side villain, like Scarecrow in Batman Begins.

That said, I wish there was more to the quote, because it just sounds like he is talking off the top of his head about what his favorite villain is (He hates Venom and he still ended up in part 3 [poorly done, which goes to show you should never force an artist to do something that he or she doesn't wanna do]) so this might have nothing to do with part 4, and I actually have my fictional money on that being the more likely case. In fact, I'd put my money on Lizard with a possibility of Kraven for part four, unless there IS more to the quote that directly says that's the one he chose.

i love the idea of morbius joining the list of super villains in the up coming spider man be cause as comic readers already know when morbius was introduced in the series so was fellow crime fighter vampire slayer blade and the idea of the two chance meeting gives me the chills

Any Director who didn't like Venom never should have been hired. A true Spider-Man fan considers Venom Spider-Man's greatest enemy.

well (and this is KEY): we saw what happened when a character was forced onto raimi - eddie brock/venom - so i suppose i'd like to see us get back to a place where raimi is pleased on all fronts.

the only reservations i have, come because i'm a little vamped out. between true blood, twilight, underworld, 30 days of night (comics & film), even i am legend toed the line, and all the other vampires we've been seeing lately - i feel like i've seen enough of the blood suckers. chris m is absolutely right, in saying the logistics of the story between the lizard and the bat make a lot of sense...so that feels right. i guess i'll just have to let this one resonate and see what happens.

i really just want to see a very dramatic story this time around. not a recreation of SM2 (which the entire sandman story was attempting), but some compelling ups and downs that cannot be placed in black and white categories - which has always been the heart of the peter parker lore. of course it all needs to be mixed in with killer superhero brawls, because say what you will about SM3, but raimi knows how to film a brutal ass fight. i felt every single punch that was thrown in the fights between peter & harry - watch it again if you don't believe me, they are so fucking raw!

whatever the case, once this gets rolling it'll be the new 'TDK' for me: i'll be anxiety stricken and chomping at the fucking bit to get any juicy details that exist!

On one hand the comic book fans might think this is cool because they are familar with the character and unlike Venom, this is someone who Rami wants in the movie.

The problem is, the rest of the fanbase is going to assume the already oversaturated, run-its-course franchise has jumped the proverbial shark by adding vampires into the story. Plus its not like you'll see a Morbius from the 80s/90s but the earlier incarnations of Rami's youth. Will this generation of the fanbase vibe with it?
  • just the fact that raimi wants him in the movie and avi arad isn't around to cajole him into doing something else is a blessing
  • You mean "nuked the proverbial fridge" by adding vampires to the story. And yes, this is exactly what I would think. There's only so many hours I can spend watching Peter Parker struggle with the hero he needs to be while saving innocent lives and fighting baddies before zzzzzzzz
  • Fanbase? No idea. All I know is that Raimi should do good with adding a bit of campy horror to the franchise. I think the way to go with this one is to just not give a fuck what anybody thinks and just make the most ridiculous big budget movie he can. I'm talking Peter Parker taking the symbiote and dancing down the street stilly. But for the whole movie. And with vampires.
  • Didn't already make an over-the-top ridiculous movie with the last one? But I suppose the franchise could go lower. Look at what The Spirit achieved.
  • I never liked Spiderman to begin with. We really need more of these films?
  • Panda
NOOOOOOOOO, have someone like the vulture, rhino, or the hunter.
  • we'll get them eventually, i'm sure :)
  • Jagil
As long as the Lizard is in too....
  • HImme
I agree with jason B. I think Raimi direct much better fight scenes than Cris Nolan.
  • DREW
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
  • I think they should stop making (shitty) Spiderman movies. Like 2 movies ago.
  • Amen, brother.
  • k-man
    First intelligent post I've seen.
