Netflix and Film Independent Seek the Next Great Independent Filmmaker
‘Netflix FIND Your Voice Film Competition’ will Award more than $350,000 in Cash and Production Help to Make and Distribute the Winner’s Film
Josh Brolin Serves as Honorary Chair and Panel Judge

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 — Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world’s largest online movie rental service, and Film Independent (FIND), the not-for-profit arts organization that produces the Independent Sprit Awards, Los Angeles Film Festival and over 250 hours of film education programming annually, today announced that they are joining forces to discover the next great independent filmmaker. The “Netflix FIND Your Voice Film Competition” will award one aspiring filmmaker the means, guidance and resources to make a full-length, narrative film. Actor and director Josh Brolin will serve as honorary chair and panel judge and the winner’s film will be given distribution online at Netflix.

The winner of the competition, who will own all rights to his or her film, will be determined between now and July 2009. In addition to production resources needed to make the film, the winner will receive a $150,000 cash production grant funded by Netflix. Film Independent will run the competition, provide advisement and mentorship to the winning filmmaker throughout the production of the film and will also screen the winner’s movie at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

“Netflix is all about connecting people with movies they’ll love, and a large part of that mission has been about finding just the right audience for films that otherwise would have had real challenges finding a market,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. “The ‘Netflix FIND Your Voice Film Competition’ is a natural extension of what we do and the perfect platform to help budding filmmakers create compelling content through a supportive and educational process.”

“As an organization dedicated to supporting a community of artists who embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision, we are happy to provide such direct and tangible support for a new and original voice in filmmaking,” said Dawn Hudson, executive director, FIND. “We are proud to partner with Netflix, who support independent filmmakers in every way.”

The competition is a three-stage process:

– From today until February 9th, the competition will accept applications from aspiring filmmakers at http://www.netflix.com/findyourvoice.

– Film Independent will review and evaluate all submissions to select 10 semi-finalists, who will be asked to submit a two-to-three-minute video short related to the proposed program. The 10 semi-finalist video shorts will be uploaded to the competition Web site on June 5, 2009 and the videos will then be open to voting by the general public through July 5, 2009.

– Five finalists will be determined by the video shorts receiving the most online votes. The winner of “Netflix FIND Your Voice Competition” will be selected from among the five finalists by a panel of judges consisting of independent film professionals, chaired by Mr. Brolin.

As part of the grand prize, the winner will also receive a four-week camera package donated by Panavision, 25,000 feet of Kodak Color Negative Film or 10,000 feet of Kodak Color Intermediate Film donated by Eastman Kodak Company, up to $75,000 in dailies and prints donated by Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, and a digital intermediate package with a maximum value of $150,000 provided by EFILM(R) Hollywood, a division of Deluxe.

First-time filmmakers who have not yet created and publicly screened a full-length narrative feature film of 70 minutes or more are eligible. There is no fee to apply to the competition, but a maximum of only 2,000 submissions will be accepted. Full eligibility requirements, evaluation criteria and an entry application can be found online at http://www.netflix.com/findyourvoice.

  • I'd bet that Netflix will have their own production studio before too long.
  • This is amazing that they are doing this. A great way for people to discover fresh moviemakers with ORIGINAL ideas, which is lacking in Hollywood at the moment.
  • I am definitely entering this. already submitting my information.
  • Brian Rodden
I'm in. Now I need to come up with a brillant movie idea...
  • theaveragedave
I just read the PDF file that contains the rules of submission and actual making of the film.

The sponsor "reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Contest, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Contest, as determined by Sponsor in its sole
    discretion."

Translation: "if it turns out you don't know shit about filmmaking, we can pretend this thing never happened."

Time to dust off some old scripts and pitches. I could use 150,000 dollars.
  • It won't let me click the "enter now" button.

    Netflix hates Mac so much.
  • Jacobi
Thanks for posting this BEFORE the first day for submissions. The extra time really lets potential contestants get their stuff organized. It especially helps when they're only accepting the FIRST 2000 SUBMISSIONS.

Come on guys. You might as well not have posted this at all.
  • Fun fact: I applied a few hours after Pete posted this and I was only the 165th person to enter (based on my application number). If you read this post relatively soon after it went up, you'd have plenty of a chance to get in to the contest.

And if anyone tries to click the "Enter Now" button and get nothing (happened to me), just click "Application" in the upper right and then click "Get Started".

Brolin's a judge? I guess we can increase our odds of winning by putting our effort into blame-America-first / liberal submissions.
  • bmn
    I bet you can!
  • TheMarquis
Yeah. I totally agree. Peter held this one back to spite everyone. He should've not posted it at all, so that the thousands of people reading this would have no idea that it was happening. I mean, jeez, the deadline is a month away! There's no way i can do a little bit of work and hit a button in that time!

Chill the hell out. Thanks, Peter and Co.
  • Haha its not just netflix...
  • Im guessing this is only available within north america?
  • Mandy
Did anyone read the sample application? My Kid Brother. ha.
  • Dale Kurt
It's almost at 1,000 entries. They'll hit 2,000 by the end of the weekend for sure.
  • Oh step off, it's not like /Film is withoutabox.com. If you're that keen or serious, you would have known about this way in advance of it being posted here. Plus, I think Peter posted it more as an interesting news story than an open call for entries.
  • How nice of Netflix to do something like this. If I were into the movie making business, I would definitely have jumped at this opportunity.
  • Curious to see if this is a one-off marketing gimmick or a serious new direction for Netflix.
  • Matt
Thanks for the heads up on this Peter. I just submitted my entry (#346) and I wouldn't have known about it without Slashfilm.

Just heard about this today. I submitted at 6pm and was applicant 1912. Does this mean they're all filled up by now?
