The last two Harry Potter films were rated PG-13, which makes sense because the books got darker as Harry and friends got older. In a move that has shocked some fans, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince has been given a PG-Rating, for ‘For scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality’. It’s been a few years but I don’t remember the book being all that violent or edgy in the first place. However, I cant imagine  the seventh book to getting anything less than a PG-13.

RopesofSilicon is also reporting that the Watchmen spin-off animated movie Tales of the Black Freighter has already been given an R-Rating by the MPAA for Violent and Grisly Images. We expected nothing less.

  • I'm not a fan of books and haven't read any of them, thus my comment probably lacks a certain sense of validity compared to others, but the first three films were all 'PG' in the USA and UK, and they all turned out as fine, enjoyable films. However this seems another ploy by the studio's to get as many of the under-12 Harry Potter demographic in the cinema as possible to raise the financial gain of the film.
  • I see the 6th Harry Potter to be nothing but a "lead into" the final two films.

This is bad news. Half-Blood Prince was quite dark and had some real creepy and dark stuff in it. Stuff that was pretty integral to the story. Without giving anything away I'm thinking of a moment when blood literally pours out of someone's chest. If the rating was going to change in the last few movies it should be to R, not PG. I understand they wanna make a buck or two on this, but they might just be screwing up the conclusion to a great story that was looking like it might be a great movie series.
  • that's what i always saw this book as.

The first three films did not have nearly the same subject matter. The books got darker and more violent as the series progressed. There was purpose in it and the movies should reflect that same trend. Books 5-7 really aren't meant for anyone under a high school age and I don't think maintaining a PG-13 rating is going to hurt the movie's take at all. The last two did just fine after all.

Ok....I just finished reading Half Blood Prince and I plan on finishing the Deathly Hallows today. HBP was very dark and I was actually wondering how they were gonna pull off some of the scenes from the book in the movie without being too graphic. I don't know what to think about this. Maybe this is why the release has been delayed so long? Regardless, I sure am glad that I started reading the books as I don't see how they can manage a PG witout removing some important and interesting stuff.

Im no expert on the MPAA, but maybe the director can add some darker material in reshoots and resubmit the film for a PG-13. or maybe he can just ask for one. lol
  • jake
i mean its still another six months until its official release. a lot can happen: the film may be resubmitted, new footage may be added, etc.

I've read the books, and I remember in this one, a spell that Harry uses slashes Malfoy to ribbons. PG!? No. They've done this for the same reason they switched the release date - they want to make it more marketable; bring in more audiences in fear of losing money due to the fact that the BOOKS are no longer being released.

could this be pg in the like how prince Caspian was pg with beheading and all?

If they cut the battle from the end for the theatrical release, I'm done. I think Yates did a terrible job on the 5th one, it felt so rushed and disconnected. I gave him another chance, but the needless delay, PG rating and final act being cut? NO THANK YOU. If they wanted a PG rating to get kids into theaters, that's just stupid. Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix both had PG-13 ratings. The book was far from a children's book and the movie shouldn't be different.

Christ guys, use your brains for once. The film wasn't made with a PG rating intention in mind, as WB themselves stated when they screened the movie back in September, the film was aiming for a PG-13 rating. This is most likely a financial decision (parents will bring their younger children to see a PG Potter film than a PG-13 one, this will also cause a backlash from moms after the movie is released when they say they thought the film was going to be less graphic, not more). For a film series that prides itself as getting darker and more violent with each installment, do you people seriously think they would try to bring it down to PG level again (even with the marketing showing this as a more mature film)? This is the MPAA, not the content of the film itself, that's in question.

And Yates did a terrific job on Order of the Phoenix, the flaws of that film were more to do with studio interference than with the filmmakers themselves.
  • I thought that the Order was the second best Potter film next to Azkaban.
  • Wow this is really gonna suck. How is this movie not PG13?
  • This is where the series is supposed to be at it's darkest, most gruesome point!

Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck!!!!!
  • WHAT PG? Serious? but theres so much this *spolier* happens and then *spolier* happens and so which makes *spoiler*!! PG? Serious?

Cmon warner brothers...the series in the books AND the movies are meant to get darker as they go. Lord V.. i mean he-who-must-not-be-name is kicking ass at this time!! WE WANT BLOOD WE WANT GORE!!!
  • If you want all that. Read the books.
The Half-blood prince was the best in the series in my opinion, and it was pretty dark and bloody. PG-13 would've made sense.
  • Half Blood Prince was an angsty teen relationship drama up until the last ten chapters where it suddenly decided to get serious and pumped out some solid material.
  • I totally agree. Most of 1/2 Blood Prince was like a teen sex comedy minus the sex. The end was the only thing that moved the overall story along, if they cut the battle, I would expect this movie to be the worst of the series so far. (Not Spirit bad, mind you, just the worst one in a strong series)
  • People who went to test screenings of the film have said they removed the battle at Hogwarts at the end, thus explaining the PG rating. It's a shame because that's the scene I wanted to see most in this movie...
  • Do you have the link for that
  • Oh forget to add the link I found, here you go Skyy

Apparently the battle was taken out because they wanted to avoid repetition, whatever that means.
  • The repetition would have to be the fact that the 8th film will most likely be ENTIRELY a battle at Hogwarts.
  • They cut out the battle? That is the stupidest thing I have heard yet. Wasnt that an important part in the whole someone dies part? So basically there rewriting the ending to make the death scene be lighter? Ugh!

PG just doesnt make sense to me, you have the battle with Dumbledore/Harry verses the zombie things, which im assuming will be shrunk to a min or 2 of them running away. And as someone said below, in the book theres the one spell that Harry uses and it slashes Malfoy up. I guess we can expect that not to be in here.

I guess all this means I better lower my expectations by a lot or Im most likely will be disappointed.
  • NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF??!?!? The battle at the end would have been awesome! When I read the book I was imagining it in movie-form the whole time! DAMN YOU PG RATINGS!!!!!
  • oh shit. they fucked it up.
  • Dylan
They're pretty close for me, but I find myself preferring OOTP.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
    and
    YESSSSSSS!!!!
  • Ditto.
  • I am highly disappointed in every Harry potter Movie since Chamber of Secrets. The acting and characters are fine but the scripts and story all suck. The only reason I bothered to see the last two was they were the second feature at the drive in and I could drink beer, stretch out, and fall asleep if the notion came to me while stretched out in the back of the truck.
  • Sounds about right for both movies.
  • Harry's a Pothead & The Sorcerer's Stoned.
