This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Unrated Edition)
One of my top ten favorite movies of ‘08, Pineapple Express manages to effortlessly combine old school action and Apatow-style comedy to hilarious effect. The excellent acting and directing make sure of this, with Seth Rogen and James Franco narrowing the gap on Cheech and Chong for the best stoner duo, and acclaimed indie director David Gordon Green maintaining a gritty intimacy that helps anchor the film to reality. This is definitely one I’ll be watching again and again.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc includes a cast/filmmaker audio commentary, deleted and extended scenes, and a gag reel. The two-disc includes everything on the single-disc, along with rehearsal footage, the first table read, featurettes (Joe Lo Truglio’s Art of the Social Butterfly, Jonah Hill on Set, Stuntmaster Ken Jeong, Injury Report, Red and Stormy’s Guide to Marriage), and raw footage.

THE WACKNESS
The Wackness is probably the best film of 2008 that nobody saw, offering an extremely well-crafted and engaging coming-of-age tale about a drug-dealing New York City teen’s last summer before college. It also doubles as a love note to the ’90s. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend that you do.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Audio commentary with writer/director Jonathan Levine and actor Josh Peck, featurettes (Keeping it Real: A Day in the Life of Writer/Director Jonathan Levine, Time in a Bottle: Behind the Scenes of The Wackness), The Luke Shapiro Show Episode 1, and deleted scenes.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (SEASON 4.0)
I’m listing this in the “Buy It” section more out of obligation than genuine interest. While I haven’t seen enough of the show to give a firm stance on how good it is, what I have seen didn’t exactly encourage me to keep watching. And yet, constant protesting from the show’s hardcore fanbase has convinced me to give it another chance. According to those individuals, this is without a doubt the greatest piece of sci-fi television ever produced. If that’s really the case, I’m sure they’re willing to overlook the fact that this DVD contains only the first 10 episodes of Season 4, forcing them to pay out the ass if they have any intention of completing the season with the next DVD release.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Original and extended versions of Razor, audio commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes (The Look of Battlestar Galactica, The Journey, Cylons: The Twelve, The Music of Battlestar Galactica, Season 4.5: The Untold Story - Untold), David Eicks Video Blogs, and Ronald Moore’s Podcast Commentaries.

FRISKY DINGO (SEASON 2)
While not as good as Venture Bros. or Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Frisky Dingo is still one of the best shows Adult Swim has to offer. It’s also the only show I know of that has a continuing storyline despite its 10-minute episode format. This actually acts as a benefit though, as it allows the creators to pack in as many ridiculous plot developments and off-the-wall jokes as possible without any issues of viewers growing bored. Season 2 of the show once again follows the ongoing battle between superhero Awesome X and supervillain Killface, this time as they vie for the presidency of the United States. The DVD contains 12 episodes.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A clip from the spin-off Xtacles series.

RIGHTEOUS KILL
Like many others, I was incredibly excited when I heard Al Pacino and Robert De Niro would be teaming up again for the first time since Heat. Then I found out the film they’d be starring in was from the same director as 88 Minutes, and my expectations plummeted. Apparently my fears were warranted too, as I’ve heard nothing but negative things about the movie since its release. I’m still interested in seeing it though, if only to witness two acting greats sharing the screen once again.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Audio commentary, making of featurette, and behind the scenes footage.

BABYLON A.D.
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
I feel bad for director Mathieu Kassovitz. It looked like there could’ve been a somewhat enjoyable film to be found with Babylon A.D., but then the studios had to tear it apart. Is it really any surprise that the reviews for this are terrible?
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc includes theatrical and unrated cuts of the film and 2 featurettes (Babylon Babies, Arctic Escape). The 2-disc includes everything on the single-disc, along with 2 additional featurettes (Fit For The Screen, Flight of the Hummers), a graphic novel prequel to Babylon A.D, and a digital copy of the film.

BANGKOK DANGEROUS
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
Not even shitty enough to reach so-bad-it’s-good status, Bangkok Dangerous is so utterly mundane and lacking in anything resembling entertainment, I’m still amazed I managed to survive the whole thing. How The Pang Brothers managed to butcher their own remake to such a degree is beyond me.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The 2-disc includes 2 featurettes (From Hong Kong to Bangkok - A Cinematic Movement, Bangkok Dangerous: The Execution of the Film), an alternate ending, and a digital copy of the film.

DISASTER MOVIE
This movie represents so much of what’s wrong with comedy, the teenage demographic and American society that I feel it’s my moral obligation to not even credit it with purchasing info or a DVD cover image.

  • I would recomend Bababylon A.D. for a rent over Righteous Kill both are equally as adverage but at least Babaylon A.D. had some semi-interesting visuals.
  • I would go the other way on this one.
Righteous Kill was not a bad movie. It's not a good movie. It is simply and extremely average film that you will forget the moment you turn it off. But it is entertaining enough if you just turn your brain off and let it happen.
Babylon AD on the other hand is an awful film. I would feel sorry for the director, but if he didn't know that the studios would cut it up into oblivion once he handed them the footage, then he is either blind or just didn't care. Or stupid. Either way he walked right into that one.
  • Water
I saw "The Wackness" per /Film's championing of it. I was severely disappointed because I could not relate to the characters. Maybe if I were in my 30's and did drugs throughout high school, I'd like it more. Or maybe I just needed to have that film festival chance screening. My biggest issue with it: I didn't see any negative consequences for the drug usage. I guess I just didn't like the story cuz I found the acting and technical stuff quite competent. I liked it just as much as, say, "Son of Rambow."
  • GOOFRIP
The Wackness was an under-rated movie! It was much better than Pineapple Express! & I'm a Pineapple Express Fan!
  • Well, just because you do drugs, doesn't always mean that your life will be 100 percent ruined. To quote Bill Hicks:

"No, I don't do drugs anymore, either. But I'll tell you something about drugs. I used to do drugs, but I'll tell you something honestly about drugs, honestly, and I know it's not a very popular idea, you don't hear it very often anymore, but it is the truth: I had a great time doing drugs. Sorry. Never murdered anyone, never robbed anyone, never raped anyone, never beat anyone, never lost a job, a car, a house, a wife or kids, laughed my ass off, and went about my day."
  • Water
And he never dealt either. There's a brief shadow of danger shown in the movie whereas I imagine Hicks prob got his stuff from some white collar dude. The movie dips into "Requiem For A Dream" territory but deals with the consequences like it was "Half Baked" (without the comedy).

It's personal taste anyway. Mainly, I didn't find any redeeming qualities in the characters, but I can see how others would fall in love with them. It's simply a fundamental difference and just my opinion.
  • Well that's your problem right there: you approach the "drug usage" like it's some major conflict in the movie that needs to be resolved. Guess what? A lot of people do drugs without any consequences. And in this case, the characters were smoking weed. Only in America is pot considered this terrible, life-destroying substance. In reality, it's actually much worse to get drunk than it is to get high. That's why marijuana is legal in most countries.
  • The best thing about Battlestar Galactica Seasons 2-4 is that the mini and season 1 came before them.

    Enough said.
  • Adam, watch BSG. Just go ahead and do it.

I'll admit there are stretches of Seasons 3 and 4 were things get a bit pedantic. But that shouldn't discourage you from enjoying the glory that was Season 1 or some of the best moments from the rest of the series.

I wasn't that thrilled with Pineapple Express. Franco rocks in it. But Rogen left me wanting and his whole high-school girlfriend angle was just crap.
  • Pineapple Express was a great flick. I avoided it because of all the average reviews it got here at /Film and other places. After watching it at the Hotel on a business trip to Chicago and laughing my ass off, I knew I was going to get it on Blu-Ray. Been looking forward to the release.

Never saw the Wackness because it failed to play at the 24 screen theater in my city for some reason. I grew up in the 90's so I might be able to appreciate it more than some. Still getting Pineapple Express for sure though.

Righteous Kill was BORING and please, PLEASE, stop casting fitty cent. He sucks!
  • Glory glory, Hallelujah! I'm so glad you didn't post any links for Disaster Movie... You're doing your part to kill these misguided "satires." I appreciate it!
  • That was the worst movie in the past decade. Hands down.
  • Water
Hey... there's still time for those two douches to come out with something worse.
  • Whilst Battlestar is a fantastic television program, it isn't the best program ever made. Whilst some episodes are simply phenomenal (Exodus comes to mind) it doesn't hit the highs as much as say The West Wing, The Sopranos or Arrested Development. And it doesn't have the complexity or structure that The Wire brings. But not much else does...
  • It says sci-fi television, not television in general. And at that point he's correct. The only sci-fi series that I can think of that could even compare to BSG is Babylon 5, but that's because Babylon 5 was the greatest show ever.
  • Kokushi
The Wackness was very good, i liked the 90s feel and the soundtrack was great, Josh Peck and Kingsley were great, renting Righteous Kill, just because of De Niro and Pacino and cant wait to see Pineapple Express.
  • Fabescore
FRISKY DINGO SHITS ON THE VENTURE BROS.... BOOSH AND/OR KAKOW! seriously, FD is one of the funniest laugh per second shows i've ever seen.
  • Frisky Dingo trys to relive the glory days of Sealab 2021 and fails miserably.
  • Fabescore
Obviously you haven't watched it, and for that, you are retarded. Frisky Dingo picks up where sealab left off after murphy (harry) died. proof's in the pudding. Alvis will fuck you up. watch the show from very first episode on and then try and say that it doesn't live up to the 'glory days' of sealab, it meets and possibly exceeds.
  • I have good sir, otherwise, my statement would make sense. I base my judgment on things I watch, so need for the name calling. I've watched all the way up to mid Season 2, live on the television, and I just don't see it as funny as SeaLab was.
  • Fabescore
i'm still sticking to the FACT that you're retarded. (only cause you forgot to put no before need) boosh. Sealab is effing great, but, only certain ones were beyond hilarious, and the others were moderately hilarious. Frisky Dingo has laughs (really really good ones) every second. I'm going to let you have your opinion, cause i can, but i do disagree. Thank Alvis your heart is in the right place, if you were advocating for the venture bros i wouldn't even bother. Sealab for life. FD for life. S'what she said. Turn Six!!!!!!!
  • Agreeing to Disagree. That's the ticket. :D
And thanks for pointing out my typo. Alvis appreciates it.
  • Fabescore
Praise him! AtD indeed! Nothing but love of spirited debate! Do me a favor and finish season 2 of Frisky Dingo. its a good'n.
  • I'll add it to my queue and get back to you. Create an Intense Debate account so I can follow you too. (Rhymes)
  • Joe
Not adding to the conversation here, but I'm gonna pick up FD Season 2 because I loved the first 7 episodes I saw, but missed everything after the cliffhanger.

    GET ON DA BUS!
  • I went to see Pineapple Express in the theater and thought I would love it but it was horribly unfunny. Skip it.
Love Battlestar but its broken into two different box sets for the season. Rip off.
  • Adam, I love your coment about Disaster Movie. That is so true.
  • i wouldnt say "horribly" unfunny... there were some funny moments.

And the price for it aint too bad...
  • BSG is only the cost of half a season, so it's not paying out the ass, it's paying half now, half later.
  • Wrong. There's only a $10 difference in retail price between Season "4.0" ($50) and the complete Season 1 and 2 sets ($60).
  • Wrong. There's only a $10 difference in retail price between Season "4.0" ($50) and the complete Season 1 and 2 sets ($60). Sure, the sale price makes it cheaper, but I can guarantee that was also the case for the other DVDs.
  • Wrong. There's only a $10 difference in retail price between Season "4.0" ($50) and the complete Season 1 and 2 sets ($60). Sure, the sale price makes it cheaper, but I can guarantee that was also the case for the other DVDs. In the end, you're still paying close to double what you should be. That's exactly why they do it.
  • Was Sorpranos not $70 to $80, when it was released on DVD. Aren't some still priced that high today? And Sopranos on has 13 episodes. Considering that BSG is 21 episodes, it's sort of makes sense does it not?
  • I've never seen somebody so willing to defend the ridiculous overpricing of DVD sets. You actually think it makes sense to pay $70 to $80 for 13 episodes of a TV show? Seriously?
  • Oh no, misconception. I was saying that BSG has 21 episodes so that, so that it would make sense to pay the 70,80 dollars for that, as OPPOSED to how they treated Sopranos. I wasn't defending overpriced DVD sets good sir. Just making an observation. Hell, even the Wire was 60 bucks when it came out, and that was only 13 episodes as well.

I wasn't defending overpriced DVD sets good sir. Just making an observation. Hell, even the Wire was 60 bucks when it came out, and that was only 13 episodes as well. If you do the math, you make out better this way, than buying one of the shows I've stated.
  • Your example of The Sopranos may be worse than the one of BSG, but that doesn't make the tactics behind the latter DVD set any less irritating. HBO is notorious for charging WAY beyond the norm for all their sets, and it's that very issue that has prevented me from spending anything close to the retail price on any of them. But just because one is worse than the other, that doesn't mean we should suddenly support the lesser of two evils.
  • Duly Noted, and completely valid. This one doesn't seem so bad to me as it comes with the television movie Razor ($20), as opposed to when they did it the last time on Season 2.0 and Season 2.5, which didn't really come with anything "special". Being a fan, I guess I don't mind paying the extra 5 to 10 bucks extra for the two sets (I buy sale prices too). Eventually, when it's released on Blu-Ray, I plan on purchasing them again, so I guess I'm part of the problem as to why companies do such things, but I like supporting shows I find enjoyment in. I'd do the same for Pushing Daisies if it kept it on air.
  • Jackson
I've never watched BSG but I've been meaning to do so. I just couldn't help but notice the dude on the cover is totally staring down that chicks shirt
  • Watch the Show and you will too. Big ones.
  • I recommend renting or netflixing it or whatever the hell Bangkok Dangerous. Then I recommend fast forwarding to the AWKWARD SANDWICH of a scene where Nic Cage has a date with the deaf girl. Because that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Ever. Other than Pineapple Express. Which I watched 5 times in theaters and I'm super friggen excited to go buy.
  • Bangkok Dangerous was just terrible.
  • Lono
I wish they'd release the first 5 minutes of Pinapple Express in a seperate DVD. It was genius. The movie goes downhill quick after that.
  • I missed both Pineapple Express and The Wackness, so I'm glad I'll finally be able to check them out.
  • Pineapple Express was disappointing. Franco and McBride were great, but the funniest bits were in the trailers and commercials. Tropic Thunder and Zack & Miri were much funnier.
  • Nickleyo
Hehe, Disaster movie. I almost skipped over that little paragraph. While I'm at it, I just want to say thanks for writing this stuff, and keep up the good work.
  • Also, DUCKMAN is out this week on DVD! Does anybody remember this hilarious show?
  • wheredidtheygo
    awesome
those days were full of ducks
  • Here's what I have to say about The Wackness: Vintage hip hop, New York, reefer...and only one black dude? Come on.

Other than that it was cool.
  • Uhh Nic Cage should be in every movie for the rest of time. Think of the wig possibilities.
