What will McG be directing after Terminator Salvation? Terminator 5? Nope. Disney has signed McG to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo for $8 million against 7% of the gross according to Variety. I’m likely to be screamed at by the anti-McG club, but I’m convinced that McG has the talent to make a visually stunning film, which is exactly what Nemo needs to be. What McG has lacked most of his career has been a good script. However, I’d almost rather him stick to a darker sci-fi path, especially after what I’ve seen so far from Terminator Salvation. This also seems like the perfect type of movie for Disney to release in Disney Digital 3-D.

Disney hopes to make the film this year, and McG is slotting it as his next, which begs the question — what does that mean for the next Terminator film, which is now in development. Halcyon hopes to have the fifth Terminator film in theaters for Summer 2011, which means that the film would have to go into production by April 2010, which gives McG more than enough time to make Nemo in between.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo was scripted by Bill Marsilli (Deja Vu) and tells the origin story of Nemo and his warship, the Nautilus. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first live action film in Walt Disney history, and is considered by many to be the most mature film they have ever produced. Based on the Jules Verne novel of the same name, the 1954 film told the story of a ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo.

The film is best remembered for the giant-squid battle and for the Nautilus itself. It won two Academy Awards in 1955 for Best Effects and Set Decoration, and was also nominated for Best Film Editing. By 1955, Disney Studios did not have enough space to be able to keep the large sets used during production of the film so instead of destroying them, they became part of a walk-through attraction in the Tomorrowland area of the newly opened Disneyland park in California, where it remained until 1966. The Submarine Voyage was another popular attraction based on the film took visitors on an underwater adventure.

  • Captain Nemo? For an underwater film. Forget the name 20000 leauges under the sea...every review//story//speculation will have some pun to the pixar classic
  • I have zero faith in McG. I'm optimistic about Salvation, but I'm going to wait and see. Nothing I've seen so far has led me to believe that Salvation will be anything other than ordinary. If he can pull of a spectacular job on Salvation, then I might get excited about another McG movie. As for now, anything that man has touched has been sucktastic.
  • Don't forget, he made "the O.C." so clearly he's competent and has vision.
  • REAL6
Put it this way, even if the Charlie's Angels movies were crap i'll give this guy the benifit of the doubt. We cant shit on him yet till we see the finished product. Then from there we can love him or hate him. SO i'll wait and give the guy a chance!!!
  • I'm surprised Disney hasn't tried to remake 20,000 Leagues already.
  • is he REALLY that competent of a director? i have high hopes for salvation, McG isn't really set on my radar of what to expect from him yet.

anyone else think this could be good?
  • As far as I can tell he will live up to the hype with salvation. Nothing could be worse then T3.
  • Brian Rodden
I think we're all waiting to see if Terminator Salvation is any good before we start making serious judgements of McG's "talent." Good thing he got Christian Bale because otherwise I probably wouldn't be seeing it.
  • T3 wasn't THAT bad...it had its moments...
  • Arnold as a wrecking ball FTW!
  • Strungout
I don't mind McG as a director, I just wish he didn't use such a stupid pseudonym for his name. Makes me think of McGriddle. (It is a pseudonym right?)
  • HAHAHAHAHAHA
  • Personally I think Wes Anderson should get the movie. The Life Aquatic's style set in a world where the visuals can be as outlandish as possible.
  • jrice73
I guess if this is going to be made, I'd go for Naveen Andrews of LOST as Nemo.
  • Rooster
McG seems to have a hard on for James Cameron themes, Terminator, under water adventures if he goes for sc-fi aliens or a ship disaster movie after this its going to look pretty weird.

I also agree a good deal of the hate is that retarded name McG if he ditched it he would fair a lot better.
  • Kyle
I've always been a fan of Disney so I think this movie has potential.
  • Eric R.
I'll trust Peter's instincts on this one. I don't have hate for McG as I do for Brett Ratner. If the script is solid I think it will be a fun movie to take my kids to. Plus with the disaster of the character Nemo in League of Extrodinary Gentlemen, I need a good take of the Captain.
  • I dunno... I mean yeah you can say that McG could make a good film with a good script... but it could just suck like his other films...
And i agree, McG is a retarded name.
  • i have faith in mcg. i like that guy. from what i see, the new terminators are gonna be pretty awesome. this should be no differnet
  • The 1954 version of 20,000 Leagues with Kirk Douglas and...(I can't quite remember who else was in the film at this time) was and still is a classic film of cinema, but for McG to jump from Angel's to Terminator to this, is a huge leap, a huge leap that I can't see paying off as it would take a director with an inspired vision to create a film that does justice to the original story.
  • McG needs to be tied up for awhile making alot of Terminator movies. Well, that's if the latest one is any good.
  • I want him to direct, "The Adventures of Robin."
  • dont be haten. give the guy a chance its hollywood snakes spiders rats and rabbit dogs at every corner, he has done ok , maybe he can open up on this one
i have a feeling McG..HAS a good feeling for water ala Luc Besson..goog luck mate

this new version from the timeless classic of the father of science fiction make me insecure toward the "talent" of this McG guy, i love so much the 1950s version with James Mason as Captain Nemo, altoughth the movie itself is not the most literate adaptation its the best adaptation of the vernian fiction along the film versions of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959) and AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTHY DAYS (1956) and you know why? because they were produced by REAL directors!! it amazes me how Hollywood hires whoever clown to direct a film. Jules Verne was a great imaginative genius and his stories deserves respect just like Jackson did with his adaptation from Tolkien´s books, tought, is not literate is faithfull to the book source

Also, do you know there is an upcoing adaptation of Mellvile´s MOBY DICK? i dont remember who will direct it but i just hope ( i pray) they dont butcher another great literature/movie classic if thats so, then i would watch the John Huston´s 1956 film anyday.
