Writer/director Kevin Smith runs two comic book stores, one in his home town of Red Bank, NJ and the other in Los Angeles. Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash opened in Red Bank, NJ nearly a decade ago. Filled with comics books and memorabilia and props from Smith’s films, the location has been a local tourist attraction of sorts and is still going strong.

The Los Angeles location has had a hard time staying afloat since opening a few years ago. In 2007, the Westwood location was shut down and moved into the popular DVD store Laser Blazer. But now the economic downturn has forced Laser Blazer to shut the doors. Here is a quote from Ron, the manager of Laser Blaser on Newsaskew:

“We gave it our best shot and we’re sorry to see another great comic book shop leave L.A. It has been a pleasure taking care of all of Kevin’s fans. If you haven’t been in yet, it’s your last chance to see The Stash and say your goodbyes. All Stash merchandise will be discounted 20% until the final day.”

The final day is January 11th. Here’s hoping that the West Coast Stash finds a new home someday, although I doubt it will happen. It’s a tough market, and I don’t think Smith is interested in having a storefront without a friend in charge. Also, in LA, its hard to compete with Golden Apple or the other great comic book stores.

  • I haven't even been there but... that sucks.

Woulda been cool to go one day.

Why can't he just use all of the money he made from Zack and Miri...wait, oh, yeah...
  • He'll make more off the DVD that you will working the rest of your life, but nice attempt at a burn, anyway.
  • This will make the NJ location the Kevin Smith Mecca.
  • probably.
  • Hmm Maybe if you sold comic books as wel rather than memorabilia. your films "Stash" would only hold up for fans but to run a store you need to appeal to consumers as well
  • 'Tis a good point.

i was about to be sad, but i guess if it didn't have much in the way of comics then oh well. coincidently, a shop near me closed and their comic selection was pretty weak too. always under stocked.
  • thanks kavak yelleri
  • I'm sad that comic book shops are always closing.

I blame the Internet, Borders, Ebay, Amazon, and Barnes&Noble for all that.
  • At least those things you blame are weeding out the 'mega' stores and only leaving the niche, cool indie stores who have loyal followers... I can see a film in this idea... I see a nerd chaining himself to the comic store door while a construction worker attempts to begin demolition while the evil banker who is set to get-rich-quick looks on...
  • I shopped at the original West Coast Stash from the time it opened until about six months before they closed. I fondly recall the great encounters that I had there, both with Kevin and Jay Mewes who actually worked at the store for a little while. I met some great people too who I can still count as friends.

When it closed I was sad, then it reopened and I was happy again. Unfortnately my own comics buying has dwindled down to virtually nothing and as previous posters have said, the prices on everything BUT comics were much higher than at either Golden Apple or Meltdown.

So I'm sad to see the Stash go again.

But I'll tell you what I'm more sad about, LAZER BLAZER is closing. That just totally sucks. Now it's either Best Buy/Target for new DVDs, or the internet. Dammit.
  • Not huge loss just went there for the my first time a couple days ago. It looks out of place in lazer blazer there.

Also lazer blazer isn't closing just the comic book part of the store

Go to say Peter you dropped the ball bringing up golden apple as a decent store when they have some of the most lousy staff i've ever seen, plus theres much better comic shops in LA such as Secret Headquarters, Meltdown, House of Secrets, Emerald Knights, DJ'S comics, Hi De Ho comics, and any other comic shop in LA.

    Golden Apple sucks
  • /filmer
He edited the post to now say "or the other great comic book stores." I've actually only been to Golden Apple mainly due to it being right next door to Galley 1988, but I thought it was good. I definitely want to check out some of those other places you mentioned though.
  • here's a list I made of the best comic shops in LA. There locations and descriptions on yelp

Dame shame it's closing. Went to the original Los Angeles Secret Stash when it was still in westwood. Always loved all of the little extra trinkets they had from the movies, and the props in the back. Not much in the way of a comic book selection or great deals, but it was a nice little store. Might check it out this week at lazer blazer if I can before they close it.
  • "Not much in the way of a comic book selection or great deals, but it was a nice little store."

Um, could that be why it didn't do so well? I would think that would be quite a necessity for... well, a comic book store.
  • Justin Brogan
Undoubtedly. A lot of the store's space was taken up by Costumes and so forth. A small wall full of comic books, mostly mainstream series, a few isles of Askewniverse trinkets, and a bunch of shirts, but the stuff was a bit overpriced. It might be different over at Lazer Blazer, but the westwood location was right next to UCLA, if it's not going to do well there then it doesn't have much hope anywhere else.
  • oh.
  • Explains a lot, actually.
  • Lono
LOL! Captain Howdy thinks he omnipotent, but really he's just plain ol' impotent.
  • Lono
Oh and Cap, I've been to the Red Bank store. You will be sorely disappointed. Can't vouch for the Devils though...
  • If I were to go to america, I wanted to go to that...
    =[
    WHY LORD, WHY!?
  • Just go to the New Jersey store. That's still open. I'm going to make that trip pone day, and will include watching the New Jersey Devils take the ice in an NHL game. One day...
  • Thats a shame, i was going to check that out in a few weeks.
  • Ah damn, I liked the place! Ever only went there once, but it was cool... A bit over-priced, but oh well. You can't compete with Best Buy. It's not the economy - it's that capitalism has progressed and it's impossible to be a small shop nowadays. Big corporations rule the world!
  • Kevin
Don't blaspheme in here. Meltdown is by far the best comic shop in Los Angeles, with Secret Headquarters ranking just behind it.
  • There were never any hot chicks in there! The Red Bank store has way more cute chicks visit it! Snooch the Nooch!
