Another 2008 Tribute Video

Yesterday we posted /Film reader Matt Shapiro’s now annual A Year in Movies video compilation. If you haven’t seen it, check it out now.  Another /Film reader named Kees van Dijkhuizen put together a 2008 compilation of his own called “2008 - A Tribute To The Movies”. This six minute video is split into a few different genre defining sections.

  • And yes, There Will Be Blood technically came out in 2007. I'm guessing that Kees is using the "wide release" dates
  • joshua
    the other one is better.
  • Couldn't disagree more. You know you are looking at talent when they can make even bad movies, look fantastic.

Fucking Epic. Kees, you the man.
  • its just a long trailer. try using scenes not already shown in the trailers.
  • Easier to get clips from trailers as their are easier t source online, I guess.
  • Plus it's legal.
  • I like this one a lot better than the other.

And Peter, is Kees American? I know TWBB didn't come out in a lot of foreign countries 'til 2008.
  • I'm dutch, so that explains TWBB showing up.
  • I Prefer this one to the other one. However i had seen more of the movies on the other one.
  • I liked the other one much more. More dramatic and powerful IMO
  • Anrkist
Tell me, was the editing more powerful... or the choice of music?
  • Both used the same music. This video used it at a later point. The editing was more powerful and the scenes picked went well with the music
  • agree, although I like both equally, they both have their moments.
  • Right. They were both good. Although, is it just me or did this one have more movies in it. It seemed like the other one just hit the "big" movies and this one was more comprehensive, more representative of the year as a whole, both good and bad.
  • Yes this one had alot more movies in it. That's why it's longer. I feel that this one did a great job at representing 08 as a good year for movies. Like i said, the other one's just as good though.
  • The editing is really good but the other wrap up video was thematically better- it actually touched me on an emotional level.
  • Really? I thought they were both good in different ways, but this one had the small tribute to a handful of actors that passed away this year, that's the part that really got me. Especially, Paul Newman. The other one seemed like it just hit more of the action, but this one seemed more intimate.
  • nick
    other one was better
  • Ben
does anyone know the song between 1:20 and 2:30 with quick editing between the guitar? Its put as In The End but i can't find anything similar to it.
  • Thanks!
  • Holy crap this guy is only 15. I'm feeling old now.
  • This one wins because it has Twilight! But seriously, pretty cool video, Kees.
  • Yeah this one had the great song from the last one plus tributes to most of the actors that have left us. also more movies.
  • Rob
Ahhh, once again, featuring the most overused "Uplifting Music Cue" of 2008, courtesy of Sigur Ros.
  • Jake
What's interesting is that while it included There Will Be Blood, which I understand because he may have seen it in 2008, it left out some major fall and winter movies. (Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Seven Pounds, The Wrestler to name a few)
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon was in it.
  • Palmer
I'm just not feeling this one. I mean it's good, but not great.
  • that's good stuff
  • Jake
I stand corrected. After a second viewing I do see Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button but still not the other three. Another 2 movies I would have liked to see in this are Man on Wire, and Religulous, espicially because he managed to include Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden, and finally, there's really no excuse not to include The Visitor. But now I'm just nitpicking. Great Video!
  • What movie was that at the 2 minute mark?

"I'm a soldier. Soldiers fight war."
    "That isn't war!"
"It's a vital part of it!"
  • "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"
  • Also hearing The Servant song makes me want to watch Sin City again.
  • This one was certainly well put together, but I also like the other one more. For me, I think the biggest flaw is thanking Hollywood for such gems as Hancock, Speed Racer, Love Guru, and the list goes on. Simply put, there were way too many bad movies celebrated in this montage, and I would prefer to forget a majority of them ever happened.
  • Flaw? Why is this a flaw? Instead of giving us his favorite films 08 he gave us 08 as a whole, which is cool i think. In the end everybody decides his favorite film of 08 by himself.
  • Yes that was the point. There are people who love The Love Guru and who love Hancock (like me) and I think not including those movies because they don't fit my personal taste is nothing less than stupid.
  • It's always nice to hear from the creator. That's one thing I liked about this video, it had more movies of 2008. Plus the tribute at the end.

    Once again, thank you.
  • Yes, i knew it! =)
  • Granted everyone has a right to their opinion, and thus their fave movie of 08 be on there. So in essence, this is moreso a list of all the movies from 08 rather than a list of the best. Regardless of your preference (be it Love Guru, Dark Knight, or The Wrestler) they all weren't/can't be great, and thus they all don't deserve to be on the list of "fantastic" movies of this past year.
  • This is not a list of "fantastic" movies of 08.
  • Did you watch the video? In the first 5 seconds it says "A tribute to a fantastic year of movies" thus suggesting that they were all fantastic. I have to disagree.
  • I like this one way more, in fact i love it.
  • how come everyone uses the same sigur ros song?
  • Ugh, forget what i said.
  • BROOKLYN
could someone please list all the tracks used in this video? I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.
  • could someone please read the description or watch the end of a video? I would very much appreciate it.
  • BROOKLYN
    thanks for being a dick.
  • some very bad movies in that clip, sorry...
  • Dylan
did you read the other post? the video was movies of 08 not the best of 08
  • I know !,i wonder why choose only crappy popular hollywood !,some people only watches what mainstream media told them to watch and that becomes a clip of what a whole year in movies was
