In an attempt to say “Nothing to see here, Lawsuit… what lawsuit? Everything is fine. Look See… Fine!”, Warner Bros has released yet another Watchmen featurette on MySpace. Director Zack Snyder gives an overview of the film and the characters of the world. So watch the video below, and take a look at the film that we probably won’t see if the evil fox corporation has their way (yes, that was a joke… and if you didn’t get it, so was the title of this article).

And for the record, I think fanboys need to stop placing blame on Fox for this whole mess. I hate Fox just as much as the next guy, but it looks like they probably aren’t in the wrong, at least in this situation. I’m no Lawyer, but I’ve read a lot about this case and it looks to me like Fox had the rights to make a Watchmen movie and never willingly relinquished those rights. According to Fox, they contacted Warner Bros during pre-production. If this is true, Warner Bros should have been more careful, but they weren’t… They went ahead with production anyways. And to make matters worse, it seems that this isn’t the first time this kind of thing has happened with Warner Bros. Please Google “Dukes of Hazard Warner Bros Lawsuit” for more information.

Fanboys like to claim that “Fox is only suing Warner Bros now because they see that the movie is going to make tons of money.” While it is true that Fox wants money, I’m pretty sure their would have been a lawsuit regardless of the hype. Imagine if Zack Snyder had made a bad movie, and the buzz online was that the film looked worse than Disaster Movie. I’m confident that Fox would have still filed a lawsuit. Imagine that you own the rights to make a Batman movie. You’re developing the property, or sitting onto it to wait for the right time when you discover that another studio is making a really crappy Batman movie without obtaining the rights from you. You tell them to stop, they don’t. When they attempt to release it, would you let them? No. It’s your property, and you have to protect it. Not only could a bad movie hurt the brand name (a brand name that you hold the rights to) but it forces your hand.

It sucks that this Fox lawsuit is happening at all. But I’m sure that we will see this film, so calm down. But if you’re going to hate Fox, please hate them for their shitty movies. Hate them for placing Joss Whedon television series on Friday nights. Hate them for giving Bill O’Reilly a television show. But don’t hate them for this. Or at least not yet. As we get closer to the January trial, I think it will become clearer who is to blame. And sadly, that might not be Fox.

What about not hating fox? Is that an option?
  • Again this film looks fantastic, Snyder seems to have really put himself forward to make the film as close to the graphic novel as possible. Not too keen on The Comedians voice mind, but everything else including the little tidbits of the film we've seen of Doc Manhattan on Mars and the Silk Spectre and Nite Owl breaking Rorschach out of prison look spectacularly brilliant!
  • filmkid
this movie will be release no matter what it might turn out to be a joint thing with WB and FOX
  • you mean a WB, FOX and Paramount venture? There's three involved.
  • They should compromise, let Warner release the film and then let FOX produce Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation. Win win.
  • TheMarquis
    I'd watch it.

Watchmen Babies, we make our dreams come true!
Watchmen Babies, we'll do the same for you!

Night Owl: When your world looks kinda weird and you wish that you weren't there
Silk Spectre: Just close your eyes and make believe, the Watchmen are everywhere!
  • Still looks good.
  • On the topic of the actual footage: I would say what worried me most heading into the movie was how the characters would actually interact, how the dialogue would come across. Everything we saw in the beginning was just a bunch of fancy and cool images and small sections of the movie set to a great song. This clip made me feel much better about the movie as a whole, and gave me hope that even the little things will get pulled off successfully.
  • we love you Peter! I love it when you write dramatic rants like that.
  • /filmluvsfox
blah blah. i hate Fox for crap movies. i enjoy WB. but WB did wrong. i think it'd be weird to see Fox's name on it and not WB.
  • Seems unusual that they released this not on a sixth. hmmm....
  • Funny that they release all the video on myspace, that is onwed by News Corp.!
  • Seth
Well said, Peter. It looks like Fox has a case. And a good one.

Warner needs to settle this and move on.

HOWEVER, that being said, imagine one had a time machine and could go back and have Warner approach Fox to work out a deal. Whatever deal they would have accepted will no where match what Fox wants now that the movie looks like a smoking hot property.

That's still Warner's fault, but Fox is certainly going to cash in on Warner's sweat and toil. Sucks for Warner, I guess. But they're going to have to pay up.
  • Zinc
Yeah, I saw this in one of those many previews you see before the film's attached previews start when I went to see Benjamin Button back on Saturday.
  • The clip was put up on Dec. 24th, when they lost the lawsuit. Lol
  • a_b
    looks stupid
  • I have a dream. A dream where petty mega corporations put aside their greed and allowed a movie to be available to the masses.

    However, it's only a dream.
  • Who Watches
ScanCase I'm afraid that is only a dream...
This looked interesting, though I took slight insult to him claiming 'it's really a simple story.' If anything, Watchmen was deep, complex, and intertwining.
Also, does Rorschack's mask change like that in the novel?! I'm reading it for a second time right now and haven't noticed that.
    'Hrmm. Must research further.'
  • there was a whole page of the book talking about how he got the mask
  • Yeah dude, it literally changes from frame to frame
  • I hate Fox more for what they did to Firefly...

Watchmen will come out on time.
  • Pete (original)
i never really cared about seeing this until this video. thanks!
  • Ben
Oh for the love of... would someone "accidentally" release it to bit-torrent? Those of us that download it could buy an extra WB DVD to say "Thanks, *wink, wink*"

I mean really, why don't you settle all this after the movie has made money? That way Fox could see how much they are looking at cash wise. Arguing over this before it's been released or even made any money seems like they COULD be wasting money fighting over something that won't actually MAKE any money.
  • Flax
Did I just get spoiled during that clip? It looked like the comedian is turning on his group, and specifically, Night Owl. That sucks. Now, no matter when the movie comes out, I know THAT's going to happen. I knew if I wanted to save myself I shouldn't have clicked that video. Shit.
  • To be fair, you didn't click the video -- for some reason it auto-plays. Which, by the way, is lame on /f's part.
  • Splungeman
Don't worry about it. It's not really much of a spoiler at all. The book is full of scenes of these characters arguing about the morality of their actions. Go and pick up a copy of Watchmen and read it. You'll be happy you did.
  • Cool Galactic Empire T-shirt.
  • pretty cool video !
  • John S.
This Watchmen film produced by Warner Bros. will be better than anything Fox could ever do with the Watchmen property.

When we say Fox is evil, we, of course, speak in generalities, not just based on this isolated instance...
  • they play this featurette before the movie trailers at my theater in a really annoying thing called "First Look"
  • "First Look" makes my soul hurt. That and those Fandango ads. Stupid paper bags.
  • do you have Happy the Hedgehog too?
i want to blow my head off.
  • Ugh, if I have to see Happy the Hedgehog one more I'm going to scream...
  • Chris H.
Listen Honestly I don't care when I see it, as long as I see it in IMAX im happy
  • That was... a lot of slow motion.
  • Lujs
    yeah.. maybe too much
  • Gott amake it run for three house SOMEHOW, people.
  • Gotta make it run for three house SOMEHOW, people.
  • Joe
Look behind Ozy in his NYC shot, and you'll see a pretty freaky person, baby.

Also :'( at the lawsuit. It'll probably get pushed to July, where it'll get crushed by Transformers 2.
  • Lujs
    david bowie?
  • edc
    meh
  • I second that 'meh'.
  • I'll call your meh and raise you a -sigh-
  • the hick
pretty cool video, cant wait to see the movie, if it ever comes out that is
  • Palmer
It feels like a sadistic kid (Fox, WB, DC, the lawyers or whatever) dangling a carrot (Watchmen) in front of a rabbit (the general public) and just as the rabbit gets within reach the kid pulls it away laughing and evil laugh and instead throws you an unsatisfying slice.
  • Eduardo
Don't blame Fox or WB, blame producer Lawrence Gordon. It was he that signed the original deal with Fox that made this happen; an independent movie producer, not a studio. Gordon should have made the WB aware of his Fox deal before one single frame of film was even shot. And what about DC... regardless of how this all works out, how can a DC owned property, in which DC is owned by Warner Bros., be in the hands of another studio? But then again, doesn't Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons own the actual intellectual property rights to the graphic novel, and DC is merely just a distributor?

Whatever happens, this surely isn't going to end quietly or quickly. Let the GONG SHOW begin!
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the story goes that DC was supposed to let the book go out of print, in order to let the IP rights revert back to Moore. But they didn't, Moore got pissed, and it's one of the reasons why he wants nothing to do with this movie.
  • This just pure torture, just like Plamer above said.
