VOTD: Mac vs. PC - Transformers Style

Inspired by Transformers, this High Definition short film not only gives us a real glimpse into the real world of home computers, but also attempts to settle the ultimate debate: what is better - Mac or PC. Ignore the questionable acting, the visual effects by digital compositor Nick Greenlee make this worth watching. Utilizing everything from motion capture animation and HDRI, to massive amounts of tacking and 3D compositing (which can be seen in almost every shot), this short won Best Compositing at Artimation 2008.   • Easily the funniest part was watching the PC glacially rebooting. More of a dig at Microsoft than PCs in general, but as Ralph Wiggum would say, it’s funny ’cause it’s true.
  • The second I saw the halls in this film, I knew at what brand of school it was filmed at. This is an Art Institute video, possibly a demo reel for a portfolio. The real tragedy is the super high education cost.

  • They appear to be animation students, not directors. That and they don't have access to a budget for anything but what the school will let them check out. Hence the reason it was filmed in the halls of the school with students. Not to be an apologist for them, but if they are animation students I can see why some parts are lacking.

    This is boring. I'm a huge fan of Transformers and student films but this just didn't do it for me. Good editing and great effects, but other than that. Pass.

  • If you noticed, PC was running Vista in the beginning and upgraded to XP at which point he became faster. :P

  • the short won Best Compositing, basically - making the animated content look like it is in the real environment. The shadows the robots leave on the walls and corresponding camera movement is actually quite remarkable. But yes, the animation itself isn't the best.

    Perhaps they'll do a PS3 vs Xbox 360 next? That would be pretty cool to see though the fanboy drama that would create, would make any site reporting it need better servers.

    I love how it starts off as just another badly acted web video and then completely pulls the rug in terms of effects for the robots. Awesome vid.

    Great animation. Fun. I like how the finale suggests that all the PCs will now transform--which in sheer number would be a formidable force, no matter how well the Macs kick ass.

    But I do wish they'd edited down the actors lines to a line each.

    people who are saying this is crap are wanks, this is excellent special effects work. Companies with huge amounts of money take ages to pull something like this off, and these students did it with little budget and resources..

    Shame on you people for saying this was crap.. I bet none of you would even know what software to use to produce something like this..

    Fair enough the actors were as good as Chevy Cahse in a horro movie, but it wasnt about the actors so get over it..

    I can see why this won though. Cool idea, just could have had a slightly better execution.
