Roger Ebert Bitchslaps The Spirit

Pulitzer Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert on Frank Miller’s The Spirit:

“The Spirit is mannered to the point of madness. There is not a trace of human emotion in it. To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material.”

  • He's been brash as of late. More-so than usual. Oh well, I agree with him on a lot of things so can't blame him.
  • have you read his blog? He is a wonderful writer and always writes the most interesting blogs.
  • Yeah, I frequent it often. His Christmas Jingle he posted was hilarious.
  • Cardboard was also a good use for my life-size Boba Fett stand-up! ;)
(Not good for just packing material, Mr. Ebert)
  • TKO
  • Bitch slapped the mask right off his face!
  • This movie has rubbed me the wrong way every since Frank Miller decided to make this film into a Spirit/Sin City crossover. Vindicated? A little bit :)
  • Vlatka
    Whats more, Ebert is right.
  • Thanks, now all I can think of is why Sam L. is in a Nazi uniform???!!! Now I'll have to go see this movie. *Sigh*
  • It's crazy how bad this movie sounds like it's going to be. I wish it wasn't true because I feel like I've been waiting for this movie for awhile now.
  • Ebert has been really badass lately. He's become the Rorschach of film critics.
  • B e n - A
It's true. Ebert has upped his game in recent months. I only just to occasionally peruse his site for reviews, and now I do it on most occasions. So go Ebert.
  • GOOFRIP
F*ck Ebert! The only reason he's a critic is because he can't make a darn Movie nor The Spirit!

How dare he bash a bad movie when he can't even make a bad one himself.
  • He probably can, he just doesn't want to. I think some directors were ex-film critics who finally went into the movie industry after people bitched how they couldn't make their own film. Those include Steven Spielberg, Francis Trouffaut, and etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ebert whipped out an Oscar flick in the next few years.
  • GOOFRIP
Yeah, you have a great deal of sense in the matter of Francis Trouffaut. Steven Spielberg had always wanted to be a filmmaker though, according to him, so in a way he doesn't count as much!
  • He uses "To call _________ a ________ is an insult to _________" quite a bit. Becoming a tired but still amusing old record.
  • "He's become the Rorschach of film critics." That's a great line...

Ebert rocks. Even when he was fat.

...and I gotta get me one of those life size Boba Fett cut outs...
  • Dr. Doc
people calling Spirit a Sin City rip off, or a Spirit/ Sin City crossover are idiots

the two films share a distinct visual style because its MILLERS style of film making, Sin City was based off of his art style, why should he change the way he does things? its his style

still cant wait to see this flick
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with an artist staying true to what they know, but the Miller style doesn't work for everything. In his classic Batman comics, his art really works for the Dark Knight Returns, but I don't think it'd work for Batman: Year One. I've always felt that it's about knowing your strengths and playing to those. The gritty tough film noir style Miler has does not seem to work for the Spirit. If you enjoy it though then that's good.
  • aaaaa
    i feel sorry for you.
  • i LOL'd
  • The review feels incomplete.. still better than the movie though. Ha!
  • Ebert is badass.
  • GOOFRIP
Way to post some bull just to get post points!
  • I caught a clip on Conan O'Brien featuring Eva Mendes... good lord, it was AWFUL. I can't believe studios want Miller to direct MORE of this tripe...

I'm sorry, I went overboard with that comment... comparing The Spirit to tripe is an insult to edible sausage casing...
  • Mike Macnamara
Calling Tripe Edible Sausage Casing is an insult to Cow's stomach's everywhere... But I digress. There's just something vicerally wrong with The Spirit. I can't put my finger on it but I think it might just be the corny acting, the bad plot and the shallow characters. Did I mention the bad acting?
  • rayofthejungle
Frank Miller is no Uwe Boll.
  • Anthony
I am still going to see it, but I think it should have been made with bright colors like the original comic strip, instead of Sin City style. A cheesy over the top 30s comic strip cop story is the way it was... and the way it should be.

Adam West's Batman is actually closer to the style of Will Eisner's Spirit than Frank Miller's version.
  • RudyL
Can we have more Marvel superhero movies instead of this pulp fiction 30's throwbacks?
  • Ouch... this stinks. I still feel like would spend ten dollars on this film if there weren't 2-3 other films I am already planning to see.
  • ...Maybe he should have made Eisner's Spirit and not his own. Left in Ebony, make the Octipus camera-reclusive, etc. Shame.
  • i hated the trailer more than any shitty movie i ever saw
  • Lono
    Ebert Rules!
  • Joe Newman
Ebert also hated Fight Club and A Clockwork Orange not that The Spirit would be even close to that caliber but still
  • Brian Rodden
I have to say Ebert is usually right. This movie looks horrible and I can't wait to make fun of it when it comes out on DVD/Netflix.
  • TIGER, UPPERCUT!!!
  • Best two-word comment ever, while still conveying meaning.
  • "The Octopus heroically overacts, devouring the scenery as if following instructions from Gladstone, the British prime minister who attributed his success to chewing each bite 32 times." When Roger doesn't like or enjoy a film, he certainly knows how to put it down!
  • Brian from OR
From reading all the reviews of "The Spirit" that has come out, it becomes clear that Frank Miller has lost his damn mind! Now all the blame can not go to Frank Miller but Michael Uslan has well. For someone who told Will Eisner that he would not permit anyone who "didn't get it" to work on the project. Its clear from the reviews that Miller does not get it. You think he would since he was friends with Will Eisner. There is Will Eisner's Spirit and then there is Frank Miller's " The Goddamn Spirit."
  • nope
    hahahaha. goddamn batman
  • /filmluvsdennys
it's a shame. cause the spirit deserves a good movie.
  • On Hot1019 (hot1019.com) we got the chance to talk to Gabriel Macht (Spirit) and boy oh boy could I tell the movie was going to suck based off his lack of excitement. He didnt seemed to excited to be a part of the press tour
  • gah
You guys have to read this brand new review over at AICN. It's hillarious.

Here's hoping that this is the end of Miller's "directing" career. I knew this was going to suck, purely based on Miller's rejection of the source material. What an ass.

Maybe a few years from now some sane person who doesn't suck will make a Spirit movie that is recognizable as Will Eisner's Spirit, but Miller has for now killed the character completely. This sounds like pure Robocop 3 era Miller.
  • Yeah, but to my understanding Robocop 3 was not Miller's fault, but more of a studio intervention clusterf***k. I believe Miller had written the script and sat aboard to help develop it, but it eventually got pushed/pulled/twisted from that Miller originally wrote. As a matter of fact he decided after that, that he wouldn't be involved with Hollywood. It wasn't till Robert Rodriguez did the opening scene for Sin City that Miller realized that there was some good out there. I still don't think Miller was ready to helm a film by himself, if ever.
  • I think the entire project was pretty ambitious for Miller's first solo foray into directing. It doesn't help that he twisted someone else's property into a dull looking rehash of Sin City.

From the footage I've seen, you can tell Miller was going for something very specific, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the kind of film that developed more of a "cult" following then anything.

Or maybe its just as awful as everyone is claiming, ha. I wouldn't mind another "Troll 2" to watch while drinking with friends.
  • this movie never looked good to me. I talked to someone who obviously doesnt know shit on christmas eve. this guy said he was very excited to see 'the spirit and the night watchmen.' He said these 2 movies could easily be the best movies of 2008. Combined with my hatred for this guys sister, and the fact that i didnt want to be there, it took every ounce of my willpower not to tear him to shreds. all I ended up saying was "it's 'the watchmen' and the spirit will suck terribly." then he got olivia munn's name wrong, calling her victoria and then gloria munn. idiot.
  • tom
    Keel heem!
  • At least Ebert's review of the movie was entertaining... I was never into this from the beginning so I feel kinda pampered :o)
  • the amazing null
actually "the night watchman" was that crappy "street kings" movie. they renamed it to avoid a problem over "the watchmen". that said, i am sure the guy is an idiot and his sister of easy virtue, but he may not be mistaken about comic movies. he may just like crappy movies but be awful with name changed.

oh, and i have long predicted that his movie would do the impossible by simultaneously being the worst movie ever made and the most forgettable movie ever made.
