Sherwood Schwartz and his son Lloyd Schwartz have signed a deal to bring Gilligan’s Island to the big screen. I loved Gilligan’s Island as a kid, and am not against the idea of a re-imagining of the series… But it seems to me that LOST is our generation’s version of the 1960’s television series, and anything closer to the source material would just be too silly (I’m imagining something like The Flintstones movie… ewww).

Schwartz broke the news at the Beverly Hills induction ceremony of Television Academy’s Hall of Fame on December 9th, where he told TV Guide that he wants Michael Cera to play Gilligan and Beyonce Knowles to play Ginger. It just seems like a bad idea. But if they could sucessfully update the series for the big screen, Cera might be perfect for the role of Gilligan. But I’m pretty sure if a movie makes it to theaters, it won’t be good.

Discuss: Who would you cast in the lead roles - Gilligan, The Skipper, Thurston Howell III, Mrs. Howell, The Professor, Ginger, and Mary Ann?

  • This will be terrible. I'm thinking of Bewitched.
  • or the horrible Flintstones movie. or the Brady Bunch movies, but they were hits in the 90s
  • I loved the Brady Bunch movies because they went in a wildly different direction then most of these remakes. It was so satirical and loaded with sexual innuendo, there was barely a genuine moment throughout them. Everybody was in on the joke.

I wish more of these terrible remakes where made in the same fashion, because there's just no way of making Gilligan's Island contemporary in any sort of entertaining way unless its self-mocking.
  • very true, but what's the point? Parody films rarely succeed at the Box Office
  • Because a non-parody version is going to do well at the box office?
  • Cal
Haha, yeah. Like if the plot was that they were filming a remake on an island and actually got shipwrecked.
  • worst idea ever. I LOVE that show as a kid (still do) and I dont see how it's gonna work as a film. Is it gonna be a parody of Gilligan's Island? If so, it won't work because most kids today never even heard of the show.
  • Hey! the Flintstones was the shit! I haven't seen it since i was 9, but it could still hold up...
  • That would be like flushing his career down a drain of never ending dimwitted yet lovable characters. You don't play Gilligan if you're an up and coming star. You just don't do that.
  • Docta Jones
Yeah, this is career suicide, if I've ever seen it.... Don't do it Michael....
  • mateo
    skipper- Philip Seymour Hoffman
    the professor- Johnny Depp
    mary-ann: Judi Dench

When in doubt, put some oscar winners in the comedy. It's bound to have a built-in audience.
  • just because a movie has an all-star cast, it doesn't mean that it'll be a hit or that it'll succeed at the Box Office.
  • J.D.
And I'm sure Judi Dench has been just WAITING to star in Giligan's Island...
  • Tommy
JUDI DENCH as MARY-ANN? That's priceless! I would pay TOP dollar to see that! But seriously - if they want to succeed they should go with a parody like The Brady Bunch... Make ELLEN DEGENERES as Gilligan! AND you'd have a laugh a minute movie!
  • Rico
Also - Add Julia Luise Dreyfus as Mary-Ann and you can't lose!
  • joshua striffolino
hoffman? no way im saying seth rogen as skipper and the proffesor could be someone that girls think are totally sexy like, who you said, or hugh jackman and mary ann could be katy perry...shes hot
  • They should at least let Land of the Lost come out and fail before they consider making a disaster like this. I don't see how this could be even close to something good.
  • I'm having faith in Land of the Lost, call me crazy.

That premise has the potential not to be awful, I think. Have no idea about execution.
  • Well, I might be semi-hipocritical. I will probably see it since I have seen all of Will's movies (even Semi-Pro *gun-to-head*). I just find it hard to believe that it will do well in the theaters. Time will tell. But, Gilligan's Island? Really? It just begs the question "Why?"
  • Huh?

    Wha?

There would have to be some sort of... something. Loved the way they did the Brady Bunch movies, but they couldn't get away with the same thing for Gilligan, could they?

Amy Adams would make a perfect Mary Ann, though, not that I would want her to take a role in what would likely be an unfortunate film.
  • Oh. My. God.

Is Hollywood THAT bankrupt of ideas that it has to consider a freaking Gilligan's Island movie?

    Vic
  • i think they should inject more modern themes, like sex and drugs.
  • Cera has the look, but I dont think he has the acting ability to play that goofy of a roll. And no I dont want to see an updated version.
  • How about they adapt Gilligan's Wake?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilligan%27s_Wake

Bob Hoskins for the Skipper! Colbert for the Professor!
  • hartman27
Remember when Sandler was thinking of making a Gilligan movie? or was that Rob Schinder? Does it even matter?

So help me Cera if you do this instead of the Arrested Development movie you get a banned for life in my book (except for A.D. because I love it so)
  • step 1: Kill Gilligan
    step 2: Get Rescued

It was that simple, yet no one ever carried out the plan.
  • Todd
I think Ray Winstone has to play the Skipper, either that or Jack Black
  • Brian
If they cast him as Gilligan, I will never watch a film again. What the hell is going on with them remaking perfect classics with stupid untalented and unfunny fools these days and ruining those percious classics? Makes me sick....not a good thing to wake up to on Christmas Eve that's for sure.
  • Jeff
SO Micheal Cera is here to do re-makes? F*ck no.

    NO TO THIS!
  • Todd
Not that I'd care, cause I wouldnt go see it anyway, but if Cera is in this, than it would probably star other Apatow alumni, so it might be something like this. John C Reilly as Mr Howell, Paul Rudd as the Professor, Jonah Hill or Jack Black as Skipper, Katherine Keener as Mrs Howell, Jena Malone as Maryann and Seth Rogan as a transvestite Ginger.
  • todd
Then again, I might pay to see Seth Rogen as a transvestite Ginger
  • Mr. Howell: Michael Caine
    The Professor: Hank Azaria
    Gilligan: Jeff Goldblum
Skipper: Samuel L. Jackson (Think about that for a Second)

    That's all I got.
  • And you know my name is Skipper, when I strike down upon thee with my Oar of vengence...mother f*cker. Let's get the hell off this bitch!
  • brandon
the only writer i see that could make this movie is.....apatow.
  • jones
or perhaps put cera in a movie with an original idea.
goddamn remakes of remakes, of tv shows of video games.
    pathetic.
  • GOOFRIP
    BOO!
  • I wouldn't mind seeing the guy play Gilligan.
  • Yeah, but I doubt he'd even want to do it. Hasn't he recently said how he's not 100% about wanting to play George Michael in the Arrested Development movie? He'd have to be completely off if he'd turn down Arrested Development in search for Gilligan's Island.

I still think that no matter what this movie would be a horrible idea. Certain properties just work in their original incarnation and don't need to be revisited. I don't think anyone is looking for another take on the Munsters or My 3 Sons. However, I would love to see Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino in a revenge movie called "Welcome Back Cotter: School's Out For Good".
  • Yeah I agree, I don't see this one being any good at the Box Office. I might see sometime eventually but I would most definitely not go to a theater to watch a remake of Gilligan's Island.
  • Tots
not entirely sure how LOST is our Gilligan's Island...

Survivor maybe, but I don't remember much of a supernatural sci-fi element in Gilligan's island unless I'm mistaken.
  • Gilligan Island and LOST cannot be compared to each other, besides both shows taking places on an island. Gilligan's Island is a slapstick goofy comedy, for god's sake.
  • its our version of it, not the same thing. survivor is a worse example, there was no competition on gilligans island. lost is closer in that the situation is similar, but obviously there is a much darker theme. its not that hard to make the connection.
  • JJ Abrams Son
The comparison works in the sense that the 1960s were about silly fantastical comedy and the 2000's are darker - everyone has a secret.
  • The Skipper never loses weight, much like Hurley.
  • spacedog605
How else would you explain the Harlem Globe Trotters showing up on the island?
  • Gilligan
Lost is totally our generation's Gilligan's island.
  • He does look like Gilligan, I will give him that. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Skipper? That's the only casting job I can think of and that is only because I am convinced that the man can play any role and has the look if you give him a bit of makeup.
  • Yea, poor analogy with the Lost reference.. I think a Gilligan's Island could work as a movie, not as a new tv series.. The right cast would be a must. I'm not liking this Beyonce as Ginger concept. Seems a little too forced, in my opinion.
  • Beyonce as Ginger? hell no!
  • I've been thinking more about the Gilligans Island/Lost comparison and I think it really works . (spoilers) In one of the Gilligans sland movies, Giligan and the gang get rescued and go back to their normal lives, but that isn't where they fit in. So they decide to "go back" in the same way that Jack and the gang decide to go back.
