First Look: James Cameron Directing Avatar

The Los Angeles Times has a first look behind the scenes photo of James Cameron directing Sam Worthington in his big budget sci-fi 3D film Avatar. Look at the incredible performance capture and 3D rig, both of which were probably created for this film, just off camera. And if you look where Cameron is pointing, you will see one of the alien creatures from the movie projected onto the set using a new state of the art holographic projector thinggy. Too bad all of this is happening off camera. You can read the attached one paragraph article (I’ll sum it up: the movie is going to be cool) at LATimes.com.

  • Still vaguely skeptical about this.

all this hope and we really havent seen ne of the finished product
  • The Battle Angel tee makes me hope that we see that film before Forbidden Planet

I like a lot of people started off really excited about this project but recently I've grown cold on it. I'm sick of all the news about this movie only being about how amazing it will be. I don't know. I hope for the best.
  • Not exciting... I'd much rather see the camera Peter is talking about.
  • Horray for News about Nothing!!!
  • I got a lot of respect for James Cameron. He always creates strong, independent female roles in movies, unlike most male jerkass filmmakers.
  • J.D.
Unfortunately, anyone who has worked with Cameron knows he's a male jerkass filmmaker.
  • when is the trailer coming out ?
  • J.D.
    2014
  • :/
  • this is the cinematic equivalent of getting a blow job that stops halfway through and you and your mate just kinda sit there..

I am confused. I always thought this would be a 3D(-cinema) movie which is completely animated in 3D? So: Why the sets?
  • He's wearing a headset and pointing off-camera. Exhilarating.

Reminds me of a scene in the IronMan making of doc where Favereu is at the sound desk with a exec producer and he points to the screen. The exec says he hates these kid of staged pictures.
Kinda funny seeing it after that.
  • Id much rather him shoot the whole movie live action. I mean, Im still not exactly sure how he is making this movie. is it some live action, some mo-cap? I dont know. after Beowulf (who remembers that movie?), I realized not only was Zemeckis going to the wrong path (or continuing to go down the wrong path), but movies are going down the wrong path, as well.

I know Cameron has been working on this for years and years, so I know he's going to have something wicked awesome in store for us. I just have no idea what that could even be?

dude has made some of thee best action films to date. The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and I still need to give Total Recall and The Abyss another shot.
  • Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoven, not James Cameron.
  • Apu
    Total Recall? :)
  • So what's this movie going to be about?
  • J.D.
    Aliens.

    And Sigourney Weaver.
  • thanks.
  • I have faith in Cameron, Aliens is still my all time favorite movie.

am I the only one looking that Alita t-shirt ? don't tell me he's trying to rape that story... please.

This movie is going to be such a huge dissapointment. You can read the leaked script online and the story is not all that interesting and relies too much on the visuals. Now, Cameron is a 3D junkie and thinks that everybody can see 3D the way he does, which couldn't be more wrong. Just look at his previous movie Ghost of the Abyss. What a mess that was. My whole family couldn't stand watching that 3D thing for too long. He got the visuals wrong. He thinks this is going to look in a theater like it does on Imax or like it does at his own studio screening. You'll see what I mean. Unless you have never seen a 3D movie before, you are not going to be impressed with this thing.
